By the cup of grace...

“For a child has been born for us, a son given to us; authority rests upon his shoulders; and he is named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of

Peace.” Isaiah 9:6

Friends, I do not know any other way to phrase the season we are entering. We are in great anticipation and wonder of the events Isaiah speaks. This must change us, this has to change us, this needs to change us so that we in turn, can change the world.

Advent is an in-between time of the year. It is not just between Thanksgiving and Christmas, even though that is when it is on the calendar. Advent is all about what was and what is to be, about what has already happened and what is yet to come. It is a time of anticipation and expectancy. We live fully in the here and now, with all the joys and sorrows, victories and setbacks of a life in Christ. We love, laugh, get tired, make mistakes, hurt, rejoice, and grieve in the journey through this wonderful creation and re-creation given to us by God through Jesus our Savior. And we live in anticipation of the life yet to

come, having entered into the eternal journey through baptism, belief, faith, and practice. We are in-between the coming of Christ and his coming again, living the “now” with hopeful expectation that empowers and sustains us.

This season of Advent, and the next season of Christmas should be a big deal to us! I pray they are a big deal to all of you. I pray that you are making special plans with family and friends to remember the reason we worship and the eternal life and promise we have because of our Savior Jesus. I also pray you will make time to reflect on your personal relationship with Jesus. How are you living out this faith, the promises we have as fellow believers, and the hope of eternal life beyond this world!

Jesus was born into a world of chaos, disorder, hatred, violence, and persecution, but He brought peace. The kind of peace the world did not recognize. “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid.” Do not be troubled by this world, rather bask in the presence and peace of this, the season of Jesus is coming!

I love you, God loves you, and there is nothing you can do about it,

Pastor Bonnie

Monthly Newsletter

The Monthly Newsletter will go Quarterly beginning in

the new year in February. This is in an effort to use our

resources in the most effective way. We will rely more

on the Midweek News and on our St. Mark's website in

the future.

Adopt-a-Family

As is tradition here at St. Mark's, we are excited about this ministry. The loose change project, and giving envelopes in your bulletins are some of the ways we are collecting monetary donations for our adopted families. Money is being collected through December 17. The money collected will be traded in for Wal-Mart gift cards, which will then be distributed appropriately to the families. We have been giving gift cards in place of presents the past few years to allow families to purchase what they need. With so many different cultures and family circumstances, this has made it possible for families to create the Christmas that is best for them. THANK YOU so much for how you continue to always be such an outreach oriented and giving church family.

Save The Date!

General Conference 2018

The United Methodist Church

Voting on Results of the Commission on A Way Forward

As we approach the

Special General

Conference for The

United Methodist

Church it is important

that we do our best

to be informed about

the decisions that will

be made and how they affect the local church

regarding different viewpoints surrounding same

gender weddings and ordination of LBGTQ individuals

who are self-avowed and practicing. I have selected

two different books that I feel talk about this from

opposite perspectives that I recommend you read for a

better understanding of the background, history, and

current state of where we are as a denomination.

During January, I will be available every Tuesday

evening from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. for anyone that would

like to ask questions or visit with me about either one

of the books or related topics.

We will have several copies of each book available in

the office that you can either purchase or check out

and bring back so others can read them also.

On Sunday, January 27th at 1:00 p.m. I have invited 2

delegates that will be attending General Conference to

join us for an open discussion regarding General

Conference and the choices that will be before them to

vote upon.

Small Group Opportunity Pastor Bonnie is offering a small group study beginning Sunday January 20th from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. at the church on the book “What Are We Fighting For? Coming Together Around What Matters Most” by Thomas J. Bickerton. If you are interested in obtaining a book for the study you can find them very reasonably on Amazon. Pastor Bonnie has about a dozen copies that she will loan out, but prefers that we do not purchase new books for the this study. Please contact Pastor Bonnie know if you have any questions at all. Please also be in prayer over this as often as possible, that we would seek God’s will together and glorify God in our conversations and actions.

