Siena is an urban, Roman
Catholic Parish formed in 2006 from two
historic Charlestown parishes. We are an
intentionally inclusive community
welcoming all of the many people who
make up our diverse neighborhood. Because
our lives are nourished by the Eucharist, we
strive to build a vibrant Parish that develops
and strengthens our faith and worship. With
a goal of being community-oriented in the
Spirit of the Gospel, we are involved in the
local and global issues of our times. We are
therefore dedicated to service, action, and

SPRING RAINS
Congratulations to the First Holy Communion ClassCongratulations to the First Holy Communion ClassCongratulations to the First Holy Communion ClassCongratulations to the First Holy Communion Class
Do you ever find yourself amazed at the complexities and beauty of nature – like these ongoing yielding rich rains soaking the earth yielding rich greens everywhere? Sometimes I think there is a conspiracy afoot that obscures from our view the mag-nificence of everything around and within us – because of our worries, work, respon-sibilities and the constant juggling of time. What does it take for you to pause and take it all in for a moment? For me it has been daily walks and time out of doors with my dog – somehow that beautiful creature causes me to slow down and, just as she is snuffling and poking around – I find myself doing the same in my own way.
And the wonder of this beautiful springtime also calls to mind a delightful reflection by Jorge Luis Borges – which I have quoted in the past.
INSTANTES
If I could live my life again. Next time, I would try to make more mistakes.
I would not try to be so perfect, I would relax more. I would be sillier than I have been. I would take fewer things seriously.
I would be less fastidious. Accept more risks, I would take more trips,
Contemplate more evenings, Climb more mountains, and swim more rivers... I would go to more places where I have not been,
Eat more ice cream and fewer beans. I would have more real problems and less imaginary ones.
I was one of those people who lived sensibly and meticulously every minute of their life.
Of course I have had moments of happiness. But if I could go back in time, I would try to
have good moments only, and not waste precious time.
I was someone never went anywhere without a thermometer, a
hot water bag, an umbrella and a parachute. If I could live again,
I would travel more frivolously. If I could live again, I would begin
to walk barefoot at the beginning of the spring and I would continue to do so until the end of autumn.
I would ride more merry-go-rounds, I would contemplate more evenings and I would play
with more children. If I could have another life ahead.
But I am 85 years old you see, and I know that I am dying

Our Stewardship Prayer by the Welcoming Commiee
Heavenly Father, instill in our hearts a spirit of love and com-
passion. May we foster a welcoming parish community with
acceptance and respect for all. Inspire us to make a difference by
being generous with our time and talents. Please send your Ho-
ly Spirit among us to remind us to follow Jesus and his teach-
ings in all aspects of our lives. As we end this Mass, may we go
forth and spread goodwill among our neighbors, friends, and
fellow parishioners. Through Christ, our Lord. Amen
May the loveliness of these spring days increase your wonder of God’s majesty so that you cherish every instant – as gift!

Daniel Leaving
There is a general sadness among parishioners
hearing the news that Daniel Sauceda will be leav-
ing after seven years as Director of Music/Organist.
Daniel’s wonderful contributions to the music and
liturgy of our community have been deeply
appreciated. In gratitude for his generous
sharing of his gifts, the parish finance and
pastoral councils have recommended we make a
financial gift to Daniel.
Daniel will be moving to Arizona, closer to home
and family.
Our parish gift will help him in his move and to
get se7led in his new community.
Anyone who would like to contribute may do so
in one of the following ways:

COUNCILCOUNCILCOUNCILCOUNCIL
As is our custom, on Pentecost Sunday, June 9, 2019 at
the 10:30 a.m. Family Mass, we will select names of persons
who have been nominated and have accepted nomination to
be members of our Parish Pastoral Council. With the
guidance of the Holy Spirit, six (6) names will be selected by
lot. The nomination process begins this weekend, May 18/19
Only registered parishioners may nominate or be
nominated.
Nominees must also participate in the sacramental life of
the Church and be 18 years of age or older. PPC members
serve a full term of three (3) years and a7end monthly
meetings from September to June.
As a consultative body, the Parish Pastoral Council is
responsible to the pastor, assisting and supporting him in
his leadership role. It recognizes the varied gifts of the
parish members and invites them to an active leadership
role in the parish.
The Council is an important means by which the pastor
will hear the voice of the parish. In deliberations and
consultation with the pastor, the council helps to unite the
pastor and parishioners. Together they discern the pastoral
needs of the parish and ways in which those needs can be
addressed.
Once the nominations are in, the nominees will be
contacted to see if they accept the nomination. If they do,
their names will go into a “pot” for selection on Pentecost
Sunday. Regardless of how many times people are
nominated, their names are placed into the pot only once.
Please prayerfully consider possible candidates for the
Council and submit their names no later than Sunday June
2, to give us adequate time to contact the nominees prior to
selection on Pentecost Sunday.
You may nominate by filling out the 2019 Parish Council
Nomination Form below and placing it in the Ballot Box at
the entrance of the Church, mailing it to us or dropping it off
at the Parish Center.
We thank departing members of the Council for their
insight on serious issues and dedication to Parish initiatives.
Our community is not complete without the guidance and
support of such wonderful people.

A WORD FORM OUR PARISH PASTORAL COUNCIL
At our May meeting, the Parish Pastoral Council met and discussed a variety of issues related to Par-ish life. One of the important concerns discussed was the anticipated deficit in this year’s budget. To date, the weekly & monthly offertory and grand annual collections are $47,000 below last year. These collections are the basic revenue needed for the overall functioning of the Parish. For the first time in several years we are facing a deficit. There are many reasons why this is happen-ing. One might be confusion over the Inspiring Hope Campaign. That Campaign to paint our beautiful church and restore artwork was very successful in gifts and pledges. Those funds are exclusively for the project and are not connected to the day-to-day operating expenses of the Parish. In June, it will once again be time to make your 2019/2020 offertory commitment. The Parish Pas-toral Council is asking all parishioners to prayerfully consider increasing their Offertory Commitment so that our Parish will not experience another financial shortfall in the coming year. We also encourage the use of online banking to simplify donations and continuously support our Parish. We are grateful to all of our fellow parishioners for their generous financial commitment to St. Mary—St. Catherine of Siena Parish. Those of you who are new to the Parish, we hope you will join our ef-forts to effectively raise enough to meet the operating expenses of our Parish. Surely, together, with each of us doing our best, the Parish will continue to prosper.
Cara Bradley, Shawn Burke (Vice-Chair), Deidre Carty, James Coviello, Rob Cronin, Len Dorrian, Michelle Duane, Renee Kessler, Ana Lotharius, Dianne Ludy, Cynthia Markey, Mary McCarthy, Deborah O’Shea, David Reed, Katie Signorelli, Brendan Sullivan, Rev. James Ronan and Sr. Nancy Citro.
Please pray for those serving in our Armed Forces and their families:
Gerald Byrnes Jr. (Marines) Ralph Rizzo, Jr. (Marines)
Joseph Upton, Jr. (Marines) Kenneth (Army)
Jackie Walsh (Army) If you have a loved one serving in the military, please contact the Parish at 617-242-4664.
