It’s Regatta season again! On behalf of the Sint Maarten Yacht Club I would like to welcome each one of you to share and enjoy regatta fever with us.

With our new regatta director Michele Korteweg at the helm, the Regatta Organization has done everything in its power to accommodate you both on and off the water. We are thoroughly committed to offering you challenging courses and smooth sailing. The Sint Maarten Yacht Club will be the main head quarters for the 2013 regatta registration. Our club can be accessed by both tender and car, so we look forward to seeing you there during the regatta.

Tuesday February 26th Budget Marine Match Racing Cup from 10:00 - 16:00. Prize giving for Budget Marine Match Racing at 18:00.

Wednesday, February 27th

For all participants registration will be open on Wednesday February 27th and Thursday February 28th from 11:00 to 17:00.

An additional registration will be available to those participants entered in the Gill Commodore’s Cup only. This will take place Wednesday February 27th from 17:00 to 19:00.

Gill Commodore’s Cup participants who also entered the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta will be able to complete both registrations at this time. The Welcome Back Sailors Party at the Sint Maarten Yacht Club starts at 19:00.

Thursday, February 28th

Registration for all classes will be open from 11:00 to 17:00 at the Sint Maarten Yacht Club in Simpson Bay

Gill Commodore’s Cup takes place. Welcome Party at Port de Plaisance. Prize Giving for the Gill Commodore’s Cup at 19:30 at Port de Plaisance.

Friday, March 1st The first race starts outside of Simpson Bay. The Race Around the Island for most classes from Simpson Bay to Great Bay. Party on the Boardwalk in Great Bay, Philipsburg.

Saturday, March 2nd

Most classes race from Simpson Bay to Marigot. Party on the Waterfront in Marigot.

Sunday, March 3rd The final day with a race from Marigot to Simpson Bay. Prize Giving Ceremony and Final party in Simpson Bay on Kim Sha Beach.

The St. Maarten Heineken Regatta has become the largest and most anticipating sailing competition in the Caribbean and the most renowned in the world due to the combination of world class sailing during the day and fabulous parties at night. Provisional Notice of Race St. Maarten Heineken Regatta and Gill Commodore’s Cup 2013

The Sint Maarten Yacht Club Regatta Foundation takes pleasure in inviting you to compete in two separate events: The 33rd edition of the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta, March 1 to 3, 2013 and the Gill Commodore’s Cup, February 28th, 2013. The Organizing Authority is the Sint Maarten Yacht Club Regatta Foundation. The Regatta Headquarters is at the Sint Maarten Yacht Club situated next to the Simpson Bay Bridge.

1 RULES1.1 The regattas will be governed by the rules as defined in The Racing Rules of Sailing 2013-2016 (www.sailing.org).1.2 The Caribbean Sailing Association (CSA) Rating Rule (www.caribbean-sailing.com) and the St. Maarten Multihull Handicap rating rule shall apply. 1.3 For Multihulls only, the CSA Minimum Safety Requirement # 2 (lifelines) shall not apply.1.4 Racing Rule 77 shall not apply (identification on sails). See 5.1.5 For all classes Racing Rule 44.1 is changed so that the Two-Turns Penalty is replaced by the One- Turn Penalty.1.6 For all classes no score will be excluded. This changes Racing Rule Appendix A point 2. See 11.1.7 The Sailing Instructions may also change other rules.

2 ADVERTISING2.1 Boats may be required to display advertising chosen and supplied by the Organizing Authority.

3 ELIGIBILITY AND ENTRY3.1 The St. Maarten Heineken Regatta is open to the following classes that may be subdivided, and rated as follows: CSA Monohull CSA Rating Rule. See 16.1 Bareboat CSA Bareboat Rating Rule. See 16.2 Lottery Class Arbitrary rating. See 16.3 Multihull St. Maarten Multihull Handicap System. See 16.4

3.2 The Gill Commodore’s Cup is open only to CSA Monohull boats using a spinnaker rating.3.3 Boats may enter by the online entry system or by sending their entry form to the Sint Maarten Yacht Club by E-mail no later than February 22nd 2013.3.4 If late entries are accepted by the Race Committee, a US$ 100.00 surcharge will be added to the entry fee. 4 FEES4.1 Entry fees are as follows:4.1.1 St. Maarten Heineken Regatta: CSA Yacht Club Member US$ 7.00 Per Foot Non-CSA Yacht Club Member US$ 8.00 Per Foot Lottery Class (Only) US$ 4.00 Per Foot4.1.2 Gill Commodore’s Cup: US$ 65.00 Flat Fee

4.2 The entry fees shall be paid no later than at registration. The fees are payable in Cash, St. Maarten Cheque, Travellers Cheque, Visa or Master Card.4.3 The entry fee includes a free water taxi pass for all racing crew members, valid from Thursday, February 28th until Sunday March 3rd 2013.

