Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC)— Coronavirus Appeal
At St Mary’s we have often supported DEC appeals by holding retiring collections
after services. In these strange and difficult times we are unable to do this but the
need for funds remains. The DEC is currently running a Coronavirus Appeal to
provide help to the millions of people who are in refugee camps in war-torn
countries like Yemen, Syria and South Sudan where Covid-19 presents an additional
threat to life. The DEC brings together 14 leading UK aid charities to raise funds
which enable member charities to scale up their operations in areas of greatest
need quickly and effectively. If you are able, please consider making a donation to
the DEC Coronavirus appeal. Donations may be made online through the DEC
website at https://www.dec.org.uk/appeals where you can also find out more about
the work of the DEC.
From the Pastoral Team Lead:
After a cautious start with safety in mind two weeks ago, we have the chance to
gather again for worship on Sunday mornings. Not everyone is comfortable yet
with going back to our ways of before the lockdown in March, but there is time and
opportunity now for us all to choose whether to worship in company now, or soon,
or later. In the meantime we continue to film our services which can be watched at
home, either live, or at a convenient time. Even as we can't now meet with Jesus in
his earthly incarnation, we can still meet him through his words and works
recorded for us in scripture. How blessed we are!
No life is full of blessings unmixed, and we continue to pray for those affected by
the Corona virus, and for those who have lost those they love including Joy
Greenwood and Richard Hunt who have died recently.
If you would like us to pray with you (even if over the phone), or offer prayer for
someone you know, in our daily Morning Prayer, please do get in touch via our
email, [email protected]<mailto:[email protected]>.
May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God,
and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with us all, evermore. Amen.
Alison

Thank you from The Mission to Seafarers
Following the Revd Jeremy Hellier’s talk during last October’s Autumn Lectures, a
group of ladies got together to knit woolly hats, gloves and scarves for seafarers
visiting Royal Portbury and Avonmouth docks, many of whom, coming from warmer
climes, suffer from the cold when arriving in UK Ports. A week ago Margaret and
Derrick Walker were able to deliver 84 items to the Avonmouth and Portbury
Mission. The Port Chaplain, the Revd Jeremy Hellier, expressed his appreciation in
an email to Graham saying, “I was delighted to receive a visit last week from Derek
Walker and his wife with a good number of knitted items made by members of your
church. Wonderful to receive such ongoing support from you congregation.”
Thanks are due to Margaret for organising this response to a very interesting talk
about the work of The Mission to Seafarers and, if anyone has any more knitted
items, please leave them at the back of church for Margaret to collect and deliver at
a convenient time.
