REFLECT

FIRST READING
(Wis 2:20)
The Wisdom writer reveals
the mentality of the wicked,
characterized by revenge and
treachery. How best should
people of faith respond to
such behavior?

SECOND READING
(Jas 3:18)
James offers insight into the
human condition as it relates
to how often our ambitions
and passions can lead us
astray. How do you keep
yourself grounded in holy
intentions?

GOSPEL READING
(Mk 9:31)
We hear today how the disciples were afraid to ask
Jesus questions and reluctant to share with him some
of their tensions. Why do you sometimes hold back
from opening up to the Lord?

GOSPEL MEDITATION
ENCOURAGE DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE

There is something about being first. Whether it be first in line, first to be picked for the
team, or the first one to finish their work, great satisfaction is achieved. Our egos love
being first. It somehow sets us apart from everyone else, gives us a sense of pride and
positions us to feel better than others. When we are first, we can glory in our efforts, skills,
and achievements. Isn’t that what really matters? After all, we are taught from a very
young age to be proficient, stay on top, be the best at what we do, and win the praise and
esteem of others. This is the stuff that makes us successful and provides us with a
comfortable, satisfying life.
Jesus wants none of it. All of the details we anguish over mean little to the kingdom of God. You want to be
first? Then, be a servant and welcome a child. All of this is the opposite of our often vehement pursuits. If we are
serious about following Jesus and living the Gospel, then we must put the needs of others before our own. If we
continue to listen only to the noise of the world, we are going to continue to believe the illusions we inherit. Those
illusions come in many forms, but all have things in common: me before you, being on top and not the bottom, us
versus them, personal security over universal harmony and peace. When are we going to learn that always striving
to be the best and first is an empty pursuit in our struggle for happiness? While satisfying our ego with this
momentary boost of esteem may feel good for a moment, is it what we really desire?
If we can break from the world’s noise and create a space of sacred silence in our lives, we can begin to listen
and see that we are being called in another direction. What we really desire is not the bolstering of our egos but
the innocence we lost somewhere along the way. When we can be playful, joyful, and even somewhat carefree,
life is good. We want our relationships to work, a place to call home, and to live peaceful lives with our sisters and
brothers. Only a servant can do this. The servant’s prayer seeks to detach from selfconcern in order to be used by
God. Rather than worrying about being first and coming out on top, we can be inspired, guided, empowered, and
led to do good works. Stop worrying about being first and put greater energy into feeling joy.

RECYCLING
The Amazing Grace Lutheran Church (on
Dequindre between 12 & 13 Mile Rd), has a recycling
bin at the rear of their parking lot. Once you have read
your newspaper they would appreciate receiving them
as they benefit from this collection. The lot is large and
it is easy to pull up close to the bin with your car to
drop off the bundle. Be a helpful neighbor.

NOTICE OF CHANGE FOR ADULT CATECHISM PROGRAM!!!!!

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,
For a number of reasons it has been decided that the Adult Faith formation program on the Catechism will be
initiated a few weeks later than planned and will run for only 4 weeks, beginning on September 30
th
and running
through October 21
st
.
We are hoping this will allow for more people to register, including those from our Family of Parishes. With a
4 week schedule our intent is to “set the stage” for this new program and establish a foundation as to where people
are at and how to best move forward with adult catechetical formation. We want this to be interesting, exciting and
useful. That is the key. How can this program be fruitful in building up our knowledge of our Catholic beliefs and
how we participate at mass and practice our faith in all that we do and with all whom we encounter!!!
The cost will be $45.00 and covers the 2 required books. These books will carry over into future classes. No
further cost are anticipated as we move forward in the year.
Wishing you all much grace and peace. If there are questions please feel free to email me or Deacon Tom.
God bless,

PRAYER FOR CATECHISTS
God of our fathers and mothers, today we mark Catechetical Sunday, the day we
recommit ourselves to teaching and forming disciples to continue your work in this
world.
In the beginning, you created man to please you and offer you companionship.
We turned away from you without knowing the great love you had for us. Help us to
recapture that understanding of your love for us and for creation. Give us wisdom to
hand on to the next generation that love you freely give us.
We ask all that is good to come upon our catechetical leaders and the people
whom they lead to the faith.
We ask all this in the name of the primary teacher of the faith, Jesus the Christ.
Amen
BLESSING OF CATECHISTS
Jesus, on the road to Emmaus, your followers were frightened and alone, you had just been put to death on a
cross. They met a man on the road leading away from Jerusalem and told them all about you and what your
presence among them meant. They did not realize that the man speaking and walking with them was you, raised
from the dead. When their eyes were opened and they received the gift of faith, they turned around to spread the
word.
We ask you to bless all your disciples who now work as catechists in our parishes. Bless them and give
encouragement to their work, that it will have an impact upon the world. We ask all this in your name, Jesus, our
companion on the road from Emmaus. Amen

GOLF OUTING FUNDRAISER
On Friday, August 27, we held our second St. Louise Golf OutingFundraiser, and let me say, it was a
TREMENDOUS success! We raised a little over $4,100!
The weather was beautiful when we started at 9:00am but as the morning progressed, our dear Lord decided
that Macomb County hadn't had enough rain this summer so He opened the heavens and rain (torrential) it did!
Most of the golfers completed 12 holes, so it wasn't a total wash.

