PALM SUNDAY OF THE PASSION OF THE LORD APRIL 9, 2017
This week we end our homily series on Knowing Your Tree of Sin. We have been reflecting on how we will struggle with the seven deadly sins of pride, wrath, lust, envy, gluttony, avarice (greed), and sloth sometime during our lives. Hopefully you have become more aware of the sins you commonly fall into by tracking which of the seven deadly sins you struggle the most with. At the root of our tree of sin is an ungodly self-reliance centered on some idol or false God that we have put in God's place. The deeper roots are the ways we have been wounded in our life and the lies about ourselves that we have believed based on those wounds. This concept is explained in more depth in the book Be Healed by Dr. Bob Schutts. You can find a tree of sin diagram created by Dr. Bob at http://www.stmartindp.org/lenten-study to fill in.
Last week we reflected on the deadly sin of sloth and its false god of comfort where we avoid what God is inviting us to do by losing ourselves in false comforts. This week we are reflecting on the last of the the deadly sins which is wrath or an ungodly anger. It's false god is when we want control. We all have moments when we feel out of control and that is when wrath can enter in. Wrath like all the deadly sins has two forms. The more familiar form is yelling and hitting where we express the wrath out loud. The less familiar form is when we give the silent treatment and withhold hugs or basically act passive-aggressively. We like to be in control because we feel control will protect us from getting hurt. However, the more controlling we become the more we hurt others and ultimately ourself. God is the one we should surrender all control to like the saints and Jesus did.
In this weekend's Gospel, we hear the Passion Narrative which is the ultimate example of surrender and giving up of control. Jesus was God and yet he chose to submit himself to the most incredible forms of physical and emotional suffering. He basically gave control over himself to those who persecuted him. Jesus did this out of love for all of us and out of obedience to the will of his heavenly Father. When we give up control we allow ourselves freely to do the will of the Father. Jesus felt a joy even in the midst of his suffering because he was doing God the Father's will. Out of this surrender came a great victory and out of our surrender God will always bring a victory as well. Please see the on the other page on how to use the daily Lenten Meditations our parish is offering to enter more into scripture this Lenten Season. This is the last week for the Lenten reflections and a great way to enter into Holy Week.
Jesus help us to avoid wrath by surrendering control to you, Fr. Charlie

HOLY WEEK
With the Lord there is mercy and fullness of redemption. We can help make things new with small, yet joyful sacrifices. The works of mercy are charitable actions by which we come to the aid of our neighbor. With continued generosity to the Ashes to Easter Lenten Mission Campaign, local missionaries are able to instruct, advise, console, and comfort the poor in the mission areas they serve. Please be generous.
Can you spend one regular weekly hour with our Lord in Adoration? A regular Adoration hour can transform your life. Adoration is a wonderful gift of our Catholic faith. You can come to the Ado-ration chapel at any time. There are still open hours available:
Tuesday 10:00 p.m. Wednesday 9:00 p.m. Thursday 9:00 p.m.
Please email [email protected] to sign up for your regular Adoration hour and receive more information.
For any comments, feedback, or suggestions, please email [email protected]. The account is checked weekly on Mondays.
Lenten Study ~ Knowing Your Tree of Sin
Our Lenten Homily Series is entitled Knowing Your Tree of Sin. Each of us has a tree of sin particular to us that we struggle with and Lent is a good time to come to knowledge of this tree. Each week we will focus on one of the seven deadly sins and six ways this sin can manifest itself in our lives. There will be a saint you can reflect on each day who struggled with this sin but overcame it with God's help. We often forget all saints struggled with the same sins we do, but they learned to rely on God to such a degree that they overcame these struggles. You can go to www.stmartindp.org/lenten-study to view pdfs of the daily reflections or listen to the reflections at http://www.smdpaudio.info/. The audio reflections can also be found on the myParish app.
Today is Palm Sunday and the beginning of the holiest of Christian weeks. Let us pray for the grace to take up our own cross and to follow Jesus through death to new life.
Please support the Society of St. Vincent de Paul so that together we can help the poor as they carry their cross of suffering and pain.
Our next meeting will be on Wednesday, April 12th at 7:30 pm in the education center.
