St. Mary Parish not only has the distinction of
being one of the oldest parishes in the
Archdiocese of Cincinnati, but one of the oldest
in the state of Ohio.
St. Mary’s congregation dates back to 1843,
with the original church being dedicated March
8, 1846. At that time most churches were
frame, but St. Mary was brick and thoroughly
equipped. Extensive remodeling was planned
for the church in 1898. However, after work
progressed, it was decided that the church would
be enlarged to include a cellar. This work was
completed in June, 1899. An extensive remodel-
ing project to update the church was completed
in 1979. The latest remodeling and painting
project was completed in 2007.
Today, we enjoy a beautiful
edifice dedicated to Our Lord
and cherished by the members
of Piqua’s Catholic parishes.

St. Mary Altar Society:
St. Mary Altar Society had their Christmas Luncheon at the Eagles in Covington this
year. Following the luncheon and a meeting, they delivered Christmas cards and flowers
to parishioners who are at the following nursing homes: Covington Care Center,
Brookdale, Garbry Ridge, Piqua Manor, and Heartland Nursing Home. The next business
meeting will be on February 12.
Adult Faith Formation:
Coffee and Doughnuts: Held on the first Sunday of the month after the St. Mary 9:00am
Mass and the St. Boniface 11:00 am Mass. This is a time to enjoy refreshment and fellowship
with fellow parishioners. Sponsored by the Family Life Commissions of both parishes, the
Adult Faith Formation coordinates the different groups hosting. If your group would like to
host, please contact Barb Kohl.
Fall Faith offering: The DVD program Untold Blessing, Three Paths to Holiness by Bishop
Robert Barron was offered in two sessions for seven weeks lead by Tim Pawlaczyk.
Christ Renews His Parish: The fourth women’s retreat was held on November 4-
5th at the Downing Street Campus with fifteen women attending. The men’s retreat
will be held January 20-21, 2018. This is a program of personal renewal for
parishioners led by parishioners.
Mass of Remembrance: A Mass honoring deceased members of both parishes was held at St. Boniface on
November 12 at 2:00 pm. As names were read, families came forward and lit a candle. A reception
followed in the Caserta Center.
Dynamic Catholic Resources: Boxes containing free materials are available in both churches and the chapel
for parishioners. Feel free to keep, return, or pass on to others.
Prayer Partners: Parishioners are again partnering to pray for our twenty-four eighth grade Confirmation
candidates and twenty-six RCIA candidates and catechumens during their formation period.
Perfectly Yourself: A book by Matthew Kelly was distributed one
per household at all the Christmas Masses. The book can be used
for personal reflection or in a group discussion.
Prayer Workshop: A three session workshop on prayer will be
offered in two sessions (Monday afternoons and Wednesday eve-
nings) at the Downing Street Campus beginning January 22.
Lent: The Commission is now in the planning stages for the upcoming Lenten
season. Stations of the Cross will be offered on Thursday evenings at St. Mary and
Sunday afternoon at St. Boniface. Times will be listed in the bulletin during Lent.
Msgr. Frank Lane will be presenting a half day retreat on Saturday, March 10th at the
North Street Campus.
The Adult Faith Formation Commission is comprised of members from both St. Boniface and
St. Mary parishes, along with Fr. Bolte, and Diane Mengos. (Continued on next page)

