WELCOME to ST. MARK’S!

Wherever you are on your faith journey, please know you are welcome to celebrate life with us. Please sit anywhere in the Nave—if you use a hearing aid with a T-setting, you need to sit within the front three rows to access our tele-loop system. You may also ask an usher to borrow one of our infrared headsets. We offer open communion, our way of inviting any and all to partake in the Eucharistic supper: this is God’s meal. We gather around the altar and you are most welcome regardless of your religion, beliefs, or practices. Childcare: the Nursery is open! Children up to age 3 are welcome. Take the stairs to the lower level; turn right to go down the hall to the Nursery, which will be the last room on your right. Announcements are at the back of this bulletin; you will also hear oral announcements during the service. To become more informed and engaged with the community, you are invited to subscribe to our weekly electronic newsletter at www.stmarks.net/gospelnewsletter. Restrooms are available in the foyer and on the lower level. Lost & Found is managed by our Sexton, maintenance contractor Ed Green. Please contact him or his staff (David Durant & Keith Green) to see if your item has been found or to turn in an item you’ve found. (240-447-0027)

has been part of our community since 1965. The center altar allows a changing hanging…for Pentecost, it is the Honduras Cross, which symbolizes St. Mark's connection with the broader Anglican Communion and our obligations to our sisters and brothers around the world, particularly with our sister congregations in the San Marcos Cluster in Honduras. Eileen Blumenthal and the 2000 Mission to Honduras designed the cross, and Eileen commissioned its construction in Honduras as a gift to St. Mark's community. The Macramé cross hanging above the altar was made in the early '70s by seminarian Ted Vorhees and his wife as a gift to St. Mark's in thanksgiving for his time with us.

Opening Sentences

Bishop What can we do without God’s help? People With God, all things are possible.

Bishop Every house is built by someone, People but the builder of all things is God.

Bishop Praise God who made heaven and earth. People Praise God who blesses us abundantly.

Bishop Who builds a house of holy work People In our midst, marvelously doing all things. The Collect of the Day

Bishop Let us pray, saying together, All O God, we gather to celebrate and to give thanks for one hundred twenty-seven years of the living witness of St Mark’s Church and to rededicate our parish hall wing to your purposes. We pray your presence in this place and in our living that we, in the years to come, may continue to welcome, worship, and witness to your way of faith, hope and love; through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Savior and brother. Amen. The people are seated.

The Story of Vision 2020

Paul Roberts Abernathy, Rector, Kenn Allen and Mike Townsend, Vision 2020 Steering Committee Co-Chairs

Rector In the summer of 2009, recognizing that our aging facilities were no longer able to serve our needs, the Vestry directed then-Senior Warden Kenn Allen and me to begin a process of evaluating our physical plant, the needs of our staff and programs, and our place in the broader community.

Kenn Paul and I convened the first of numerous groups that would gather over the next five years to offer counsel, to brainstorm, to keep us grounded in the tension between dreams and reali ties, and to lead. Our initial analysis was that our space needed renovation and expansion to meet not just our current needs, but to allow for flexibility and growth in the future.

Mike In early 2010, we embarked on a journey down a winding and unpredictable road that brought us to today. We began a comprehensive discernment process, with assistance from Andi Tillmann from the Episcopal Church Foundation, to determine what changes were needed and how they could be supported. The discernment process had three elements. The first, the Building Committee examined our buildings and systems and studied the relevant zoning, legal, building code, and historic preservation issues.

Kenn The second, a Dream-catching Committee, invited everyone in the community to articulate ideas, needs and desires for St. Mark’s, a process that yielded more than 1,000 dreams for our buildings, our programs, and our priorities, from the mundane to the outlandish and every thing in between.

Mike The third, the Community Engagement Committee, examined our relationship with the greater community, and offered ways our facilities could function with less impact on, and more respect for, the environment.

Kenn At the end of this process, the consensus was that we needed to undertake a major renovation and expansion of our facilities. We set clear goals and, with the parish and the Vestry committed to the project, we engaged the professionals who would help bring our dreams to reality: our project manager, our architect, and, ultimately, our contractor.

