ST. MARCELLINUS CITY OF COMMERCE
From Fr. Gilbert Cruz,
“I don’t regret coming here, but I certainly regret having to leave”
Para la comunidad
Regrets are something we all have. Some have to do with not taking a golden opportunity that’s being handed to us on a silver plate.
Only later, when we look back, could we kick ourselves for not jumping at the chance.
Other regrets have to do with someone’s sudden and unexpected leave taking. Only now that they are gone for good, do we look back
and regret that we had not been more kind. Our life is marked with: “if only”, If only I had been more present than absent, If only I had
been more considerate, If only I had been more complimentary rather than rude and insulting, If only I had been more respectful and
communicative. But it is too late now, and that’s what is eating us up. I remember well my second night here. I had just come back from
witnesses my first Kairos meeting on a Monday. The music was playing lively songs. People (men, women, grandmas and little children,
even teenagers and young adults) were in the aisles jumping up and down, moving from one side of the pew to other in unison.
The speakers, extremely powerful, dynamic and energetic: everyone was on fire for the Lord.
I felt so depressed, as I sat with Blackie on the back porch of the rectory and I had seriously said to my dog. Let’s move all my boxes and
belongings out of here tonite. We’ll load up the car and go, because there is no way in a million years that I could ever even think I could
match, let along come anywhere even close to ministering to people in the same way and with the same force.
Well, as it turns out, we (Blackie and I) didn’t follow through on my suggestion to leave in the middle of the night saying: “If we go, they
will never even know we were here, and that we’re gone.” But, looking back 7 years later at what a great parish St Marcellinus is; what
absolutely wonderful and talented people there are near-experts as ministers, many of whom are much better than many of those who
have been ordained or professed and who have been serving for years; these professionals don’t come anywhere near the quality of
service, care, dedication, and, expertise that you ministers put out. You really don’t need “a” priest, as you are all capable of service on
your own. You have taught, this priest anyway, more that a thing or two. I look at
the way you carry out your ministries and I am in awe, and, so impressed. But more
than professionals, you individually and collectively are such warm, welcoming, and
loving people. My family says that all the time. People love coming here because of
the sense of family and community you work so hard to foster. That’s something
you can’t fake! So, if I really had “stolen away” in the middle of the night, knowing
what I do know now, I would be living with what undoubtedly would have been the
biggest regret of my entire life. My only guess is that God put the brakes on that
idea and prevented me from leaving. And for that I am not only grateful, but feel like
the luckiest and most blest person in Commerce; maybe even in the world, thanks
to all of you, your love, and generosity, support, and the love you have for one an-
other, for our Divine Lord, and for your example of always wanting to spread the
good news – and only when necessary – using words. Or as the Gospel song says:
I am just a nobody, trying to tell everybody, about somebody who can save any-
body.
