St. Martha Parish 1100 W. Grand River Avenue, Okemos MI 48864 517-349-1763 www.st-martha.org

From Father Mike’s Desk

Well, here we are. A great priest is saying his last regularly scheduled Masses at Saint Martha this weekend. After each Mass, please stop by the new conference room and bid adieu to Father David. Tell him what his time here has meant to you and to the parish. I can sure say what it's meant to me. Remember, I'd been a priest for all of eleven months when assigned here. And I'm still only about three years from ordination. Being able to live with an experienced pastor -- a man of endless wisdom, ever open to the promptings of the Spirit -- has been an immense help. And, as you readily can imagine, his great intelligence, bountiful wit, and solid grounding made him a wonderful person with whom to share a home.

So where are we on priests to help here? While no other priest is being sent here at present, you will see some other priests helping out at Saint Martha in coming months. And I hope to find an energetic retired priest to come live here next year or the year after. Looking farther out, I can report that, a couple weekends ago, the Bishop held a Sunday gathering of men discerning the priesthood. Some were in high school, contemplating entering Saint John Vianney college seminary at Saint Thomas University in Saint Paul, Minnesota. Others were college students or college graduates, deciding whether to enter Sacred Heart Major Seminary in Detroit. The total gathering included 27 young men! The ones I already knew (including a young man from this parish), or whom I met there, were outstanding. Despite some of the challenges that Church faces (and what era has lacked challenges?), the future looks bright.

Speaking of the challenges facing the Church, we cannot ignore the lingering effects of the Scandal. While genuine and lasting progress has been made -- the Church has become a national leader in protecting young people -- even one incident of mistreatment of a child is way too many. Available at the exits for each parishioner is a free copy of Bishop Robert Barron's "Letter to a Suffering Church." In 105 concise pages, Bishop Barron forthrightly acknowledges the gravely sinful and utterly criminal nature of the misbehavior. He goes on to place the issue in a context that Catholic Christians can well understand. His five chapter titles are illuminative: 1. The Devil's Masterpiece 2. Light From Scripture 3. We Have Been Here Before 4. Why Should We Stay? 5. The Way Forward Bishop Barron's book is short, well written, and free. Please take one, and read it to its conclusion. Needless to say, feel free to come see me if you wish to talk about it (or anything else).

As summer gives way to early autumn, let's allow the Light of Christ to shine in our homes and in our hearts!

Did you Know:

Mass Intentions provide a more powerful prayer offering for those souls, and, “contribute to the good of the Church and by that offering share its concern to support its ministers and works” (CCC 945 §2).

To schedule Intentions, visit the Parish Office on weekdays or on Sundays between the morning Masses.

“Spiritually leadership is the power to change the

atmosphere by one’s presence,

the unconscious influence that makes Christ and spiritual

things real to others.”

V. 32 No. 35 August 31 / September 1, 2019 Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

Sister Anita’s Corner

God in your goodness, you have made a home for the forsaken … you are defender of those who are crying out …

May we find our strength within our blessing others.

You sent Jesus Christ your Son among us as redeemer and Lord. Jesus was moved with compassion for the poor and the powerless, for the sick and the sinner; he made himself neighbor to the oppressed and afflicted.

Blessed are you who look into the eyes of the abandoned and marginalized, and show them their worth. May we grow in sensitivity to others as they grapple with challenges and suffering. May we grow in serving and finding opportunities to serve those whom others do not even see.

Blessed are you who pray and work for peace in all areas of people’s lives. May we grow in generosity of mind and hands - putting forth creative ideas and up-lifting activities, projects and programs; discerning and doing.

Blessed are you who protect and care for our common home, Earth. May we grow together in responding to caring for our Home, Earth; fostering and allowing for sustaining life, diversity and beauty. May we grow as we go from challenge to challenge; willing to change our everyday practices so all may have life.

Blessed are you who bring their growing awareness into their prayer with our Loving God, allowing decisions and actions to be held in the embrace of doing God’s will. May we grow in knowing our own souls … the center of our love. May we grow in awareness of what others are doing with the power of the Spirit most Holy. May we center our life decisions, our vocation and our everydayness in listening for God’s voice and direction.

What is God blessing in you?

Year of Prayer: Forming Missionary Disciples Father, You invited each of us to share in the life and ministry of Your Son, Jesus. Send Your Holy Spirit to form our Parish as a community of missionary disciples. Teach us how to hear Jesus, to love Jesus, and to share Your gift of salvation with everyone we meet. Through the witness and intercession of Mary, guide me to deepen my commitment as a disciple of Jesus. Lead our Parish to grow as an intentional community, committed to go and announce the Gospel of the Lord. We ask these blessing in the name of Your Son, Jesus Christ. Amen.