Mike In 2011, we began to raise funds for the project and, by early 2012, we had more than $1.8 million in pledges. We made plans to sell Baxter House, home to our staff for more than two decades that no longer met our staff or community needs. Our consultants designed a variety of options for the renovation and expansion of our historic parish hall wing. 5

Page 6: St. Mark’s Episcopal ChurchSt. Mark’s Episcopal Church ... · Prelude Processional Grayston Ives (b. 1948) We GatherWe Gather Crucifer: Brian Derr (leads with the brass Latin

Kenn But then our efforts stalled. It became clear that our needs and our desires exceeded our ability to pay for them. The options available to us, if we stayed within the budget of the funds al ready raised, pleased no one. In a series of town hall meetings, the community expressed its frustration and disappointment.

Rector It was in this atmosphere that then-Senior Warden Cecilia Monahan and I convened the Vestry for its spring retreat in April 2012. There, the leadership of this parish decided to replace frustration with optimism, determination…and faith. Following an intense and moving discussion, the Vestry directed the Steering Committee to proceed with a more complete design that would have a base project and several separately priced alternatives, ones which could be included in the current project if additional funds could be raised or which could be added in the future. The Vestry also directed the Vision 2020 leadership to re-open the Capital Campaign and solicit additional funds from the community. In that meeting, we reaffirmed our original vision and vowed to move forward, together, as a community with a shared vision.

Mike The response from the community overwhelmed us. More than $1.1 million additional was raised, bringing our total to more than $2.9 million from 296 pledges. Combining the proceeds from the sale of Baxter House, borrowing from our Endowment, and the support of our neighbors at National Capital Bank, we had sufficient funds not just for the base project but for our major alternate additions as well.

With these gifts and the loan, we have expanded our historic parish hall wing, adding a second- floor office suite for our staff. We have expanded our undercroft, adding a new wing with four meeting rooms, spaces for our choir and our teens, and new restrooms. We have renovated our foyer to create more welcoming space and have built a new sacristy adding a private vesting room for our clergy.

Kenn We also have been able to address major deferred maintenance issues and to invest in needed capital improvements for long term cost savings. We now have a new boiler, a new roof over the Dance Studio, a repointed south wall to repair extensive damage from ivy, and a fully repaired north roof over the parish hall. The original undercroft has been repainted and re-carpeted – and we have undertaken major waterproofing along its south wall to address chronic leaks.

Mike Thanks to the active engagement, creative thinking and wise counsel of the Green Lions, we were able to conduct this work without losing sight of our commitment to the environment. The most significant outcome was our decision to invest in solar panels on the new south roof of the Parish Hall. Not so visible are nearly 60 additional items where we set and met expectations for sustainability. Our interior design team – Ed and Nancy Corr, Tracy Councill Therese Doreau, and Doris Burton – worked hard to give us great finishes for our eyes and functional, durable furniture for working, learning and socializing.

Kenn This project would not have happened without the commitment, support and engagement of hundreds of people. Their names are in the commemorative Project Report you will be receiving today. Still, we must highlight these key people: our architects, Jeremy Arnold and Adam Greene from the firm of Bonstra Haresign, and their engineering team; our project manager, Alex Berley, of E&G Group; our contractor, Monarc Construction and their leadership team of Tri Minh Phan, John Whitson, Jack Fanning and Sayi Aguilera; Monarc’s 30 subcontractors and the estimated 200 men and women who worked on the building over the past year, and our neighbors who supported us and showed great patience with what was, for them, a very long year.

Mike But our most important asset is all of you, the people of St. Mark’s. Our Senior Warden Grady Hedgespeth helped ground and guide us through these two years of construction. Our Transition Team has been critical to helping our community through the disruption of packing and moving for construction, helping maintain our services and programs during construction, and guiding us back into our new space; the Altar Guild, and the Dance and Yoga classes adapted to major changes in their operation; everyone who figured out a new way to get things done, who offered

6

Page 7: St. Mark’s Episcopal ChurchSt. Mark’s Episcopal Church ... · Prelude Processional Grayston Ives (b. 1948) We GatherWe Gather Crucifer: Brian Derr (leads with the brass Latin

their homes for meetings and even choir practice, everyone who came through the doors and understood the need to be flexible and accepted the disruption; everyone who visited our elegant Port-a-johns; Ed, Keith, and David of Greene’s Maintenance kept our available space ready for use.

