2017 - 2018 is THE YEAR OF THE SCHOOL
Principal Message
Dear Families,
During the month of October, we celebrate the Virtue of Gratitude.
Through this lens we consciously reflect on the unique gifts that God has
bestowed upon us. October is a time to reflect on the gift of life and all
of the positive aspects that this gift encompasses. Let us take a
deliberate pause from the rapid pace of life and remember to give
praise and thanks to our Lord. We thank Him for the gift of life, family
and friends. Please keep in your prayers families that may be in need of
God’s support and guidance during this month. For the month of
October, our school community will continue to collect donated items
for the Agincourt Community Services Association. Thank you to those
who have already donated items in support of this school initiative. We
will have a non-uniform day on Friday October 27th to celebrate the
generosity and kindness that is present in our school community.
With the support of the Me to We organization our student population
will be engaging in different initiatives this school year. We will be
developing leadership skills in our students so that they can actively
participate in servicing our local and global communities.
On Friday October 13th our student population will be making Rosary
Bracelets that will consist of one decade of the rosary. They will be
blessed by Father Michael and used by the students throughout the
school year with the Rosary Apostolates volunteers and at home with
their families. As we celebrate the Year of the School we always want
to keep Christ centered in everything that we do.
Yours truly,
Ms. S. Scott

A Thanksgiving Prayer
Heavenly Creator,
In this season of gratitude and abundance,
We give You thanks for our many blessings
As we pray for all who struggle
With hunger and want.
Be with them in the dark of night,
When all hope seems lost.
Keep their faith strong as they await relief.
And let Your goodness flow through our
Hearts and hands as we reach out to one
Another in the full, true joy
Of Thanksgiving in Christ
THANKSGIVING GATHERING:
We celebrated our first school mass on October 13th with Father Michael from our school parish, Prince of
Peace. He blessed our school community, gave thanks for our unique individual gifts and reminded us of the
importance of prayer. Father Michael will be returning to visit the students in their classroom throughout the
school year. Before mass the Rosary Apostolate volunteers assisted our student community with creating a
personal rosary bracelet that will be blessed by Father Michael before students use them to pray the rosary
for the 2017 – 2018 Year of the School.
2017 - 2018 is THE YEAR OF THE SCHOOL
STUDENT NUTRITION PROGRAM:
Our Student Nutrition Program has started the school year off strong. The
students are provided with a daily healthy snack before the morning recess
that adheres to the Canada’s Food Guide and incorporates three of the
four food groups. This non-profit initiative is subsidized at a municipal and
provincial level to ensure that all students have a healthy start to the day
so that they can focus and achieve academic success. Our program at St.
Marguerite Bourgeoys is a great success thanks to Mrs. Policarpio, our
Nutrition Program Coordinator and parent volunteers. Please contact the
school if you are interested in volunteering some time to assist with food
preparation or clean-up.
CURRICULUM NIGHT:
Thank you to the many families that came out on September 19th for our Curriculum Night and Family BBQ. It
was wonderful to see so many families gathered together with members of the St. Marguerite Bourgeoys
teaching staff in support of our Catholic education. This venue provided parents with the opportunity to learn
more about their child’s diverse programs of study, classroom expectations and the important role that
parents play in their child’s education. As partners we will work together to provide rich learning
opportunities for student development and build upon the foundational values of our Catholic faith.
ACCESS TO THE SCHOOL YARD:
The kindergarten gate will be opened before and after school for parents and students to use in order to gain
access to the larger school yard. This pathway will eliminate the need to walk around the perimeter of the
school to drop off or pick up your child. Remember that the supervision in the school yard starts at 8:30 a.m.
for students in grades 1-8 and the kindergarten supervision starts at 8:45 a.m. Please ensure that an adult is
present before dropping off your child.
SCHOOL ENTRY FOR INCLEMENT WEATHER:
On inclement weather days (i.e. excessive rain, heavy snow and extreme icy conditions) a green sign will be
placed on the front door indicating that the students will be entering the building via the front door for
supervision in the gym. If there is no green sign on the door, then the students are to walk around or use the
kindergarten gate to gain access to the school yard for outdoor supervision.
HALLOWEEN ACTIVITIES:
We will continue to have our annual Halloween costume parade on October 31st for the primary division and
Halloween related activities will be planned for this day. All ages are welcome to wear a costume! For safety
reasons any replicated weapons and mask are not to be brought to school. The distribution of any food items
from students on this day will not be allowed due to the various allergies that are present in each classroom.
Even with this limitation we will make sure that the students have lots of fun celebrating Halloween together.

Grade 5 & 6 Class – Cross Country – By Sarah:
I was excited because I was participating in the Cross Country race with my school. At the venue, before we
began the race, we sang “O Canada” and said the “Our Father” and a short prayer. The first race was for the
Grade 7 boys, and then the girls, and then the Grade 6’s, and … yeah. Karen won 1st place and a gold medal in
the Grade 6 girls race! It was incredible! Before you knew it, it was the
Grade 5 girls race! (my race!) Alfea and I were the only ones from our
school for this race. We headed for the starting line, when I realized that
I had forgotten my coat! I got really, really, nervous. All of a sudden, the
guy who started the race yelled, “Ready ladies? On your marks, get set,
go!” I ran as fast as I could. I wanted a head start! I made it to 20th in the
race. I was proud, but I could always do better! It was my first time at
Cross Country, and certainly my best experience!

Me to We - By: Mandy and Marissa
Today, the World is materialistic. Wars are imminent within developing nations and carrying capacities are
constantly exceeded within the nations. People and innocent civilian lives are endangered and imperiled by
hazardous living, conditions and scarcity of human resources that are required for survival. Did you know that
people starve and face unfair treatments from other groups? Me to We is a revolutionary movement that
revolves around making a positive change within our developing realm.
On Thursday September 28th, 2017, some of the grade 7 and 8 students from Mr. LaFace’s class of St.
Marguerite Bourgeoys Catholic School attended We Day Toronto 2017. The brothers who started this
movement, Craig and Marc Kielburger, identified the many world issues in present-day society and were
inspired to create Me to We to contribute to the social justice act throughout the world. We had an
opportunity to experience the struggles people endure in other parts of the world and the improvements they
would receive if we were to help. Being introduced to such controversies, we felt a strong realization that the
world needs help beginning with us.

Beating the Flu!
As flu season approaches, here are some things you and your children can do to stay healthy:
1. Get your flu shot through your doctor’s office or local public health flu vaccination clinics (dates and locations have been sent home)
2. Stay home when you are sick to avoid spreading the illness
3. Cover your mouth or nose with a tissue when your sneeze or cough
a. If no tissue is available, use your sleeve and not your hand
4. Wash your hands often and thoroughly a. Wash your hands before eating, after using the
bathroom, and after blowing your nose b. Wash with warm water and soap for at least 20 seconds c. Remember to wash in between the fingers, under the
nails, and around your wrists
5. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth
6. Practice other healthy habits
