ast Monday, October 7th, the Church all over the world celebrated the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary.
Established as the Feast of Our Lady of Victory in gratitude for the defeat in 1571 of the Ottoman Empire by the Christian nations at the Battle of Lepanto, the commemoration in particular asserted the role of the Rosary in the victory. Having an alliance of European nations (known as the Holy League) to confront the threat facing Christendom, Pope Pius V asked all of Europe to pray the Rosary and himself led a Rosary procession around Rome. The memorial was later named for Our Lady of the Rosary and seems to be the reason we observe October as the month of the Rosary. Many — apart from those who have a strong devotion to the Rosary — may find it difficult to identify with the origin of the feast. However, especially since September 11, 2001, given an age marked by terrorism, war, the disregard for the sanctity of life, economic uncertainty, and the awareness of trouble around the world visited in our homes every day by the news media, may I suggest this as an important time to recall the power of this prayer for the life of the every Catholic. Pope Benedict XVI, at the Basilica of Saint Mary Major on this feast day years ago said, “Today, together we confirm that the Holy Rosary is not a pious practice banished to the past, like prayers of other times thought of with nostalgia. Instead, the Rosary is experiencing a new Springtime. Without a doubt, this is one of the most eloquent signs of love that the young generation nourish for Jesus and his Mother, Mary. In the current world, so dispersive, this prayer helps to put Christ at the center, as the
Virgin did, who meditated within all that was said about her Son, and also what he did and said.” What an antidote to the busy-ness and preoccupations of a “dispersive” spirit in the world which prevents us from being mindful about the realities of our faith. The Rosary is an invitation to “choose the better part” (Luke 10:42) through meditative prayer. In presenting the mysteries of joy, light, sorrow, and glory during its recitation, we recall the salvation which alone assures us of eternal happiness and love. “The Rosary, when prayed in an authentic way, not mechanically and superficially but profoundly, brings, in fact, peace and reconciliation. It contains within itself the healing power of the Most Holy Name of Jesus….” (Pope Benedict XVI) Though simple in itself, the Rosary is admittedly not an easy prayer to recite for the unaccustomed. It requires a familiarity or comfort with quiet, concentration, and the force of will that will separate the person who prays it from the worries of the world and life (at least for a brief period). Not an escape, it gives the devotee the opportunity to hand over his or her personal needs — and those of the world! — to God through the intercession of Our Lady, and as the feast suggests, is a most powerful prayer. United to Our Lady through the Communion of the Saints, this school of Mary convinces us of our presence to God in Heaven even while here on this earth. A supply of Rosaries can be found in a basket at the entrance to the churches throughout October for those who do not have their own, or for those who might like to recommend the prayer to a friend in need.

The road to sainthood is a long one… In 2003, Mother Marianne Cope was declared “heroically Virtuous” by theologians at the Congregation for the Causes of Saints and in 2004, Pope John Paul II named her “Venerable”. In 2005, Mother Marianne was beatified, following the Vatican’s approval of the first miracle - the healing of Kate Mahoney in 1993. Kate, at the age of 14, had ovarian cancer. Following surgery for complications of chemotherapy, her major organs shut down. Invited by friends of Kate’s family, Sr. Mary Laurence Hanley, the director of the Cause of Sainthood for Mother Marianne, visited Kate at the hospital in Syrcause, prayed for Mother Marianne’s intercession, encouraged her family and friends, and the Sisters of Saint Francis at the Syracuse Motherhouse and at St. Elizabeth's Medical Center in Utica, to also ask for Mother Marianne’s intercession. She also touched a relic of Mother Marianne to Kate. Within a month, Kate’s organs had begun functioning again on their own. Kate’s complete recovery from multiple organ failure was recognized by local and Vatican doctors as a miracle!