And, most important of all, our staff – Paul, Justi, Jeff, Marcella, Susan, and Angela adjusted to trailer life and continued to care for and support us.

All these people, and many more, carried us through the unknown terrain of the long months of construction and helped us all survive with patience, grace, and good humor.

Rector Today is the culmination of our journey down that long and winding road from dreams to reality. Through all of this we have learned our community is strong, and faithful, and generous. When the Spirit moves among us, the people of St. Mark’s can do great things, not just for ourselves but for the community around us and for the generations to come. The Recognition

Rector Dear friends, it is impossible to count the hours given by all who contributed time, talent, and skill in ideas, concepts, design, and construction. These parishioners and professionals committed themselves to bringing the light of our dreams to the life of fruition. We now offer our gratitude for their labors completed and yet to be undertaken. The Transition Team comes to the Altar.

Associate Rector Jack and Phil, Transition Team chairs; Bobbie, Charlie, Jack. Janice, and Nora: People We, the people of St. Marks, offer our thanks.

Then I said to them, “You see the trouble we are in, how Jerusalem lies in ruins with its gates burned. Come, let us build the wall of Jerusalem, that we may no longer suffer disgrace. And I told them of the hand of my God which had been upon me for good, and also of the words that the king had spoken to me. And they said, “Let us rise up and build.” So they strengthened their hands for the good work. But when others heard of it, they derided us and despised us and said, ”What is this thing that you are doing?” Then I replied to them, ”The God of heaven will make us prosper, and we, his servants, will arise, and build. So we built the wall; and the wall was joined together. For the people had a mind to work.

The Epistle Philippians 2:1-13 Read by Ed Corr

If then there is any encouragement in Christ, any consolation from love, any sharing in the Spirit, any compassion and sympathy, make my joy complete: be of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility regard others as better than yourselves. Let each of you look not to your own interests, but to the interests of others. Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited, but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in human likeness. And being found in human form, he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death-- even death on a cross. Therefore God also highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, in heaven and on earth and un-der the earth, and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Therefore, my beloved, just as you have always obeyed me, not only in my presence, but much more now in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; for it is God who is at work in you, enabling you both to will and to work for his good pleasure.

Gospeller The Gospel of Jesus People

Jesus said, “You are the salt of the earth; but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be throw out and trodden under foot by men. You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hid. Nor do men light a lamp and put it under a bushel, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.”

Gospeller The Gospel of Jesus People The Sermon The Right Reverend Mariann Edgar Budde, Bishop of Washington The Affirmation of Faith from Grace Cathedral in San Francisco, CA

All We believe in God the Creator, by whom every person in heaven and on earth is named. We believe in God the Son, who lives in our hearts through faith, and fills us with his love. We believe in God the Holy Spirit, who strengthens us with power from on high. We believe in one God: Creator, Redeemer, and Sustainer. Amen.

Jesu, the very thought of thee with sweetness fills the breast; But sweeter far thy face to see, and in thy presence rest.

No voice can sing, no heart can frame, nor can the mem’ry find A sweeter sound than Jesus’ name, the savior of mankind.

O hope of ev’ry contrite heart, o joy of all the meek, To those who ask how kind thou art, how good to those who seek.

But what to those who find? Ah! this nor tongue nor pen can show; The love of Jesus, what it is none but his loved ones know.

Jesu, our only joy be thou as thou our prize wilt be; In thee be all our glory now, and through eternity. Amen. Presentation Hymn 288, v.3 Dix

As thy prospering hand hath blessed, may we give thee of our best; And by deeds of kindly love for thy mercies grateful prove; Singing thus through all our days praise to God, immortal praise. Eucharistic Prayer of the Master Builder

Bishop God be with you. People And also with you.