5 BOAT IDENTIFICATION5.1 All boats are required to register their sail numbers for use in identifying their boat.5.2 Bareboats, or any other entrants without sail numbers, shall carry bow and stern numbers for the purpose of identification. A cash deposit of US$/Euro 100.00 is charged at registration for a set of bow/stern numbers. On Sunday, March 3rd, after racing, bow/stern numbers must be returned and your deposit will be refunded. The final date to return bow/stern numbers is June 1st, 2013. Any numbers returned after this date will not have their deposit refunded.

6 SCHEDULE6.1 Registration for the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta and the Gill Commodore’s Cup will be open on both Wednesday February 27th and Thursday February 28th, 2013, from 11:00 to 17:00.6.2 Registration will remain open on Wednesday February 27th from 17:00 to 19:00 solely for those participants entered in the Gill Commodore’s Cup. Any Gill Commodore’s Cup participants who are also entered for the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta will be able to complete both registrations during this time.6.3 Name changes to any boat may not be accepted by the Race Committee after February 20th 2013. If name changes are accepted after this date there shall be an administrative fee of US$ 100.00

6.4 Dates of racing: St. Maarten Heineken Regatta: Friday March 1st, Saturday March 2nd and Sunday March 3rd, 2013. Gill Commodore’s Cup: Thursday February 28th, 2013.6.5 The warning signal for the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta will not be before 09:55.6.6 The warning signal for the Gill Commodore’s Cup will not be before 11:25. The bridge openings will be taken into consideration by the Race Officer.

7 RATING7.1 Each entry in the Monohull class shall have a valid 2013 CSA digitally certified rating certificate. See 16.17.2 Each entry in the Bareboat class shall have a valid 2013 CSA Bareboat digitally certified rating certificate. See 16.27.3 Each entry in the Lottery class will be given an arbitrary rating at Registration. See 16.37.4 Each entry in the Multihull class shall have a completed Multihull rating form. See 16.4

8 SAILING INSTRUCTIONS8.1 The Sailing Instructions will be available at Registration and may be available online at the Regatta website (www.heinekenregatta.com) before registration. 9 THE COURSES9.1 On Friday March 1st, Saturday March 2nd and Sunday March 3rd 2013, race courses will be on the waters around the island of St. Maarten / Saint Martin, and may include any or all of the following races: - Around the Island - Around Buoys - Point to Point9.2 There will be different length courses for the different classes. Subdivided classes may sail different length courses within the classes. Course details will be available at Registration, and may be available online at the Regatta website (www.heinekenregatta.com) before registration.9.3 The Race Courses for the Gill Commodore’s Cup on Thursday February 28th, 2013 will be Around the Buoys racing.

10 PENALTY SYSTEM10.1 Decisions of the Jury will be final as provided in Racing Rule 70.5.10.2 Except for infringements of Part 2 of the Racing Rules of Sailing the Jury may, at its discretion, impose any penalty it deems equitable.

11 SCORING11.1 For both the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta and the Gill Commodore’s Cup, one race is required to be completed to constitute a series11.2 For all classes no score will be excluded. This changes Racing Rule Appendix A point 2.11.3 The scores of the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta and the Gill Commodore’s Cup will be scored as separate events and will not be combined. 12 RADIO COMMUNICATION12.1 Except in an emergency, a boat shall neither make radio transmissions while racing nor receive radio communications not available to all boats. This restriction also applies to mobile telephones, etc.

13 PRIZES13.1 Prizes will be given as follows for the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta: • The St. Maarten / Saint Martin Cup will be awarded for the Most Worthy Performance of the Regatta (as determined by the Race Committee at their sole discretion). • The Columbus Cup – Overall winner in the Bareboat class. • 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in each class, except for Lottery class. • 1st Prize each day in Lottery class. • Trophies will be awarded to the Spinnaker, Non Spinnaker, Bareboat and Multihull boats with the fastest elapsed time in the Around the Island race. • A Most Worthy Performance for each day may be awarded, at the sole discretion of the Race Committee.13.2 Prizes will be given as follows for the Gill Commodore’s Cup: • 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in each class.