Ever wonder what the Catholic Faith is all about? Interested in finding out more??

Join us on Sunday, September 22 from 6 to 8 pm for a very informal and informative introduction to the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA). There is no commitment, this is just a chance to come and see if now is the time for you to begin the journey of growing in your relationship with Christ which may lead to Baptism and Confirmation in the Catholic Faith at the Easter Vigil in April. We have

a great team of leaders ready to guide you with stories of how and why they entered the Church, teachings from scripture and how our Bible is so alive and relevant today, as well as the amazing gift of our Catholic Sacraments and Traditions. We will meet in the Saint Kateri Room (just across from the back entrances to the church near the stairway). Look for signs and come and join us. If you would like more information, email Clinton Warren at [email protected] or call the Parish Office.

High School Youth Group is Back for the Fall!!! Every teen is already a member, so come and check it out!

We meet each Sunday beginning September 8 from 6 to 8 pm in our Conference Room. We have food, good times with friends, old and new and a great chance to talk about how our Faith fits in with our real lives. Parents, this is the age our children really need to work on taking the strong foundation that we gave them as children and build on it making their faith their own. Talking and sharing with other teens in their same stage of life is so important and vital in making this happen. Remember, when we get to heaven, God isn’t going to care how good of a soccer player we are or what grade we got on our SAT, He is going to ask us if we put Him first. And as parents, He is going to ask us if we did our very best to get our children to heaven.

Meet our Parish Room’s Patron Saints: Blessed Solanus Casey, O.F.M. Cap.

Bernard Francis “Barney” Casey was born on a family farm Oak Grove, Wisconsin on November 25, 1870. His parents were Irish immigrants, and Barney was the sixth of sixteen children. The family moved several times, and Barney left home at 17 to begin working. After a variety of jobs in Wisconsin and Minnesota, he entered the seminary of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee. He struggled with the course-work and was told that he should instead consider joining a religious order. He found his way to Detroit, where he joined the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin (the Capuchin Franciscans) in 1897. He was given the religious name of Solanus, after Francisco Solano y Jiménez, O.F.M., a Franciscan saint who died in South America in the early 1600s.

Solanus again struggled in his studies, with the eventual result that he was ordained a “simplex priest” in 1904. A “simplex priest” (this category no longer exists in the Church) could say Mass, but could not preach or hear Confessions. After several assignments in and around New York City, he was transferred in 1924 to Saint Bonaventure on Mount Elliott Street in Detroit, where he stayed until 1945. During that time, Father Solanus served as the porter (doorkeeper and receptionist) of the Franciscan house. He also helped found the Capuchin Soup Kitchen, which continues to this day its ministry of feeding the poor.

Unable to preach or hear Confessions, Father Solanus conducted prayer services for the sick and conversed with persons who stopped by Mount Elliott Street to talk with him. His own prayer life was centered on Eucharistic, and he would spend long evening hours before the Tabernacle. Over the years, it became evident that, with the prayers and intercession of Father Solanus, the Lord was working miraculous cures and accomplishing other great wonders.

In failing health, Father Solanus spent several years to Hunting-ton, Indiana, before returning to Detroit in 1956. On July 31, 1957, at the age of 86, Father Solanus died in Room 305 of Saint John Hospital on Moross Road in Detroit. It has been estimated that 20,000 people walked past his casket as he awaited funeral and burial. Today, he is buried at the Father Solanus Casey Center on Mount Elliott Street in Detroit. His 2017 beatification at Ford Field in Detroit was attended by about 60,000 people.

Welcome the Stranger Among Us Friday, October 11

The immigration issue has become a critical topic in our nation - new laws, deportations, families being separated, unaccompanied children, I.C.E. raids, caravans of Hispanic fleeing to the U.S., and more. It is natural to have mixed feelings knowing that many enter the U.S. illegally but at the same time knowing that Holy Mother Church teaches us to welcome our neighbor - just as Joseph and Mary experienced when they fled to Egypt to protect baby Jesus from Herod. This Diocesan conference will sensitize and inform attendees about the reality of immigration in our Diocese, from the perspective of the Catholic Faith, to provide us with the tools to bring Pastoral Care and protection to immigrants. ALL interested in learning more about welcoming refugees and immigrants are encouraged to attend. To register, visit https://welcomethestranger.eventbee.com.