Bishop Lift up your hearts. People We lift them to God.

Bishop Let us give thanks to God. People It is right to give God our thanks and praise.

Bishop We give thanks, Almighty God, for in the beginning you set the earth upon its foundations and created all that exists. As architect and master builder of the universe, you fashioned the orders of the world and humankind in your image. You built the kingdom of heaven and marked out the limits of the earth. And when your work was complete, you called a people to be your own. You blessed them with gifts and made of them a holy nation. When they turned away, you sent your own Son, a humble carpenter from Nazareth, to reveal your love, to bring us into your kingdom, to fashion us into a Church of living stones. For all this, we praise you and join the hosts of heaven in their unending hymn:

Sanctus Peter Crisafulli

Bishop And so, Father and Mother of all, as living stones built upon the foundation of Jesus Christ, we come into your presence and gather at the table to which we have been called, to receive your grace and to find strength to do your will, and continue to build your kingdom.

On his last night in this world, Jesus spoke words of thanks over bread; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat. This is my body; I give it for you. Do this to remember me.

After supper, he took and blessed the cup, then gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is a new covenant, sealed with my blood that will be shed for you and for all people. Do this to remember me.

With joy and with thanksgiving, we proclaim the mystery of faith: Memorial Acclamation Peter Crisafulli

Bishop We lift this bread and cup before you, O God, as an offering of thanksgiving and praise. Sanctify these gifts by your Holy Spirit and sanctify us with your grace and build us into a fellowship of unity and peace. People Come, Holy Spirit, come.

Bishop Therefore, O God, with this bread and cup, we remember Jesus’ witness to your love. We remember his sacrifice and death, his glorious resurrection, and his ascension to your right hand. We look to the day when he shall come again. The Great Amen Peter Crisafulli

12

Page 13: St. Mark’s Episcopal ChurchSt. Mark’s Episcopal Church ... · Prelude Processional Grayston Ives (b. 1948) We GatherWe Gather Crucifer: Brian Derr (leads with the brass Latin

Bishop And now, let us pray as we were taught: All Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. Breaking of the Bread Fraction Anthem Peter Crisafulli

The Communion

Everyone is invited to God’s Table. Gather, one group at a time, around the altar platform. Remain until everyone has received the bread and wine and has been dismissed by the Presider, saying, “Go in peace.” You may consume the bread, then receive the wine by taking a sip from the chalice or goblet OR you may hold the bread, which will signal that you wish to intinct (dip it) into the chalice or the goblet. A non-alcoholic alternative to wine is offered in the plain goblet, and gluten-free crackers are available upon request.

The Dedication of the Parish HouseThe Dedication of the Parish HouseThe Dedication of the Parish HouseThe Dedication of the Parish House Exhortation

Bishop Brothers and sisters in Christ: after much prayer, planning, and work by so many, we gather now to bless this newly renovated and expanded parish house to the glory of God. It will be a center for all, a place where community and church come together to meet and to plan, to discern and to decide, in fellowship to feast, to learn and to grow, to make merry with music, dance, and theater; to reach in and to reach out with yoga and meditation, to know and to be come known.

Hear the words of the Apostle Paul, “We are God’s servants, working together. You are God’s field, God’s building. According to the grace God has given to me, like a skilled master builder, I laid a foundation, and someone else is building on it. Each builder must choose with care how to build on it. For no one can lay any foundation other than the one that has been laid; that foundation is Jesus Christ.” (1 Corinthians 3.9-11)

People of St. Mark’s, you have heard the story of the building you undertook to expand and renovate. As God has blessed you in this undertaking, guiding your good work to completion, is it your intention now to dedicate this building to God's service? People It is our intent, with God’s help.

The bishop blesses the door to the foyer; the ribbon to the new wing is cut.

Recessional Fanfare William Mathias (1934-1992)

The people process to the areas following the two banners: 2nd floor offices and Arts studio, Foyer and Sacristy door OR Undercroft (Choir Room, new classrooms.)