14 DISCLAIMER OF LIABILITY14.1 Competitors participate in the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta and/or the Gill Commodore’s Cup entirely at their own risk. See Racing Rule 4, Decision to Race. The Organizing Authority and its affiliates, will not accept any liability for material damage or personal injury or death sustained in conjunction with or prior to, during, or after the regatta.

15 PHOTOGRAPHIC AND MEDIA RIGHTS15.1 Competitors grant the Organizing Authority the unrestricted right and permission to use the name and/or image for any text, photograph or video footage of either themselves or the boat they are sailing during the event to be published or broadcast in any media whatsoever (including but not limited to press and TV advertisements or internet), for either editorial or advertising purposes or to be used in press information; in this respect, competitors’ names and any biographical material of themselves may also be used or reproduced in any way known.

16.2 Bareboats The Race Committee is dedicated to ensuring an equal and fair opportunity for all competitors in the bareboat class. Boats of this class will be restricted to recognized bareboat fleets acceptable to the Race Committee. Only equipment provided as standard by the bareboat company will be allowed. No spinnakers, spinnaker poles, whisker poles, second headsails or adjustable backstays will be permitted. It is also prohibited to use any supplied equipment for a purpose other than that intended. However bimini’s may be moved or removed. No part of the anchor shall overhang the ends of the boat while racing (CSA Safety Rule point 5). If the anchor is removed from the bow it shall be stored in the anchor locker. Folding props are allowed.

This class is open only to crews and skippers who have no previous affiliation, familiarity or financial interest with the vessel being sailed, the sails and/or the standard equipment. It is not allowed to arrange with the charter company to have any equipment installed that might give any real or perceived advantage.

The boats from the bareboat companies shall be allocated to the entrant on a purely random basis. If, by some statistical anomaly, an entrant is allocated the same boat for two years in a row, the bare boat charter company shall give written notification to the Race Committee to inform them of the situation and to seek approval for the allocation. 16.3 Lottery Class This class is intended for live-aboard / heavy cruising boats and for those participants who just want to enjoy the fun side of the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta. The courses for this class will be short and easy. The Race Committee reserves the right to refuse any boat that it feels is not suitable for the spirit of this class. An arbitrary rating will be given at registration. Each boat’s rating may be modified each day according to its performance the previous day.

16.4 Multihulls For all multihulls, the length, weight, sail area, and a few other measurements have to be accurately assessed. If this information is available from an independent source such as a manufacturers website, this may be used. If no independent information is available, please contact the Regatta Office for an appointment to weigh and measure the boat. There will be a charge, separate from the entry fee for this service.

February 28th 2013 will once again give the participants of the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta a great day of warm up racing for those flying spinnakers. This pre-event, which is sponsored by Gill, has become a staple of the regatta weekend and makes for a challenging day of sailing.

Participants that enter this event won’t be disappointed, as windward-leeward courses give them lots of great racing and a chance to size up the competition for the coming weekend of racing. Boats can enter this one day event online while entering for the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta, and collect all event paperwork at registration, making it easy to enter two events at one time.

Provisional Sailing Instructions St. Maarten Heineken Regatta1. Rules1.1 The regatta will be governed by the rules as defined in The Racing Rules of Sailing 2013-2016 (www.sailing.org).1.2 In the event of conflict, the English text of the rules and these Sailing Instructions as printed and distributed at registration shall apply, any versions posted on the regatta website are purely informational. 2. Notices to Competitors2.1 Notices to competitors will be posted on the Official Notice Board located at the Sint Maarten Yacht Club, Simpson Bay. As a courtesy to competitors, the notices may also be displayed on the score screens at each venue.

3. Changes to the Sailing Instructions3.1 Any change to the Sailing Instructions will be posted by 7:30 on the day it will take effect, except that any change to the schedule will be posted by 21:00 on the day before it will take effect. 4. Signals Ashore4.1 There will be no signals ashore.

5. Schedule of Races5.1 The schedule of races and starting times for all classes will be issued at registration and will form part of these Sailing Instructions. 6. Class Flags and Identification6.1 A list of class flags and the appropriate colored flag will be issued to each boat at registration.6.2 Class flags shall be flown from the backstay or, if not possible, from a suitable appendage at the stern of the boat where it shall be clearly visible.6.3 Identification ‘tie-on’ guardrail bow and stern numbers will be provided, if needed, at registration and shall be clearly displayed on both sides of the forward and aft lifelines of the boat. Entrants that have sail numbers must provide them to the registration office and will not be required to have bow/ stern numbers.

