for those who love him, this God has revealed to us

through the Spirit.

For the past 15 years, a special collection benefiting the retired priests of our diocese was taken up each spring. Since its inception, this special collection has been held during the month of May, but now moved to a new home on our liturgical calendar, Ash Wednes-day. Our prayer is that this additional exposure for this important cause will enhance the effort to provide for the nine priests of our diocese that truly need our as-sistance in their retirement years. Remember that all the funds collected for this special collection will stay within our area, benefiting only the retired priests that have served us in our diocese. May the coming days grant you opportunity for prayerful consideration of your donation with the worthy cause. Let St. Mary of the Pines Church give special support to this important effort. Second Collection: Church in Central & Eastern Europe.

Did you know that a black African

Catholic, Saint Anthony of Alex-

andria, is known as the patriarch

of monks? He was born in Upper

Egypt, in a village of Memphis,

near Thebes. His parents were rich

Christians. Shortly after inheriting

his parents’ fortune, he sold all of

his vast fortune and gave the pro-

ceeds to the poor, sent his sister to

a nunnery and retired to an old ruin of a tomb. He only ate

every three of four days and spent his time at manual labor

and prayer. Most of what we know about the life of St An-

thony is in the Greek vita (Life of Antony) by Athanasius,

circulated in Latin. According to Athanasius, the devil fought

St Anthony by afflicting him with boredom, laziness, and the

phantoms of women, which he overcame by the power of

prayer, Archdiocese of Washington, Office of Black Catho-

2020 Annual Diocesan Stewardship Appeal

During our time of worship this weekend we are taking the time to offer everyone the opportunity to support our 2020 Annual Diocesan Stewardship Appeal which is the first for our newly ordained Bishop Francis Malone. By supporting our Appeal, you are uplifting the important work of Christ in our diocese and helping our faith community to answer the call of “What Shall I Re-turn to the Lord?” Note the Appeal brochures, pledge cards, & return envelopes that are in your pews, making it easy for you to make your pledge or one-time gift to this important cause. Please join in generosity to help St. Mary of the Pines Church do our part by supporting the programs and ministries of our Annual Appeal. If you are not in possession of any 2020 Appeal materi-als, please ask an usher to assist you in obtaining the needed items that will allow you to participate in this effort with a ten-month pledge.

St. Mary’s will be hosting a Blood Drive on Sunday, March 8, 2020 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in Vandegaer Hall. Come give the gift of life. Call Steve Lenox @ 318-286-9076 with any

questions.