The Bishop begins in the foyer.

Membership Committee Gracious God: Bless the community that welcomes all. Give us an open heart to follow our great teacher who gathered all to him. Bishop Blessed are you, O Lord our God, Ruler of the universe. You have taught your people that we will be welcomed into the kingdom. Bless this foyer, dedicated to the Foster family, and make it a reminder to us of your love for all. All Amen. The Bishop moves to the sacristy door.

Worship Co-Chairs Gracious God, look with favor on the clergy who lead us to your holy place and the hands that prepare your table. Bishop Blessed are you, O Lord our God, Ruler of the universe. Your gifts are many, and you have made all things to give you glory. Bless this space dedicated to the preparations for the work of the people. May those hands be ever mindful of our link to you. All Amen. The Bishop blesses the foyer, then moves to the 2nd floor, facing the new offices.

Paul, Justi, Angela; Bert and Mary Cooper (at the door to the offices) O God, eternal ground of all that is: show yourself to us as we use these offices for the administration of our parish; Bishop Blessed are you, O Lord our God, Ruler of the universe. Your gifts are many, and you have made all things to give you glory. Bless this parish as we honor parish historians, Bert and Mary Cooper, with dedicated archival space, and these offices and this conference room in honor of the rector of this parish, the Reverend Paul Roberts Abernathy. All Amen. The Bishop turns to the Dance Studio door:

Dance, Arts Chair, Yoga O Lord of the Dance: be present as we strive to create beauty. May all who practice and perform here, increase in spirit and in health. Bishop Blessed are you, O Lord our God, Ruler of the universe. Your gifts are many, and you have made all things to give you glory. Bless those who breathe life into performance and peace in this space named in honor of Mary Craighill. All Amen. The Bishop proceeds to the new undercroft.

The Bishop begins with the blessing of new wing.

CE Co-Ds, Youth Representatives, Outreach Co-chairs O God: reveal yourself to us and our children through the work we do for the greater world. Bishop Blessed are you, O Lord our God, Ruler of the universe. Your gifts are many, and you have made all things to give you glory. Bless us as we name this new wing in honor of Josephine Turner; the Lion’s Den created for our teens; these three classrooms in honor of Charles Penniman, the past and future Rectors, the lay leaders of this parish, and the library in honor of Verna Dozier. All Amen. The bishop blesses the entrances to the Lion’s Den and the three new classrooms.

The Bishop then turns first to the Music Studio and then choir room.

Jeff and the choir O God: make present in the music programs the abundance of your grace that through their discipline, all who practice and perform here may increase in spirit and in health. Bishop Blessed are you, O Lord our God, Ruler of the universe. Your gifts are many, and you have made all things to give you glory. Bless these spaces as we dedicate this new music studio in honor of Joya Cox. Bless the choir who bring glory to you through song, and bless their new space, dedicated by Bill Flanders in memory of his mother, Helen Flanders, who nurtured his love of music and his love of hymns. All Amen. The Bishop blesses the entrance to the music studio and the choir room, then proceeds to the parish hall doorway. The Parish Life chair, Steering and Transition greet the Bishop at the parish hall door.

Parish Life chair, Steering, and Transition Blessed God: embrace us as we prepare the bounty of the earth from this kitchen given to us so generously by Tucker and Jack Harris; bless the fruit of the vine served to us from the Winged Lion Pub, all who share as a community in this parish hall, and everywhere as we seek your truth. Bishop Blessed are you, O Lord our God, Ruler of the Universe: as this community gathers in this hall we now dedicate to the Reverend William MacNeil Baxter, bless them with the gift of remembrance. Let your love be manifest through them to all whose lives they touch. All Amen.

Bishop The Lord be with you. People And also with you.

Bishop Let us pray: All Blessed are you, O Lord our God, Ruler of the universe. Your gifts are many, and you have made all things to give you glory. Give us joy in all your works, and grant that these spaces may always be where your will is done and your name is glorified; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Final Blessing

Bishop May God bless you with a restless discomfort with easy answers so that you may seek truth boldly and love deep within your heart.