Heave Ho! Pull Together: December 2018 Building Team Update

Construction of the parking lot is behind schedule, due to weather conditions and miscommunication about installation of the bases for the two new light poles in the center area of the parking lot. The “re-excavation” for the bases did however allow for additional testing for proper drainage from the parking area through the new tile system. It was discovered a portion the drain tile did not have enough “fall.” So, that section of drain tile was dug deeper and replaced. Tested again, the drainage will now work as designed. But for the mix up on the install of the light pole bases, we would not have discovered the drainage issue. So we were able to make some lemonade out of lemons, as Ken Eaton put it. Anyway, Boomerang is planning to pour the concrete for the parking lot the week after Thanksgiving, followed by installation of the permeable pavers. At their cost, Boomerang will have to take additional steps to ensure the concrete sets up and cures properly in the sub-freezing temps we are now experiencing, including drawing any frost out of the ground before the pour, and covering the concrete. It is unlikely that the striping, directional arrows, and other line “painting” for the parking lot can be completed in the cold weather. We still hope to plant the 10 donated trees in the coming weeks, but the remaining plantings will have to wait until spring 2019. Upon completion of the parking lot, the principle balance on our current construction loan will be about $759,000. St. Mark’s has approximately $150,000 in “On the Corner” Capital Campaign commitments yet to be paid between now and March 31, 2021 (the end of the extended campaign period). St. Mark’s anticipated principle and interest payments on the construction loan will be a bit under $5,000 per month, starting in early 2019. These payments will be made from money held in the Building Expansion Fund (BEF). If and when the Building Expansion Fund is depleted, loan payments will be made out of donations to the general budget. As I have previously informed you, all gifts and donations designated for “On the Corner Capital Campaign/Building Expansion” projects are deposited in the “Building Expansion” designated fund, and are being used to pay all costs of the construction projects, including payments towards the construction loan. Recently, questions have been raised as to why donations or gifts designated for “On the Corner/Building Expansion,” or proceeds from the construction loan, are not being used to pay for the cost of furnishings needed for the new addition. During the On the Corner Capital Campaign, the Building Team presented estimated cost figures for all aspects of the construction of the new elevator, addition, and parking lot, including design fees, cost of fixtures, flooring, cabinets, HVAC, property acquisition, and payments to Horizon’s Stewardship (our fund-raising consultant). St. Mark’s membership authorized the Building Team to move forward with the construction projects, and also authorized incurring long term debt for the projects, based upon these cost figures. The Building Team, following standard practice for construction projects, never obtained or included estimated costs of any furnishings (e.g. tables, chairs, audio/visual equipment, appliances, art work, basketball hoop, window treatments, etc.) needed for the new addition. I do not believe the Building Team was ever charged with the responsibility of overseeing the construction and furnishing of the new addition. So the cost of “furnishings” was never presented to St. Mark’s membership by the Building Team during the capital campaign for approval, or for authorization for financing/debt. The Building Team’s plan and understanding during the past several years of the design and construction process, has been that “furnishing” the new addition would be undertaken at some point by a different team, and that fund- raising for the furnishings would be conducted separately from the “On the Corner/Building Expansion” capital campaign fund-raising to pay for the costs of construction. Regrettably, this plan and understanding was not communicated well to others until the addition was near completion. The St. Mark’s Leader Board did ultimately decide that the $19K cost of the sound absorption/acoustical panel system, as a necessary “fixture” for the addition, will be paid out of gifts and donations to the BEF. I hope that explains, at least from the Building Team’s perspective, why gifts and donations to the BEF are not being used to pay for any of the furnishings and equipment needed for the new addition. Thank you for your continued gifts and support for the addition, parking lot, and now furnishings. If you would like to

make a gift towards the new addition and parking lot, please note on your check or envelope that the donation is intended for “On the Corner” or “Building Expansion.” If you would like to make a gift towards furnishings or equipment for the new addition, please note that the donation is intended for “Addition Furnishings.” But whatever the designation for your gift, please do not donate to the building project or furnishings if doing so reduces your planned giving to the general budget for St. Mark’s ministries. Our prayer remains: “Lord, what do you want to do through me?” Our motto encourages: “not equal amounts of giving, but an equal sacrifice.” In the love of Christ, Lance Heeren, St. Mark’s Building Team member & “lame duck” Leader Board Chair

Furnishings Team Update

The Furnishings Team was formed to made decisions about what furnishings and equipment are necessary to make our beautiful new addition usable for multiple purposes. Team members are Arlene Houk (lead), Connie Byers, Mandy Sullivan and Pastor Bonnie. Existing items were inventoried to identify items that could be used. Thanks to designated gifts from generous donors, the following purchases have been made and fully paid for: $2700 of visual equipment for multi-purpose room (TV, stand, supporting equipment) Refrigerator for multi-purpose room (donated) Basketball hoop, nine-square game, balls and bean bag chairs for youth ($1700) $2500 toward tables and chairs – this will cover the majority of the cost of 10 tables like the ones in Fellowship

Hall, 80 sturdy folding chairs and storage racks. The remainder of the cost will be paid with proceeds of the October “fun raiser” dinner, Amana Oktoberfest volunteer work and general donations for furnishings that were not designated for a specific purpose.