HOLY ROSARY
PARTICIPATION
Please join us in the recitation of
the Holy Rosary after Mass during
the week. What a beautiful way to
honor our Blessed Mother.
In addition to reciting the rosary in
church, consider offering up a
spiritual gift for our country by
reciting the rosary, or at least a decade, at 7 pm
everyday. Pray for the end to unrest, anger and
mutual disrespect in our country, and for the return of
civility, harmony, and peace in our society. Every
prayer will help.
St. Louise Happenings
For pastoral reasons,
and to allow everybody
equal opportunity to
“book a Mass” without
having to wait several months for it, we are accepting
Mass Intentions only 3 months ahead of time.
(Example on September 1 we will be opening the
month of November, on October 1, the month of
December). This will eliminate the current situation
where we have no Mass Intentions for daily Masses,
sometimes for several weeks. Moving forward we will
allow only 3 Sunday Masses in a 6 month period for
the same intention(s) and/or by the same individual.
The rest will automatically be weekday Masses. We
thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
There are 2 Mass Intentions allowed per Mass,
except when the Mass is offered “Pro Populo” (for the
people). In this case, this is the only intention and no
second one will be accepted. The Code of Cannon
Law obliges every Pastor to celebrate one such Mass
for the parish every Sunday (Saturday evening).
KROGER REWARDS
Consider signing up for a Kroger
Plus Card (not a Kroger credit card)
and help our parish benefit, no matter
how big or small your purchases are,
they all count. The easiest way to enroll is by phone
and a Kroger representative will walk you thru the
process. You can shop any Kroger store you choose.
The Kroger phone number is 18005764377 and
our program number is PH 317. It’s really that simple.
Please try it. The greater the number of participants the
greater the Kroger Rewards for the parish.
Let’s do it today!
FELLOW STAMP SAVERS
Thank you for taking the time to cut the cancelled
stamps from your envelopes and getting them to me.
I’m sure that you, like me, get a lot of mailings from
NonProfit organizations and the likes. I’ve had a
recent conversation with the source where our stamps
are sent and was told that several of them aren’t worth
anything in the “stamp market”. So, to save you and
me time, the following pictured stamps are ones you no
longer need to save. If you have any questions, please
give me a call.

WHEN EARS WON’T HEAR

I went downtown shopping for designer sheets
when someone whispered, “I have no bed.”
I stood at an appliance store comparing prices of
microwave ovens when an Ethiopian woman wept, “I
have no food.”
I hired a decorator to remodel my kitchen and to
add more cupboards when a Cambodian child sobbed,
“I have no cup.”
I dreamed of building a getaway place, a cabin in
the woods, a country place. Across the water came the
cry, “I have no country.”
I bought a new widescreen TV for a loved one’s
pleasure when a war orphan murmured, “I have no
loved ones.”
May God forgive us when our ears won’t hear and
our eyes won’t see the sounds and sights of suffering
around us. Amen
A PLACE FOR YOU

How much do you know about the Bible? Or
Christian history? Or different ways of praying? Or
Christian stewardship? Or Christian theology?
Do you even know why most but not all
Christians worship on Sundays?
The point is, no matter what your age, there is
much to learn from classes offered at the church. If you
are interested in learning about a certain religious
topic, speak to the pastor.
Look for the smile which breaks forth on the
pastor’s face. Why? Because an educated
congregation thrills pastors. Learning is part of loving
God with one’s mind. Christian education helps us
understand what living as Christians is all about. So go
ahead, ask about a class that might interest you.
“It is not enough to have a good mind,” said the
French philosopher, René Descartes. “The main thing
is to use it well.” Learning about Christian beliefs and
practices is using one’s mind quite well. Your church is
a place for you to learn. It has a class for you.
LEARN FROM LEAVES

As you’re enjoying the fall colors and sipping apple
cider, ponder this saying “Autumn shows us how
beautiful it is to let things go.”
When leaves stop producing chlorophyll, they turn
vibrant shades of yellow, orange and red. This yearly
spectacle makes way for the leaves to let go and fall. It
also serves as a good reminder of things we may need
to drop: clutter around the home, a desire for control,
commitments that no longer bring joy, personal
expectations that cause added stress, a need to
always be right and so on.
Just as the Israelites had to let go of their past as
slaves in Egypt and SaulturnedPaul had to abandon
his persecuting ways, we, too, can let go of what
weighs us down and gets In the way of God’s best for
our lives. Embrace fall as a season of change and see
just how beautiful it is to let things go!

The View from the Back of the Line
Have you known that person? The one who leaves
every person they encounter feeling a little more
blessed for having met them? They’re the friend you
can count on when nothing is going well. They’re the
one who’s always “doing” for others. They’re never
gossiping or sniping or complaining.
We wonder how they do it, how they have it in
them. We’re a little envious, even if we don’t let
ourselves acknowledge it.
That, folks, is what the view is like from the front of
the line, gazing at those suckers in the way back and
wondering why they’re smiling so much.
We’ve all been at the front of a line and felt no
shame about it. We show up early, we put in the time
and the legwork, and we “earn” whatever it is we came
for sports tickets, the latest Apple product,
whatever. That’s how it works here on Earth, where the
fastest win the race, the fittest survive and the first
shall be first, always.
It’s exactly why stewardship is such a tall order.
Stewardship calls us to play by the rules of another
kingdom one where the richest have the least
amount in their bank accounts and the happiest don’t
seem to have anything to show for it, at least
materially.
If you have a person in your life who always seems
happy “doing” for others, it’s because by a boatload of
God’s grace, they play by the rules of the other place.
Watch and take notes and don’t be afraid to join
them at the back of the line.
