Apostolic Exhortation (continued) SIGNS OF HOLINESS IN TODAY’S WORLD

110. Within the framework of holiness offered by the Beatitudes and Matthew 25:31-46, I would like to mention a few signs or spiritual attitudes that, in my opinion, are necessary if we are to understand the way of life to which the Lord calls us. I will not pause to explain the means of sanctification already known to us: the various methods of prayer, the inestimable sacraments of the Eucharist and Reconciliation, the offering of personal sacrifices, different forms of devotion, spiritual direction, and many others as well. Here I will speak only of certain aspects of the call to holiness that I hope will prove especially meaningful. 111. The signs I wish to highlight are not the sum total of a model of holiness, but they are five great expressions of love for God and neighbor that I consider of particular importance in the light of certain dangers and limitations present in today’s culture. There we see a sense of anxiety, sometimes violent, that distracts and debilitates; negativity and sullenness; the self-content bred by consumerism; individualism; and all those forms of ersatz spirituality – having nothing to do with God – that dominate the current religious marketplace. PERSEVERANCE, PATIENCE AND MEEKNESS 112. The first of these great signs is solid grounding in the God who loves and sustains us. This source of inner strength enables us to persevere amid life’s ups and downs, but also to endure hostility, betrayal and failings on the part of others. “If God is for us, who is against s?” (Rom 8:31): this is the source of the peace found in the saints. Such inner strength makes it possible for us, in our fast-paced, noisy and aggressive world, to give a witness of holiness through patience and constancy in doing good. It is a sign of the fidelity born of love, for those who put their faith in God (pístis) can also be faithful to others (pistós). They do not desert others in bad times; they accompany them in their anxiety and distress, even though doing so may not bring immediate satisfaction. 113. Saint Paul bade the Romans not to repay evil for evil (cf. Rom 12:17), not to seek revenge (v. 19), and not to be overcome by evil, but instead to “overcome evil with good” (v. 21). This attitude is not a sign of weakness but of true strength, because God himself “is slow to anger but great in power” (Nah 1:3). The word of God exhorts us to “put away all bitterness and wrath and wrangling and slander, together with all malice” (Eph 4:31). 114. We need to recognize and combat our aggressive and selfish inclinations, and not let them take root. “Be angry but do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger” (Eph 4:26). When we feel overwhelmed, we can always cling to the anchor of prayer, which puts us back in God’s hands and the source of our peace. “Have no anxiety about anything, but in everything, by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts...” (Phil 4:6-7). 115. Christians too can be caught up in networks of verbal violence through the internet and the various forums of digital communication. Even in Catholic media, limits can be overstepped, defamation and slander can become commonplace, and all ethical standards and respect for the good name of others can be abandoned. The result is a dangerous dichotomy, since things can be said there that would be unacceptable in public discourse, and people look to compensate for their own discontent by lashing out at others. It is striking that at times, in claiming to uphold the other commandments, they completely ignore the eighth, which forbids bearing false witness or lying, and ruthlessly vilify others. Here we see how the unguarded tongue, set on fire by hell, sets all things ablaze (cf. Jas 3:6). Fr. James Narithookil, CMI—Parochial Administrator

Bishop Gallegos Maternity Home 12th Annual Fundraiser Dinner

Sunday, Sept. 9, 2018 Join us at the Dante Club for an evening honoring the life of Monsignor Edward Kavanagh. The event begins at 5:00pm with a social hour and silent auction with dinner service at 6:00 pm. BGMH has been a safe haven for the most vulnerable in the Sacramento area since 1992. We provide temporary shelter, food, case management services, life skills education and counseling to homeless pregnant women and their infants. Our goal is to empower the women who come to our home to become self-sufficient and independent upon their return to the community with their babies or to support them with the facilitation of adoption if they so choose. We hope that you join us for dinner to support a charity that seeks to create positive changes for individual women and future generations. Tickets are $75 per person (tables of ten can be reserved). Call or text Kathy Baxter for reservations. 916-337-6824

LECTORS WANTED Our Parish is in need of Lectors for weekend and daily liturgies. Lectors proclaim the word of God and is a wonderful ministry. Lector training is provided that includes a review of the revised Lector Directives, handouts and a "hands-on" reading at the Ambo. Once training is completed, the Lector is commissioned by Fr. James and placed in the reading schedule. Lectoring enriches one's faith and provides a better understanding of the word of God. All Mass readings are available: Daily Mass Monday—Saturday, 8am, Saturday, 5pm, Sunday, 8am, 9:30am, 11am and 6pm. If you have a gift of good speaking and a willingness to share that gift please contact the Lector Chair, Dale Walton, at (916) 920-2728.

