Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord March 25, 2018

The esteemed German pastor and writer Dietrich Bonhoeffer wrote, “We must be ready to allow ourselves to be interrupted by God. We must not assume that our schedule is our own to manage, but allow it to be arranged by God…..Discipleship, after all, is not an offer that man makes to Christ.” On April 9, 1945, less than a month before the end of World War II, at Flossenbürg concentration camp, Reverend Bonhoeffer was executed. The prison doctor said of his death, “I saw Pastor Bonhoeffer kneeling on the floor, praying fervently. I was deeply moved by the way this lovable man prayed, so devout and so certain that God heard his prayer. At the place of execution he climbed the steps to the gallows, brave and composed. His death ensued after a few seconds. In the almost fifty years as a doctor, I have hardly ever seen a man die so entirely submissive to the will of God.” From where does that submission to God’s will come? How does one attain such a confidence in the face of death? For us, Holy Week provides the answer. This Great Week is our week to allow ourselves to be interrupted by the extraordinary events of Spy Wednesday, Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Sunday. More than ever, this is the week in which Christ makes to us the offer of discipleship, a discipleship that includes sacrifice and suffering, death and life, agony and glory. This is the week to offer fervent prayer, to become devout and certain, trusting in the goodness of Jesus Christ. What love is seen this week, what words of hope are proclaimed, what prayers of petition and joy are offered? I implore each of you, then, to be present each evening of the Sacred Triduum of Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday. This is God at His best. This is the Church at her finest. Don’t miss it! May God bless all of you. Father Hambrough

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

For many centuries, Christian pilgrims have longed to walk in the footsteps of Jesus, and on Passion Sunday the eyes of the world are on the Via Dolorosa, the "Road of Sorrows," in Jerusalem. As soon as it

became safe for Christians to worship in public in the fourth century, a way was marked out. It was changed a few times over the years, and

today's usual route was sketched by the Franciscans six hundred years ago, although Anglicans and Byzantines have their own unique detours.

Friday is the most favored day, although it is crowded then. Almost everyone begins at the Lion's Gate in the Muslim Quarter, and ends at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. It's less than a quarter mile, but it

threads its way through crowded markets with souvenir shops and fast-food snacks. There are, just as in your parish church, fourteen stations along the way. The exact spots are not known, but what matters is the

pilgrim's unique ability to see even an ordinary road in a teeming city as something more than meets the eye.