May God bless you with holy anger at injustice so that you may tirelessly work for justice, freedom, and peace among all people.

May God bless you with the gift of tears to shed with those who suffer so that you may reach out your hand to comfort them and transform their pain into joy.

May God bless you with the foolishness to believe that you really can make a difference in this world, so that you are able, with God's grace, to do what others claim cannot be done.

Alleluia, Alleluia! Let us go forth in peace, All In the name of our God. Alleluia! Alleluia! Amen!

The clergy and people proceed to the courtyard for the photograph.

AnnouncementsAnnouncementsAnnouncementsAnnouncements

Announcements, not to exceed 120 words, are to be submitted to [email protected] by 5:00 pm on the Tuesday preceding the Sunday you wish the announcement to run.

From the Office

1. TOURS OF THE NEW OFFICE SUITE. While we are eager to show off our wonderful new office suite to all who have made our amazing renovation happen, we are extra-busy right now, trying to complete our move, and simply do not have the time just yet. Once the contractors finish their work and we are able to get unpacked and settled in, we will offer scheduled tours -- the best way to show the most people what all their hard work has produced. Watch upcoming issues of The Gospel and the Sunday service bulletins for announcements about tour dates and times – and how to sign up.

2. DEADLINE FOR BULLETIN ANNOUNCEMETNS. Now that we’re past the move, the deadline for bul-letin announcements is again 5:00 pm, Tuesdays preceding the Sunday you wish the announcement to run. The maximum length is 125 words. The Parish Administrator for Programs & Facilities will edit an-nouncements for formatting and that exceed the word limit as necessary. Beginning October 5, each announcement can run in the bulletin for nor more than three weeks.

3. HOW TO RESERVE SPACE FOR CHURCH ACTIVITIES. Although we now have more meeting rooms than we’ve ever had, we are a very active community, so space is still at a premium. To schedule your next event or meeting: please go to the official parish calendar at www.stmarks.net/calendar/ to select the room you’d like to use for your event. Then, in writing, submit your request to Parish Administrator for Programs and Facilities Angela Nedd (drop/mail a paper request off to the church office or send to [email protected]). Your request should include: 1) the contact person’s name, phone number and email; 2) the date of your event; start and end times of your event; 3) your set-up and clean-up times; 4) your first and second room choices; 5) the name of the event; 6) the number of people attending. After receiving your request, Angela will confirm your reservation; if there is an unseen conflict, she will let you know and seek a suitable alternate location, if one is available. Thank you for your cooperation; this proc-ess allows requests to be expedited.

4. LOST AND FOUND: If you think you may have left something behind, please call our Maintenance Contractor, Ed Green, at 240-447-0027.

5. RENEWAL WORKS SURVEY IS OPEN: ONE OF FOUR WAYS TO GATHER INFORMATION! Last week we officially launch the St. Mark’s Renewal Works Survey (http://bit.ly/StMarks_RenewalWorks). We are excited to let you know that as of Tuesday (9/23) there have been over 135 “clicks” on the survey link and 71 completed surveys. This represents a response rate of about 22 percent (based on average Sunday attendance). We are off to a great start. Thank you to all those who have already com-pleted the survey! If you have not yet done so, you are invited to participate in this anonymous online sur-vey that will be available until October 12. This survey will provide each one of us with an opportunity to think about where we are spiritually as an individual and help us identify where we are most dynamic as a congregation. Your participation is vital to our collective success and we encourage you to take some time this week to respond to the survey. The survey will take approximately 30 to 40 minutes to complete and is completely anonymous. To take the survey, simply follow this link http://bit.ly/StMarks_RenewalWorks. For those without access to a computer, we will provide a limited number of laptop computers and a quiet space immediately following the October 5 and October 12 Sunday ser-vices. Paper copies of the survey are also available for those who do not have computer access. Ques-tions? Please contact Jim Ashley (202 631-8777; [email protected]) or Nadine Hathaway (202 253-7245; [email protected]). More information at: www.stmarksdsc.wordpress.com

9. WEEK-DAY SERVICE AND MEDITATION OPPORTUNITIES

Insight Meditation, Nave: Mondays, 7:30pm to 9:00pm

Thursday Noon Eucharist, Chapel; Thursdays 12:00-12:30pm

10. CHILDREN'S CHAPEL, a worship experience for young children and their parents, will return on Sun-day, October 5th from 9:00-9:20am. Room to be determined. Stay tuned!