The table and chairs should be purchased in early December and a very kind person has graciously volunteered use of a trailer to pick them up! After the final costs are known, the Furnishings Team will provide the congregation with the remaining balance of funds available to use toward needs for the space. The Furnishings Team continues to research the items below and assess priorities: Window coverings Tables and chairs for upper/lower meeting rooms Audio equipment (we are working with Aaron to identify and understand needs and wants – more information

will be shared when available) Additional tables and chairs for multi-purpose room Currently, Sunday School is successfully using a “One Room” model, which means there is no need for partitions at this time. However, we are looking into some very cost effective options for fabric dividers for Sunday School. Cost should be minimal for this and would be covered by funds available. If you feel led to designate a donation toward a specific purchase, please do so only if it won’t affect your giving toward the general budget or building project. Feel free to contact Arlene or Connie if you have any questions. Blessings, Arlene Houk [email protected] 360-3086 Connie Byers [email protected] 551-1265

St. Mark’s Finance Update

It is amazing we are already coming toward the end of another year! It is also amazing how God, through the faithfulness of His people, has continued to provide for the ministry and mission of St. Mark’s throughout the year despite significant challenges such as building construction, road construction, and difficulty accessing our building. Again this year, our staff has done a fantastic job of planning outreach and ministry activities to fit within our available financial resources. We have been able to continue fulfilling most of the financial goals the Leader Board outlined when we were developing the budget for 2018:

We are committed to supporting the work of the United Methodist denomination and its outreaches throughout the world, as well as additional local and international missions support. We committed over $67,000 from our general budget to meet our UMC apportionments and we are fulfilling this commitment.

We have the ability to maintain an excellent staff, which continues to do a fantastic job leading our congregation and the ministries at St. Mark’s.

While we have encountered many challenges due to construction that have been out of our control, we have continued to make the necessary expenditures for our building and facilities to be comfortable and well maintained.

We have been able to support many wonderful outreach opportunities such as VBS, the youth mission trip, summer youth camp scholarships, and the family retreat. We have also been able to provide help in many different ways to those in our community that are in need. Unfortunately the delay in having our parking lot completed has made it difficult so far to use our new space for increased outreach in our city and neighborhood as we had planned. This is a key goal for 2019!

At the end of September, total expense for the 2018 General Budget was $274,176 vs. total income of $277,450. October was a difficult month for our income and at the same time we had some larger expense items such as the property insurance payment. Thus, at the end of October our YTD expenses were $310,574 vs. income of $301,704. The good news is that beyond the general budget income we also received grant money to help pay for our AWE ministry staff, and undesignated gifts to our Memorial Fund helped us cover some ministry expenses such as additional camp scholarships for our youth. With these additions, we were in a good position to withstand a difficult month in October - and in fact the general fund still had a positive balance of $7827! St. Marks’ overall checking and savings account balances Oct 31st were $67,000. Besides the $7827 that can be used for general expenses, the rest of the funds are in accounts designated for specific ministries and purposes. We are keeping the building fund balance to a reduced level between $10,000 and $15,000, and using the remainder of the funds that come in to pay down our construction loan as much as we can before the capital campaign ends and the loan payments become part of the church’s general budget expenses. Though this summarizes the church finances through the end of October, we do anticipate several end-of-year expenses and expect our operating fund balance to be very tight. In November 2017 we were in a similar position, with a small positive undesignated fund balance and a tight budget. The Leader Board is confident the faithfulness of the congregation to give generously through the end of the year will allow us to finish out the year in good financial shape just like last year. Again, thank you for your continued generosity to St. Mark’s which has allowed us to continue meeting every financial obligation for the operation of our church ministries. We are excited about a great month ahead as we celebrate the birth of our Savior before heading into 2019! Lance Wilshusen St. Mark’s UMC Finance Chair
