Ephesians 1:3-14
Mark 6:7-13

Luxury Accommodations Required
Think back to your last vacation. If you’re like most, your
suitcases bulged with clothes, cosmetics, money, and medicine.
You made lists to ensure comfort and security on the road. Not
sure you need it? Pack it anyway. And heaven forbid we arrive
without reservations at the best accommodations our budget
allows. It’s the blessing and curse of our prosperous society: we
carry our comfortable lifestyles along with us, remaining
untouched by the inconveniences of any culture we visit.
The apostles were not so fortunate. When Jesus sent out the
twelve, they carried only a walking stick, without even money
for food. You see, Jesus knew the apostles couldn’t do their job
if they didn’t interact with the communities they visited. As
evangelists, the apostles needed to get their hands dirty literally
and metaphorically, experiencing for themselves the need of the
people they met. Only by seeing the broken, the hungry, the
outcast, could the disciples know where God’s touch was
needed. Ask yourself as you travel through your world this
week, can I see the needy around me or am I too busy arranging
my luxury accommodations?

New Series of the Diocesan School of Biblical
Study to Begin This Fall
The Diocesan School of Biblical Studies (DSBS) is
accepting registrations for the new four-year class that will
begin in September 2015. The program, revised by the
University of Dallas, joins the best of contemporary
Catholic biblical learning with a thirst for personal
spiritual enrichment and a love for the Church’s use of the
scriptures. Msgr. Mark Pierce, Dr. Michael Lopez-Kaley,
and Mr. Adam Koester are the teachers for the three
teaching sites.
The typical class day is made up of three hours of lectures
offered by seasoned faculty interspersed with three hours
of small-group discussions based on prepared study
questions. Parish catechists, parochial school teachers,
permanent deacons, graduates of the Diocesan Lay
Formation Program, and regular bible readers looking for
something “beyond the basics” will profit from the
program.
Tuition of $250 for the first year’s course, “Old Testament
Foundation—Genesis through Kings,” covers teaching
stipends, facility costs, and the noon meal. A description
of the full course of study, registration forms, and
calendars for the 2015-2016 session can be had by calling
Msgr. Mark Pierce, the DSBS director, at (715) 723-7108,
emailing [email protected], or writing in care of
“Diocesan School of Biblical Studies / 117 Allen Street /
Chippewa Falls, WI 54729-2899.”
The Baseball Priest Fr. Burke Masters
More gripping than the pull of
professional sports, the call to the
priesthood reveals the great plans
God has for those he has called.
In this homily, Fr. Burke Masters tells the story of his
journey through baseball, to Catholicism and eventually to
the priesthood. In a bonus segment, Major League
Baseball all-star Mike Sweeney discusses being the
perfect teammate with examples from his time in the pros.