7. Courses7.1 Addendum A to these Sailing Instructions lists the marks to be passed, their order and the side on which each mark is to be left. The diagrams show the courses. 7.2 The number of the course to be sailed will be indicated by a numeral pennant flown from the Start Boat.7.3 While racing, all boats shall stay to seaward of all marks and buoys that are part of the fueling station in Cole Bay and their imaginary connecting lines. 7.4 While racing, all boats shall stay to seaward of all marks and buoys that mark the extension of the runway at Juliana airport in Maho Bay and their imaginary connecting lines.

8. Marks8.1 Marks of the course will be orange or yellow inflatable buoys, some of which may display advertising. If a mark goes missing it might be replaced by a small round red buoy.8.2 Marks on the French side of the island might be permanent yellow Nature Reserve bouys.

9. The Start 9.1 Races will be started in accordance with RRS Rule 26. The warning signal for Start Boat A and Start Boat B will be Five (5) minutes before the starting signal.9.2 The warning signal of each succeeding class shall be made with or after the starting signal of the preceding class.9.3 The starting line will be between an orange flag on the Start Boat and an orange inflatable buoy on port. 9.4 Any boat or buoy attached to the Start Boat shall be considered to be part of the Start Boat. 9.5 Boats whose warning signal has not been made shall avoid the starting area during the starting sequence for other races. A breach of this instruction may be protested by the Race Committee only. This changes RRS Rule 60.1 (a).9.6 (a) Starts will be to windward. If the first mark of the course is not to windward, an additional windward / offset mark combination will be added to the course.9.6 (b) All windward marks will be orange and all offset marks will be yellow.9.6 (c) The additional windward mark will be between ¾ and 1 ¼ nautical miles from the start. The offset mark will be at approximately 90 degrees to the straight line from the start to the windward mark at a distance of 1 nautical mile or less.9.7 (a) If the Start Boat displays a green-over-red flag combination; proceed directly to the first mark of the course.9.7 (b) If the Start Boat displays a red flag; round the additional windward / offset marks to port.9.7 (c) If the Start Boat displays a green flag; round the additional windward / offset marks to starboard.

9.8 After completing the first leg of the course, a boat shall not cross any starting line. After completing the first leg of the course a boat shall not cross the finishing line until she is completing the last leg of the course and finished. A restricted start or finish line shall be considered an obstruction. The start line of the other Start Boat is always an obstruction. A boat that breaks these rules shall not correct her error. However, she will be exonerated if she takes a one-turn penalty.9.9 Prior to their warning signal, boats of the Bareboat Class shall not have any part of the headsail hoisted or unfurled when they are within 400 meters (1/4 mile) of the starting line. A breach of this instruction may be protested by the Race Committee only. This changes RRS Rule 60.1 (a).9.10 A boat starting later than 10 minutes after the last starting signal in the starting sequence will be scored Did Not Start (DNS) without a hearing. This changes RRS Rule A4 and A5.

10. General Recall10.1 In the event of a general recall, starts for succeeding classes will be postponed accordingly.

11. The Finish11.1 The finishing line will be between a blue flag on a Finish Boat and a nearby orange inflatable buoy.

12. Time Limit12.1 The time limit for all classes will be 18:00, except that on Sunday, March 3, the time limit will be 16:00.12.2 If there is more than one race for a class in a day, the time limit for the first race will be one hour after the finish time of the first finisher in that class.12.3 Boats failing to finish by the time limit will be scored Did Not Finish (DNF) without a hearing. This changes RRS Rules 35, A4 and A5.

13. Penalty System 13.1 Except for breaches of Parts 1 and 2 of the RRS, the International Jury may apply any penalty that they deem equitable. This changes RRS rule 64.1.13.2 A boat that does not take a penalty in accordance with RRS 44.1 and 44.2 may accept a 30% scoring penalty before the protest hearing provided there was no damage and the boat did not gain a significant advantage. This changes RRS 44. RRS 44.3 does not apply.