11. SUNDAY MORNING SERVICES TO BEGIN WITH PRELUDE MUSIC. Beginning September 7, we formally begin the worship service with the Prelude. The Worship Committee asks that you respect this time by refraining from conversations in the Nave as much as possible. The Prelude is a musical offering that is designed to bring us together for worship, allowing for quiet reflection before the service begins. While greeting each other is important, we ask that you do so outside the Nave or near the doors so that others can have quiet time. For many people greeting in the Nave is preferable than outdoors, but we'd ask for your patience and flexibility as we try something new. Questions? Please contact Jessie Bab-cock or Alvin Moseberry, Worship Co-Chairs, at ([email protected]).

12. SEEKING NEW MEMBERS FOR LITURGY PLANNING TEAM Are you interested in learning how and why we do worship at St. Mark's? Have you ever wondered what's involved in crafting liturgy? Come to the next Liturgy Planning Team meeting and see what it's all about! Tasty beverages included! When: Wednesday, October 7, 7:00 pm. Where: Room A in the new undercroft.

Christian Ed

Christian Education Program 13. CHRISTIAN EDUCATION 2014-2015 CATALOGS. New Christian Education catalogs are in the tract racks and will soon be posted on the St Mark's website www.smarks.net/ministry-and-programs/course-catalog Pick up your copy of the catalog of classes, workshops and retreats for the coming year, illustrated with artwork from Sunday School banners, and beautifully designed by Karen Falk.

NEW! Hold the dates! 14. LIFE, COMMUNITY & FAITH CLASS (LCF). Religion can be understood as making sense out of our ex-istence, which can appear rather (at times, terribly) random. LCF offers us an opportunity to share our values and our questions, looking, in community with others, at how we function in our daily living and examining our responses to key life issues. With an emphasis on authenticity and curiosity, we share our spiritual journeys and consider how our stories are reflected in the Christian faith story, exploring how we seek and sometimes fail to connect with ourselves, others, and God. The class is open to all, especially newcomers. 2 weekend retreats are required as an integral part of the LCF experience. Dates and Time: Tuesdays, October 7-December 9, 7:30-9:30 pm. Weekends: Friday-Sunday, October 24-26 and December 5-7, Roslyn Center, Richmond, VA. Leaders: Paul Abernathy, Joe Calizo, Claire Hedgespeth, Grady Hedgespeth. Where: Adams Room. Fee: $250 (covers cost of 1st weekend; 2nd weekend paid via Christian Education fund). Questions? Email Joe Calizo ([email protected]) for more information.

New members are welcome; no formal training is required. When: Oc-tober 2 through May, Thursdays 7:30-9:00 p.m. Where: New Undercroft meeting room 13. Leaders: Andrew Stafford, Kathleen Grant, and Bill Jones. Fee: $25 contribution per semester, plus cost of chosen books. 17. MARCHING THROUGH THE BIBLE: LETTERS TO THE CORINTHIANS. In Paul's Letters to the Co-rinthians, in the large commercial city of Corinth, the Apostle is dealing with a seriously polarized commu-nity 25 years after the death of Jesus. Many issues raised by the Corinthians still resonate in today's church. The class discusses the Corinthians text assigned for that Sunday. Additional outside readings are not expected; we are trying to become familiar with reading and discussing the text itself. Regular at-tendance is encouraged. The course name Marching through the Bible is in memory of our long-time con-vener, Francis "Buzz" March. When: Sundays, October 5 through May, 10:00 am -11:00 am. Where: new undercroft meeting room. Convener: Bob Ewald. Fee: $25 contribution per semester.
