Or, put another way: I don’t encourage investment in our buildings because of their beauty or comfort--though they are both beautiful and comfortable. Rather, I encourage investment because our buildings are one of our major assets for ministry. Think about all the different connections that have been made in these walls. Thinks of all the baptisms, marriages, confirmations, and burials. Think of the support and succor that has been given and received at 2618 N. Hackett. It’s staggering to think of the love of God and of neighbor that has been incubated in our space. And I want to make sure that I am providing our descendants the very best physical plant possible to launch whatever creative missions they will undoubtedly launch. We are stewards of this corner of the world, and I want to encourage us to take that responsibility seriously. I hear moaning about the disrepair of our buildings now and again, but I would rather think of them as our inn, our asset. After the people of St. Mark’s, our physical presence is our largest asset and we ought to treat it as such. In the days and weeks to come, you’ll be hearing more about how we can be wise innkeepers looking at fire systems, safety and accessibility, building usage for mission and ministry, building usage for music and worship. We will figure out what we have, what we need, and what needs to change for the future. I thank God and our ancestors for leaving this physical plant to us, and I hope to do my best to pay that generosity forward. In Christ, Ian+ (Fr. Burch)

Friends in Christ, In a sermon recently, I played with the idea of St. Mark’s as an inn and its members as innkeepers. Every allegory has its problems, but I kind of liked this one because it gave me a different sense of our building. A church building is not only for our own use — not unlike an inn — but is geared toward the next person coming in the doors. We attend to the building, but we don’t have exclusive ownership of it. In the days and weeks to come, you’ll be hearing more about how we can be wise innkeepers — looking at fire systems, safety and accessibility, building usage for mission and ministry, building usage for music and worship. We will figure out what we have, what we need, and what needs to change for the future. I thank God and our ancestors for leaving this physical plant to us, and I hope to do my best to pay that generosity forward. In Christ, Ian+ (Fr. Burch)

DEACON’S CORNER

I often talk to you about volunteering either in the church or outside it. I have suggested all the different things you could do. I have said that no one is too young or too old to volunteer. I have often told you how when you do volunteer to serve the poor, the sick, the troubled, you are doing God’s work. We are his agents here on earth to bring about more fully, The Kingdom of God.

I believe we all have had calls to do God’s work whether we realized it or not. But the excuses we make: perhaps felt not smart enough, or had enough time, or any other reason we come up with. I could go on and on but I have a much better idea for you.

I want you to go on the St Mark’s Web Page and click sermons. Read the sermon that Ian gave on the 4th Sunday after Pentecost, Year C. It was Sunday, July 7th, 2019. Read it if you missed church that Sunday, or perhaps even read it again if you were there. It’s worth it!

He laid out the reasons why discipleship is so important. He also, using stories from his own life, laid out how we often don’t feel capable to follow God’s call. I want you to read it because it was one of the finest homilies that I have ever heard on discipleship. It really challenged me.

So that is my challenge to you. Read Ian’s homily and see where you can review your own situation. I think you will realize how often we feel that we just can’t answer God’s call, for any number of reasons. It is very comforting to hear again that God picks all of us for discipleship despite all the shortcomings we may feel we have. God doesn’t require a brainiac, or a person with finely honed leadership qualities, or lots of money or power. He just wants all of us working to bring about a better world for all.

Read it. You’ll love it.

~Michelle

WOMEN’S BOOK GROUP

The Women’s Book Group will be meeting on August 5 at 7 pm at the home of Carolyn Davies. Our book for discussion will be The End of Your Life Book Club by Will Schwalbe. This memoir is about a mother and son and books. During her treatment for cancer, Mary Anne Schwalbe and her son Will spent many hours sitting in waiting rooms together. To pass the time, they would talk about the books they were reading. Soon, they began to trade books and an informal book group of two was born. The book is also about the joy of reading and gives many suggestions of books. Books can be purchased at Boswell for a ten percent discount or borrowed from the library. If you need directions to Carolyn’s home contact the church office at [email protected].

THE SPIRITUAL LIFE AND HOW TO HAVE ONE: AN INTRODUCTION TO SPIRITUALITY

‘Spirituality’ is a popular term now; it’s part of the current standard response, “I’m spiritual, but not religious.” But, is there really a difference? Come spend a little time with Fr. Steve Peay and find out a bit about the spiritual life. You’ll discover that it’s not so bad to be ‘religious’ (once you get past the cultural baggage), and that all of us can have a spiritual life. Sessions will be on five Thursday evenings, starting July 18. We’ll begin at 6 p.m. with food and fellowship, and the teaching portion will be from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. The sessions will be led by the Very Rev. Steven Peay, Ph.D., FBS, Research Professor & Dean-President Emeritus Nashotah House Theological Seminary and Associate Dean & Canon Residentiary All Saints’ Cathedral. Fr. Peay is a lively and dynamic leader.

CHILDREN AND YOUTH MINISTRY

BIBLE STORY TIME VOLUNTEERS NEEDED While Sunday School is on hiatus for the summer, we will have a special Bible Story Time for our children. All Children are invited to come to church for the opening procession and the lessons. During the sermon, come to the Chapel to hear a story from the Bible and work on decorating our children's banner for the upcoming Church School year! You may rejoin your families at the time of the sharing of the Peace.

We need adults to be in the rotation as a Story Leader: email [email protected] or signup in the Parish Hall if you would like to volunteer. The Stories are already written and only need an engaging storyteller and leader!

SAFEGUARDING GOD’S CHILDREN TRAINING | 8/4

BAPTISM AND SOLEMN/FIRST COMMUNION CLASS St. Mark's will offer a Baptism and Solemn/First Communion Class this Summer. ST. MARK’S EPISCOPAL CHURCH

St. Mark’s is a growing, welcoming parish on Milwaukee’s Eastside. We are a vibrant community of sojourners and seekers. We are young and old, families, singles and couples, gay and straight, from a variety of backgrounds. Together we represent a diverse array of perspectives and life experiences. We believe that the Holy Spirit is at work in our lives and in the world and that we are called, both as individuals and as a community, to share Christ’s love with our neighbors. We hope that the community at St. Mark’s will help you to grow deeper in your faith and that you will find yourself enlivened by service to God and to God’s world.