14. Protests14.1 Protest forms are available with the protest secretary at the official protest desk.14.2 For each competitor the protest time limit is two (2) hours after the protesting boat finish time of the last race of the day for that boat or 18:30, whichever is earlier. Competitors shall make every reasonable effort to comply with the protest time limit. Bridge opening times and the return of boats to moorings do not automatically extend protest time.14.3 On Sunday, March 3, protests shall be lodged by 16:30 or within two (2) hours after the protesting boat finish time, whichever is earlier.14.4 On the last day of racing a request for reopening a hearing shall be delivered:a. Within the protest time limit if the requesting party was informed of the decision on the previous day.b. No later than 30 minutes after the requesting party was informed of the decision of that day. This changes rule 66. 14.5 Protests will be heard in approximately the order of receipt, starting as soon as possible. Protest hearings will be notified by a listing on the Official Notice Board. This list will be updated at approximately 30-minute intervals from the receipt of the first protest each day until the list has been marked “Final for the Day”. When all parties are present at the Protest Desk, every reasonable effort will be made to hold the hearing as soon as possible, even if it is prior to the posted hearing time.14.6 A system of Arbitration may be used prior to full Jury hearings for matters concerning breaches of RRS Part 2. After Arbitration and before the Jury hearing, any party to the Arbitration may accept a 40% scoring penalty. Rules for Arbitration will be available at the Protest Desk.14.7 When the official measurer of the regatta is satisfied that there is an error in a boat’s measurement certificate at any time during the regatta, he will notify the Jury which will call a hearing. If the Jury is satisfied that the measurement certificate is in error, the measurer will reissue the certificate and the score for all races in the regatta will be adjusted in accordance with the new measurement certificate. This changes RRS rule 78.3.14.8 Other than as allowed in 14.7 above, no measurement or rating protest may be lodged after the first day of racing. This changes RRS rule 60.1(a). 14.9 When the Jury sits with a panel of less than 5 members, in accordance with Appendix N 1.4(b) the time limit for the parties to request a full IJ hearing shall be 30 minutes from the time the initial decision is announced.

15. Scoring15.1 Application of handicaps will be made on a time-on-time system.15.2 When fewer than 75% of the starters in a class finish within the time limit, positions for boats that have not finished may be taken at the last mark at which a rounding was recorded by the Race Committee. A boat so recorded shall not be scored better than or equal to one completing the course.

16. Safety16.1 All boats shall comply with CSA minimum safety requirements except that Multihulls are exempt from the lifeline requirement.16.2 No boat shall race with an anchor overhanging the bow or forward crossbeam. However written application for exemption from this requirement may be made to the Chairman of the Race Committee, who may grant any relief he deems appropriate.16.3 Any boat retiring shall advise the Start Boat or Finish Boat at the earliest opportunity. Failure to do so may, following a hearing, result in disqualification from the regatta or such other penalty as the Jury deems equitable.

17. Equipment and Measurement Checks17.1 A boat or equipment may be inspected at any time for compliance with the CSA measurement rules, CSA safety requirements, these Sailing Instructions, and the Notice of Race.

18. Official Boats18.1 Official boats will be marked with a RC flag.

19. Trash Disposal19.1 Trash shall not deliberately be thrown overboard.

20. Radio Communication20.1 Radio communication for Start Boat A will be VHF channel 71. Radio communication for Start Boat B will be VHF channel 74.20.2 The Start Boat/ Finish Boat may broadcast the following: - Time checks 30 and 15 minutes before the first start each day; - Courses to be sailed; - Notification of amendments to the Sailing Instructions and, if the amendment is brief, its text; - The Abandonment or Postponement of any race; - The Finish Boat leaving the finish line.20.3 Failure to make these broadcasts will not be grounds for redress.

21. Use of engines21.1 Any boat that uses her engine during a race shall submit a written report of the incident, including the time and distance covered and the reasons for using the engine, to the jury within the protest time. The jury may, following a hearing take any action it deems appropriate.

In order to ensure that all participants are ferried to and from their boats in a timely and comfortable fashion, the Sint Maarten Yacht Club invested in boats over the last few years in order to further improve the service this year.

The Water Taxi Pass for each crewmember racing in the Regatta is included in the entry fee and is valid for unlimited use during the official opening hours, which are:

Thursday, February 28th: 16:00 - 01:00 in Simpson Bay/Port de PlaisanceFriday March 1st: 07:00 - 09:30 and 14:00 - 01:00 in Simpson BaySaturday March 2nd: 07:00 - 09:30 in Simpson Bay and 14:00 - 01:00 in MarigotSunday March 3rd: 07:00 - 09:30 in Marigot and 14:00 - 01:00 in Simpson Bay *There will be a limited water taxi service in the lagoon, only between participating boats and the Sint Maarten Yacht Club on the days that the water taxi service is located in Simpson Bay.