St. Boniface members are Joe Dicola, Jim Niswonger, Tim Pawlaczyk, Nancy Peltier, and Chuck
Tyler. St. Mary members are Ann Koehl, Barb Kohl (chairperson), Cathy Oda, Sr. Joan Clare
Stewart, Gloria Stonerock, Bill Wattercutter, Noreen Wendeln. Meetings are held at the North
Street Campus on the third Tuesday of the month at 7:00 pm. Anyone interested in being a part of
this commission is welcome to attend or contact any of the current members. Questions concerning
any of our activities, please contact Barb Kohl (773-9205 or [email protected]).
St. Boniface/St. Mary Mission Committee:
The Mission Committee was hoping to have a group from Dominica to
come for a visit with us in October, 2017. Then, disaster struck!
Hurricane Maria tore the island apart, and they couldn’t come. The
people are without electricity, some do not have roofs, and much more
damage. We were going to send money to help with their transportation
to come here, but since they couldn’t come, we gave money for two (2)
generators and some miscellaneous items. There was also a second
collection taken to help them. We hope in June to send more money to
help them get back to normalcy. At this time, we don’t have any idea
when they can come here or we can go there. Please keep the people of
Dominica in your prayers. Also in June, we will be sending money to
the Gutmanns in Chile and Sister Sarah in Guatemala.
Many donations were received from the Giving Trees. The Mission
Commission thanks everyone for their support of our mission and twinning activities. We will next meet at
5pm on January 15 in the St. Mary meeting room. All are welcome to come. May God Bless Everyone!!!!
Cursillo Movement:
DeColores! During the fall season, we were living our Fourth Day quite actively through the Men’s #226
weekend in September, Region IV Encounter and the celebrated Praise & Worship Night, both in Octo-
ber. There are many people to thank for all of this coming together so I cannot mention all by name here. I
humbly ask the Fourth Day Community to offer a prayer of thanksgiving for those who helped to serve so
graciously. Also, be sure to mark your calendar now that we are booked with Our Lady of the Holy Spirit
Center for a Women’s weekend #183 on March 15-18, 2018, and the next Men’s #227 on September 6-9,
2018. Do not wait to send in your applications! I understand there is interest by several candidates already so
let’s first begin prayer and palanca for them and send the applications in now.
The School of Leaders has begun its new format and is off to a great start for the
2017-2018 year. Remember the School is for any and all Cursillistas who desire to
accelerate and perfect the conversion process. We take a deeper look at how to
live the Christian Ideal. The School helps all in attendance develop a better
understanding of the Cursillo Movement and helps each person live a more
balanced life of piety, study, and action. The School gathers monthly on
the second Saturday of each month from 9:30 AM to 11:00 AM and is hosted by a
different Ultreya or parish each month throughout the Archdiocese. Upcoming
session is January 13, 2018, at St. Francis de Sales, Lebanon “Save the Date”. We can carpool - give me a
call! Please see the website for additional dates/locations at (www.cincinnati-cursillo.org) and for any can-
cellations due to weather. We look forward to renewing old friendships and growing new ones.
Peace, Julie Tyler, 773-2700

On Sunday, December 3,
St. Nick made an appearance after the
9:00am and 11:00am Masses. He’s

at St. Boniface.
Reflections . . .
From his best seller, All I Really Need To Know I Learned in Kindergarten, author
Robert Fulghum offers these thoughts:
Share everything
Play fair
Don’t hit people
Put things back where you found them
Don’t take things that aren’t yours
Say you’re sorry when you hurt somebody
Clean up your own mess
Warm cookies and cold milk are good for you
Be aware of wonder
Live a balanced life—learn some & think some—draw & paint some—sing & dance, play & work everyday some.
A Sweet Job:
Kathy Guillozet & Theresa
Henderson set-up the “cupcake”
birthday cake for Fr. Ang’s 99th
Birthday Celebration held on
December 9. In addition to cake,
attendees were served pasta made
with Fr. Ang’s own meatball/sauce
recipes. Many thanks to this com-
mittee, headed by St. Boniface
Parish Staff members, who worked
so hard to make the evening
very special.

So the shepherds went to Bethlehem and found Mary and Joseph. The baby Jesus was lying in a manger as they had been told. When they saw him, they told everyone what the angel had said
and everyone who heard the story were astonished. Then the shepherds returned to their
sheep, praising God for sending his Son to be their Savior.

Before an audience that “filled the gym/cafeteria at
the Downing Street Campus to capacity,” the PCS
students presented an outstanding Christmas
program.
“Our All School Christmas Program,” said Brad
Zimmerman, PCS Principal, “was a wonderful
success!” He added, “These programs are perfect
opportunities for the students to showcase their
talents outside the classroom. Awesome job,
students. Thanks for sharing your gifts with us.”
Performing were the students — pre-schoolers to the