BOWLERS WANTED Ladies, if you enjoy bowling, talking with friends, laughing and having a good time “with the girls”, then the St. Mary’s Ladies Bowling League has an opening for YOU! We bowl at Country Club Lanes (beginning September 6, with holidays excluded) on Thursday afternoons at 12:30pm (takes about 2 hours) in teams of three. It’s only $7 per week...and it’s more fun than cleaning the kitchen!! Call Carol Perri (Secretary) at 916-455-7042 or talk to her personally before/after the 9:30am Mass on Sundays.

VOCATION CROSS Fr. James has asked that a family take our vocation cross home each week to pray for vocations to the priesthood & religious life. Our sign ups have been a little thin lately. Luckily, families have stepped up on the spot. If you can help with this ministry by taking the cross home & praying with your family each day for a week, it would be much appreciated. Please go to the link below & sign up. What a wonderful message you are giving to your children by becoming active in this prayer ministry. https://signup.com/client/invitation2/secure/1971528/false#/invitation

OUR MISSION STATEMENT St. Mary Parish prepares and sustains its members and

guests for a life and eternity in the presence of God. In accomplishing our mission, we proclaim and

celebrate our salvation through Jesus Christ enlivened by the Holy Spirit, nourish our sacramental life

especially in the Sunday celebration of the Eucharist and demonstrate our faith worshiping, educating,

serving and encouraging vocations as modeled by Mother Mary.

We are gearing up for a new year of Catholic Faith Formation (CFF) for the 2018-2019 school year. Registration is open now. Registration packets are available at the parish office. These classes for grades K-8 build upon the basics of our faith and apply to everyday situations through the use of Gospel Weeklies. By discussing the upcoming Gospel on Wednesday, the children are more in tune when they hear it again on Sunday and understand how the words written centuries ago still apply to life today. Our classes are held on Wednesday evenings from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the school. As a reminder, children receiving Sacraments of Reconciliation, Eucharist and Confirmation must attend 2 consecutive years of instruction per Diocesan guidelines. Any questions, please contact Cindy Blecha at [email protected]

The Lay Mission Project and the Diocese of Sacramento are working together to offer a second cohort for the project. MicroGiving works! We’ve received $4,000 in donations, in our first few months!

Microgiving is working for us in a big way. With less than 10% of the Parish participating we received dona-tions totaling $4,000. This is an effortless way to help our parish- Roundups! Here’s how round ups work - buy a cup of coffee for $2.49, the ‘round up’ to the next dollar ($3.00) is .51 cents. That $.51 is donated to the parish through a company called WeMicroGive. WeMicroGive has put together a web site specifically for our parish. Just designate a credit or debit card for “roundup” transactions, and We Micro Give handles the rest using a secure encrypted system recognized by 9,000 financial institutions. Roundups are calculated daily, added up, then a single donation is delivered to St Mary’s at the end of the month. You have full control and can track your donations on a donor dashboard, set limits or give a fixed amount or stop at any time. Please sign up or to learn more go https://wemicrogive.com/catholic-sacramento/st-mary-parish-sacramento/ or contact support@ wemicrogive.com. (www.wemicrogive.com)

Special Collection for Northern California Relief and Recovery Efforts This Weekend

“Our hearts ache over the terrible loss and suffering experienced by those of you who have lost homes. We pray that you do not lose hope. Trust in God’s abiding presence and mercy.” – Bishop Jaime Soto, Diocese of Sacramento. We turn now in solidarity to the needs of our brother and sisters in Redding and Shasta/Trinity counties as they struggle to heal and rebuild their lives and their community in the wake of the recent wild fires. These funds will be used to assist the rebuilding efforts already under way in Redding, Shasta, Trinity, Sutter and Lassen counties to assist families affected by the fire.

Welcome back to school! Students joined us bright and early on Monday, August 13th to begin the 63rd school year for St. Mary School. Welcome back everyone!