Simply hoist the Blue & Orange Sol flag during the day or use the glow stick during evening hours (provided by us at registration) when you want to go ashore and one of our comfortable Water Taxi dinghies will come and pick you up.

Three zones, named A, B and C, have been defined for anchorage. The Sol Water Taxi Service will only operate between these zones and a dedicated dock. You will find the area your boat has been assigned to in the last minute information handed out at registration.

When it is time to board your boat, especially early in the morning when you are in a rush and bringing in the supplies for the day such as lunch, water and of course the most important of them all, sun tan lotion, go to the Sol Water Taxi Service Dock.

It is important for you to remember in which zone you are anchored. Remembering other characteristics like the name of your boat, your bow number, etc. will be of great help to the drivers to locate your boat.

The people in the Orange Sol Shirts will do their utmost to take you to and from your boat, before and after a great day’s racing and partying.

At rush hour, please stay calm and have confidence in your water taxi drivers. Please realize that they are not allowed to have the Heinekens you had. They do their best to get you ashore or to your yacht.

After official opening hours at night and on Monday morning the 4th of March, a limited number of water taxis may run as part of a private enterprise. The cost thereof is not included in the Water Taxi Pass. The Regatta Organization does not accept any responsibility for any form of water taxi service rendered outside the scheduled times as mentioned above.

Budget Marine Match Racing Cup

For the 5th year in a row the Budget Marine Match Racing Cup will take place inside the Simpson Bay Lagoon and will offer spectators an amazingly close view of the world’s best Match Racers in action. Competitors are going to go head to head in this one day event and are competing for the US$ 8,000 prize money.

This invitation only event has had the likes of Gavin Brady, Bouwe Bekking, Peter Holmberg and Colin Rathbun and will once again put the skills of the world experienced Match Racers to the test. All teams consist of three persons. If you would like to be considered as a participant for this event please send an email to regatta@heinekenregatta.com and your request will be sent to the race committee.

For spectators, there will be live commentary from the Yacht Club and it will offer some great insights to the world of Match Racing.

Why does the media rib always float in exactly the spot you would want to be to round the upwind mark? Or why does a cameraman float in the water near that mark? It’s because the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta is not only a sailor’s paradise, but also that of Media.

A whole range of different media has been covering the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta in the past 33 years. It has its ‘in-house’ media team, international media is officially invited and all other media accredits themselves because it’s THE event to cover.

The ‘in-house’ media team consists of a group of men and women who have a long history at the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta. The press writer is Herb McCormick, an enthusiastic racing sailor and award-winning journalist. Herb has been the press writer for 20 years, missing only one year when he was sailing around the world. Then there is (barking) Bob Grieser, our famous main photographer. Last year Bob published his book “25 years St. Maarten Heineken Regatta” His beautiful pictures are published worldwide.

And then there is the film crew, On Air Media led by Anton van de Koppel, who knows all the ins and outs of the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta. Anton has been covering the event for 24 years. He ensures that there are always two camera teams, both on the water and at the party venues. This very passionate team is known for the promo videos, information pieces, daily wrap ups and worldwide broadcasts (KLM inflight, CNN Mainsail, ESPN, Nautical Channel, etc). In the past 24 years they have accumulated around 1.000 hours of footage!

ESPN has become part of our ‘media family’ as well. 2011’s event was the beginning of this collaborative effort and the result was a fantastic 30 minute program that aired on various ESPN channels in the Caribbean, Australia, New Zealand, the Middle East, Israel and Africa, offering insight to this one of a kind event. ESPN’s television special in 2011 also marked the first time that the sports media grouphad aired a sailing event originating in the Caribbean. A 5 year contract is in place and the organization is looking forward to a great collaboration for the 2013 event.

Besides this ‘regular’ group, every year a group of international journalists of various compositions, represent (sailing) magazines from all over the world. They go on press boats to follow the race, the organization tries to secure spots on racing boats to make it possible for them to write passionate stories directly from where the action is and they tour the island to complete the overall impression of the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta.

