Refugee Action Sunday Last Sunday we celebrated Refugee Action Sunday, with a
luncheon. A day when we engage the general public around
issues that asylum seekers and refugees face in Australia and
its offshore detention centres.
The Uniting Church has a Justice and International Mission
unit that strongly advocates on local, National and
International issues. In particular this unit has a very strong
focus on Justice for Refugees and Asylum Seekers.
We at St Luke’s are charged with the responsibility of
providing a welcome and safe place at church, and as
Disciples of Christ we do not question our response as we
provide care and comfort for refugees and asylum seekers
who come to Australia seeking safety, friendship, work and a
safe home for family.
At the luncheon we enjoyed tasting food that refugees from
Sudan, Iran, and Iraq especially prepared together with
Joyce McRobbie’s delicious rice and Indian food prepared by
Alison Lyons.
Thank you to Khatoon Alkhawri, Azi Safarnejad, Sahar
Roshadel, Lena Ajak and Terzai Amayliek for preparing food
and helping St Luke’s continue on it’s mission of outreach to
people in need.

PRAYER POINTS FOR THIS WEEK COMMENCING October 15th
• Give thanks for God’s ever-present love and forgiveness, and the gift of
grace he bestows on each one through Jesus Christ.
• Give thanks for the beauty of nature that surrounds us.
• Give thanks for the freedom in which we live, and for opportunities to share
our faith without fear of persecution.
• Pray for people in countries where they are persecuted for living out their
faith. Pray for minority groups who are treated unjustly and who live in
fear. Pray for those who find it necessary to seek refuge in other countries,
and that they may be resettled in safety and with dignity.
• Pray for peace in the world and especially for world leaders as they
negotiate peaceful solutions. Pray that nuclear warfare can be averted.
• Pray for those who have lost loved ones, homes, possessions, in the
California fires, and other catastrophic disasters around the world.
• Pray for our own country and its governing bodies, both national and state
political leaders, Pray also for the upcoming City of Greater Geelong
Council elections.
• Give thanks that the Rev. Paul Stephens has accepted the call to be the
minister at St. Luke’s.
• Continue to pray for Uniting Barwon (previously named Uniting Care
Geelong), as it ministers to needy families in this area. Pray for the clients,
volunteers, staff and board.
• Pray for all those who are sick, frail, facing or recovering from surgery, those
who are grieving the loss of a loved one, those who are anxious about the
future or who are suffering from depression. Pray for those who are
unemployed.
• Pray for young people who have lost their way and are making bad
decisions. Pray that they may be influenced in positive ways by good role
models to find direction in their lives. Give thanks that Jesus lovingly offers
a better way.

The contemplative Prayer Corner can be found in the north-west corner of the
church and is a quiet space set aside for personal reflection and meditation
during and following the worship service or at any time during the week when
the church is open.
This area contains tapers to light, meditation books, slips of paper on which to
write a prayer request which can then be rolled up and placed in one of the
slots in the wooden cross, plus Prayer request cards that can be placed in the
Prayer Box on the table. There are take-home reflection sheets and other aids
for private contemplative prayer.
You may like to go into the garden and pick some flowers and place them on
the prayer table with your written prayer.
If you would like someone to share with you during this time, please speak to
Beth, Pam or Lloyd following the service.
