Last Thursday, we were treated to a wonderful performance of The Magic Flute presented by Opera Australia in conjunction with PIE Productions which the children thoroughly enjoyed and were mesmerised by. RELIGIOUS EDUCATION AND PASTORAL CARE

Mother’s DayWe hope that all our mothers and grandmothers enjoyed a special day on Sunday with their families! Thank you once again to Zephyr class and staff for preparing a lovely Mother’s Day liturgy, and to Mrs Genford and Mrs Ledlin for assisting in the facilitation of it. Also a big thank you to all the classes for

their beautiful poster creations celebrating the gifts of our mums!Thank you also to Kylie Grey, Ashley Ball and their wonderful band of merry helpers who assisted in either packaging up the Mother’s Day gifts, or running the Mother’s Day Stall.Your generosity and time is greatly appreciated!

‘Year of Youth’2018, has been identified by the Australian Bishops as the national Year of Youth. Within the Broken Bay Diocese, part of this focus includes the Diocesan ‘Year of Youth’ Pilgrim Cross which is travelling through each of the Broken Bay parishes. This week it came to Wahroonga and so, on Wednesday, a group of our students visited Holy Name Church to view this special Cross. As you are well aware, many of our students and their families don’t always have

an opportunity to venture freely inside a Church, and so they were very excited and fascinated to be in such a special place exploring all areas of it! Once the excitement calmed down a little, the students who were all curious took much delight in looking at the Cross. Pablo remarked “I can see where Jesus’ crown is on the Cross” and then spontaneously yelled out “I love you Jesus!” It was a special moment indeed!

OASIS Meals TeamA huge thank you to the wonderful parents who assist Michaela Townsend in keeping our freezer well stocked with meals for emergency/pastoral needs within our community. It is greatly appreciated!

SAVE THE DATEOur next St Lucy’s Family Mass will be held on Friday 22nd June at 6.30pm here at school. All families are invited, especially our Stage One and Stage Three families as these classes will be hosting our Mass.

Wishing you peace and blessings!Vanessa Dillon.

CREATIVE ARTS NEWS

Mother’s Day Mini Art FestSt Lucy’s satellite classes: Supernova, Meteor and Tornado, came to visit Wahroonga campus last week to participate in a mini art festival designed by our wonderful Art Teacher, Marci Ordonez. Students had the opportunity to experience the full joy of Art in a very kinesthetic set up without having to worry about being messy! Students engaged in a variety of artistic mark making using: water pistols to squirt paint at huge hanging sheets, paint on large canvases, cardboard box structure, bubbles on paint to create swirly effects and much more.

Marci and the students were assisted on the day by corporate volunteers from GlaxoSmithKline. We are grateful to them for their enthusiasm and joy in helping us run this special day.

ART PROJECT places availableWe have 3-4 places available in our Thursday afternoon Art Project group. Art Project starts in Week 2 each term and runs every Thursday afternoon from 3pm-4.30pm. Marci Ordonez runs these art sessions each week.If you are interested in finding out more, please contact Lucy Egger at [email protected]

A big THANK YOU to St Ives Shopping Village who recently hosted the Elisa and Martin Manrique Exhibition. They have been wonderful in regularly exhibiting the art work of St Lucy’s students in their gallery, as well as school students from all around the local area. St Ives Shopping Village have also very kindly donated $500 to St Lucy’s. We are very appreciative of their continual support.

Appreciation for Performing ArtsThe Magic Flute performed by Opera AustraliaOpera Australia brought their very entertaining schools production of The Magic Flute, by Mozart, to St Lucy’s last week. The performers have incredible voices and bring wonderful sets and costumes that make the production seem larger than life. All classes attended the performance and, needless to say, it was a boisterous and appreciative audience! A very big THANK YOU to Opera Australia for donating their talents, time and effort to St Lucy’s once more.

Shekere BeatsLast Friday, we welcomed Jonas Tandoh and his musical adventure, ‘Shekere Beats’. Jonas performed last year at the school and received such high praise for his infectious rhythms and incredible energy that we had to invite him back. Once again, he had St Lucy’s students and staff up and dancing as he played us West African beats from his native Ghana. Students had an opportunity to play some of his percussion instruments and listen up close to the sounds Jonas played. Such a happy way to end the week!

THERAPY UPDATEDear families,

A week is a long time at school! I was away all last week being trained to run MAPA (Management of Actual or Potential Aggression) workshops, and it seems like I missed a lot while I was away. MAPA is an important part of keeping students and staff safe during any difficult moments of upset at St Lucys. The focus is on assisting early in a supportive manner, and maintaining care, welfare, safety and security of all. If you want to know more about MAPA, please contact me.

Special Announcement! For those families who have children using cochlear implants, we have our second meeting of the Cochlear Implant Support Group coming up next Wednesday, 23rd May, 1pm at the school. This is a great opportunity to share your experiences, and to learn together. Hope to see you there.

For weeks 3 and 4, we’re focussing on the word “make”. We’re talking about it in Morning Song, practicing the sign together, and using it around the school. Here’s a link to the video we’re watching in Morning Song each day - tinyurl.com/stlucysmake

If you’re looking for a good model of any sign, I would always suggest checking out the Auslan Signbank. Here’s a link to their entry for “make”. http://www.auslan.org.au/dictionary/words/make-1.html

“Make” is a useful word for a range of activities, like sandpit play, cooking and craft. In focussing on this word, you might just discover a creative talent or natural flare for construction! If you have any little breakthroughs through focussing on this word, let me know! I’d love to hear about it.

Laundry time is a perfect time to work on developmental skills! This everyday activity allows you to target and practice skills that are often worked on in occupational therapy

These skills include visual and spatial perception, bilateral, fine motor, motor planning, sequencing, oculomotor, working memory, executive function & more! Make it playful, finding the missing pair can be fun & motivating for all!

Did you know that our brain’s “brake system”, the pre-frontal cortex, is not fully mature until we reach our 20s (this varies between individuals….some may take longer).

Through childhood and adolescence, it is like we are driving a race car with little or no brake system at all! But don’t worry. Our brain is also like a muscle! The more we use it, the stronger it gets…. Emotion coaching is one way we can help our children’s pre-frontal cortex get stronger!

All the best, Steve Davies Speech Pathologist /Head of Therapy Services

The perfect home away from home.Short term accommodation (respite) for children with disability

Uniting Belfield House is a safe, nurturing place that caters at specific times to children with disability aged between seven and 17. It’s a newly redeveloped house with six beds and offers stays from just one night or a weekend to a week or more.

At Uniting, we understand it’s important your child feels at home. Together, we work with you to create a profile of likes, interests, preferred ways to communicate and anything else we might need to know to make your child comfortable and happy. Our communication wall means your child can express their thoughts, feelings and needs visually.

We’re child led, meaning we plan our daily programs around what children tell us they prefer doing, for example, going to the park, or watching a film. And there’s a lot to do at Belfield House, including:

• An in-ground trampoline • A sensory room with swing• Education-based games and apps on iPads• Books to read and interactive games to play

Our staff ratio is 1:1 or 1:2 and children are grouped according to common abilities and interests. We also focus on building your child’s skills at age-appropriate levels.

Safety and security matter, which is why we carry out risk assessments each time your child visits. Our grounds are fully gated to allow children the freedom to explore safely.

Belfield House is easily accessible and we can arrange for one of our professionally converted accessible vehicles to come to you.

Your child’s spot can be funded under the NDIS if you have core supports, short-term accommodation in your plan. Or, you can simply book with us directly.

We’re happy to discuss our services, so please get in touch today.