Then there is the largest media group: the writers, photographers and film crews who accredit for the event and come to St. Maarten themselves to cover this unique event. They mainly represent the region, but several come from the USA and Europe. For these media there are also press boats available. Each morning the media reports at the Sint Maarten Yacht Club to be assigned to the various boats and to receive the latest information.

The regatta is not only covered by sailing media, but journalists from lifestyle magazines and tourist desti-nation magazines come to cover the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta as it’s an event that offers something for everyone.

Youth SailingYouth Sailing at the St Maarten Yacht Club (SMYC)

Youth Sailing Program thanks Regatta Sailors for donations

Sunshine, turquoise warm water, tradewinds. Who has not dreamt of learning to sail in a place like St. Maarten. Here is your chance to give local kids the opportunity to do exactly that!

The Sint Maarten Yacht Club Youth Sailing Program is very proud to say that we have almost 70 children out on the water every week.

Four children, of the total of 70, would not be sailing without the help of the Heineken regatta donations we were pleased to receive last year.

Students in the youth sailing program sail in three different types of boats; Optimist for ages 7,5-12 Lasers for ages 12-18 and RS Vision for ages 12-18. Lessons are available 6 days a week with a total of 12 sessions.

On Saturday afternoons the youngsters often participate in races and other sailing activities (full moon sail, sailing at sea, lagoon trips etc.). These events, organized by the Youth Sailing Committee, keep it fun and keep the kids motivated to improve their skills.

We currently have 14 local kids in the program, which we are very proud of. It is the Sint Maarten Yacht Club’s goal to attract even more locals to this amazing sport.Here is a big thanks to the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta Organization for collecting funds and to the Regatta Sailors for donating every year.

Sharing the joys of sun, sea and sailing

I am incredibly lucky to live on an island that hosts the world’s most famous warm-water sailing event. As a journalist, writer and broadcaster, I cut my teeth on the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta. For many years I have pointed a microphone and camera at this sailing extravaganza and watched it evolve into the splendid regatta it is today.

On the press boat, with its many world-class yachting journalists, you see the regatta from a whole different perspective. First and foremost, there’s the never-ending commentary: knowledgeable, often funny, always ribald and totally unfit for broadcast! That said; it’s through the press boat that the regatta shares the sailing and shore-side excitement with the rest of the world.

No one gets amongst the action like the guys on the press boats, where being shouted at and called rude names by the sailors is all part of the job.

What many observers don’t know is that the media has built up a huge archive of past regatta action; a comprehensive record of how the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta and the island has evolved. And evolved it has, at a tremendous pace.

What is it that makes the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta a ‘must do’ for more and more of the world’s top sailors? Well, we are one of the Caribbean’s most beautiful islands where a vibrant mix of Dutch and French creates a unique ambiance. Then there’s our notable cuisine, everything from fine wining and dining to mouthwatering local dishes, prepared and enjoyed al fresco. We host the best regatta parties in the Caribbean and Heineken brings in the top acts to rock the beaches and bays. Night clubs, bars, and casinos are set against a backdrop of beautiful scenery—everything is world class yet all pales in compari-son to the main attraction, the big one: THE SAILING.

Drenched by the tropical sun and kissed by the warm trade winds, St. Maarten offers the best sailing condi-tions in the world to an increasingly broad spectrum of boats. Class diversification and a progressive rat-ing system have opened the regatta to everyone: Out-and-out racers with professional crews, one-design fleets, charter boats, multihulls cruise-racers and cruisers.

The Budget Marine Match Race sailed close to shore in the Simpson Bay Lagoon attracts the best match racers in the world. The highly-competitive Gill Commodore’s Cup for spinnaker-class boats is hard-fought and gives the crews a chance to warm up, check the gear and prepare for the main event—the three-day St. Maarten Heineken Regatta.

Being a member of the press affords me certain privileges; for instance, I have access to people who run the massive regatta machine. I see what goes on in the back rooms, the office-come-shipping-containers. I get to know the personalities behind the sponsorship, the teams that work through the night to move the massive operation from one venue to the next, and I meet the volunteers without whom the regatta wouldn’t exist. This is the unseen face of the regatta, the human interest story that goes beyond the sailing, and one that I never grow tired of telling.

Best of all I get up close with sailors from all over the world who come to the regatta to race, to fulfill an ambition, to live the dream and yes, to party with their toes in the sand. For one glorious week of yachting, I’m privileged to share their stories, their excitement and their lives.

This is the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta. Enjoy the sailing, explore the island, have fun and don’t forget to smile for the press boat.
