101 Questions about the Catholic Mass (continued)

Prayer of the Faithful 55) What is the prayer of the Faithful? In the prayer of the Faithful, the assembly stands to pray, in a common priesthood shared by all the baptized, for the concerns of the Church and the salvation of the whole world. Intercessory prayer is a very powerful and beneficial way to intercede for all humanity. As we lift up to God those in need, including ourselves, He hears and responds for the good of those for whom we pray. He is our Heavenly Father Who takes care of His children. Jesus says: “Ask and you shall receive,” and “Where two or more are gathered in My Name and in prayer, I am there with you.” Together, as the local Church, we gather in prayer united with the universal Church in Christ. We pray for the needs of the Church, the world, civil authorities, those in need, and the local community, including those who are sick and have recently passed away, and for the salvation of the world.

Liturgy of the Eucharist 56) What is the Liturgy of the Eucharist? The Liturgy of the Eucharist is the second and the most significant part of the Mass. Christ Himself instituted it at the Last Supper so He could be continuously present in His Church un-til the end of time. The Liturgy of the Eucharist includes the preparation of gifts, where the bread and wine with water are brought to the altar; the Eucharistic prayer giving thanks to God for the whole work of salvation and the consecration whereby the bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Christ; and the breaking of the one bread in preparation for the faithful re-ceiving the Lord’s Body and Blood, just as the apostles received It at the last Supper from Je-sus ‘own Hands.

Preparation of Gifts 57) What is brought up to the priest after the Homily? A few lay parsons, often a family, represent the entire congregation in bringing up the gifts at Mass. The gifts include the cruets of wine and water, the cup of the communion breads, called the ciborium, and the money collected by the congregation as a tithe offering to God and for the church’s needs and ministries. These items are placed on or near the altar. 58) What are the two cloth pieces placed on the altar for? The altar servers prepare the altar by placing the corporal and the purificator on the altar. The corporal is a square piece of linen used as an undercover for the sacred vessels used in the con-secration so as to collect any particles or drops of the consecrated Host or wine that may fall onto the altar. The purificator is used to dry the sacred vessels at the end of Communion when they are purified. These cloth pieces are washed in a special way in the sacrarium due to their use as sacred clothes with the Eucharistic species. 59) What else is placed on the altar for the consecration? The chalice, which will hold the wine and water for consecration, is usually placed on the altar as well, along with the paten holding the main Host to be consecrated. The Sacramentary or missal is also placed on the altar so the priest can pray the prayers of the Mass. Once the gifts are brought up and accepted by the priest, he gives them to the altar servers to bring to the al-tar. Sometimes the deacon and the priest will use incense to incense the gifts and altar, and then the deacon or other minister will incense the priest and people.

May Rosary in Honor of

the Blessed Mother The Rosary offers us an opportunity to step back for a few minutes from the noise and din of life. In our busy modern life with its distractions and discouragements, the Rosary can be a wonderful means of prayer and an easy way to come into contact with the presence of God, Our Lady, and

the saints. It is an especially good technique for growing in deeper understanding of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The mysteries of the Rosary now take us through the whole Gospel, into the mysteries of eternal life, which are dimly but powerfully portrayed in the Book of Revelation. (Father Benedict Groeschel, C.F.R) The month of May is dedicated to the celebration of Mary the Mother of God. Please join us in praying a scriptural rosary in honor of our Mother Every Thursday in the month of May (May 4, May 11, May 18 and May 25) at 7:00 pm at St. Mary’s Church.

Special collection for The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception

Next week, our parish will participate in a national collection for the Trinity Dome to complete the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, DC, before its 100th anniversary. Also known as America’s Catholic Church, the National Shrine has been a century in the making, built by and for the faithful of our great nation in honor of our Blessed Mother, the patroness of the United States. Become a part of Mary’s Shrine and help to bring completion to our church. For more information, please visit: www.trinitydome.org.

Calling all Widows Our parish widows group meet on April 21, a week later than usual because Good Friday was on the 14th. Father Jossy cele-brated the Holy Mass at 10 am and prayed for all our intentions, our members, especially the sick, and all our deceased spouses. He also prayed for the ladies who had birthdays during the month. After Mass, we went to Español Restaurant to celebrate Father Jossy's Birthday, which was April 3. We enjoyed a deli-cious lunch and Celeste brought a beautiful Birthday cake. We gave spiritual bouquet cards to Father and to Rosemary Clemons and Jo Fiellen, whose birthdays were in April. We all had a very special day. Our next meeting will be at 10:00 am on May 12, and we invite all widows to join us. All are welcome. For more information, please call Celeste Gisla at (916) 363-8358 or Gloria Gabrielli at (916) 455-9946. Happy Spring.
