If the worship wars are hot, the stewardship skirmishes are hotter. Congregations – his-toric and emergent – are perplexed. Rea-sons and ways to give money are changing as fast as the econo-my, and faster than

ever before. From the 1990s boom to the 2008 bust to the new normal, what are the practical and theological ele-ments of a compelling model for Chris-tian generosity? Over two plenary ad-dresses, Karl Travis will explain some dynamics we face and outline elements of a transferable stewardship model use-ful in most congregations.

Karl Travis is Senior Pastor of First Presbyterian Church in Fort Worth, Texas. He is a frequent conference speaker, preacher, and writer, particularly in the areas of Christian generosity and generations theory. Locally, Travis is very active in homelessness issues, serving on the Board of Fort Worth’s Presbyterian Night Shelter which provides emergency accommodation to 600 per-sons every night. Also, he serves on the boards of Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary, the James L. West Alzheimer’s Center, and Trinity Terrace Retirement Com-munity. Active across the Presbyterian Church (USA), he has served at the presbytery, synod, and General As-sembly levels.

Previously Travis served congregations in Scotland, New Mexico, and Detroit. Travis is a magna cum laude gradu-ate of Trinity University and the University of Edinburgh. He received a Doctorate of Humane Letters from Austin College. Travis is also a Paul Harris Fellow of Rotary In-ternational.

Together with Jaci, he parents five children, three in college, one in high school, and one in middle school. He adores them, most of the time.

Money is a deeply spiritual issue. We were raised with cer-tain expectations when it came to our resources—whether we talked about them, hid them, resented them, or relished them. During our time together, Carol How-

ard Merritt will explore some of our atti-tudes toward money, examine some of the challenges of emerging generations, and imagine how we can respond as faithful communities.

Carol Howard Merritt has been a pastor for 14 years, serving growing Presbyterian Churches in the swamps of Cajun Louisiana, a bayside village in Rhode Island, an urban neighborhood in D.C., and a town in Tennessee. She is the award-winning author of Tribal Church (Alban 2007) and Reframing Hope (Alban 2010). She has con-tributed to numerous books, websites, magazines, and journals. Her blog, TribalChurch.org, is hosted by the Christian Century. Carol is a sought-after speaker, and she is a founder of Unco, a non-profit organization that hosts open-space gatherings where participants dream about and plan for innovative ministry. She co-hosts God Complex Radio, a podcast with Derrick Wes-ton. Carol lives in Chattanooga, Tennessee, with her daughter and husband Brian Merritt who is starting a new church. You can follow her on Twitter (@CarolHoward) or Facebook.

J. Herbert Nelson, II, serves as Director of the Pres-byterian Church (USA) Office of Public Witness (OPW) in Washington, D.C. The Office of Public Witness is a pro-phetic office of the denomination and implements the social justice agenda of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (USA) through advocacy with the executive and legislative branches of the federal govern-ment.

Jessica Tate is the Director of NEXT Church. Prior to coming on board with NEXT, she served as Associate Pastor of Fairfax Presbyterian Church in Northern Virgin-ia. Jessica is a lifelong Presbyterian, in fact, a joyful preacher’s kid. Upon graduation from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Jessica served as a Young Adult Intern for the PC (USA) at the denomination’s Washington Office. From there she went on to seminary at Union Presbyterian Seminary in Richmond, Virginia, where she received a Master of Divinity and a Master of Arts in Christian Education. Jessica and her husband John live in Washington, D.C. with their rescued choco-late lab GiGi who constantly pulls them outdoors to walk and hike and keeps them humble with her antics and gre-garious affection.

There will be a bookstore at the conference stocked with leading stewardship and other re-sources for faith-based organizations. Confer-ence sponsors will also have displays of the stewardship resources available through their organizations. Come prepared to find the tools you need.

Authors of the new book Bounty, Scott McKenzie and Kristine Miller, will be pre-senting a two-part workshop based on their book. The sessions are titled Unlocking

the Secrets of Bountiful Generosity and are of-fered in Session 2 and Session 3, both on Tues-day. The book will be available in the bookstore or you can pick up a copy and read it in advance of the conference.

1-A: The Pastor as Stewardship Preacher, Guru, and Coach. The pastor is uniquely situated to guide committees and congre-gants to lifestyles of generosity and joy. This workshop will ex-plore practical models of working with stewardship committees, preaching about money, and inspiring fellow disciples to think and act in new ways. It all begins, of course, with the pastor’s willing-ness to practice what she is asked to preach. Karl Travis is Sen-ior Pastor of First Presbyterian Church in Fort Worth, Texas.

1-B: Practical Planned Giving in Congregations 101. In this workshop we will explore the basics of practical planned giving programs, including: what fundamentals should your congregation have in place for a planned giving program? What should your congregation’s leadership know about the different planned gift types? Where do you turn for help? Karl Mattison is Executive Di-rector of the Presbyterian Endowment Education and Resource Network (PEER).

1-C: Creating a Spiritual Culture of Generosity in Your Church. This workshop will outline a proven program that moves churches from a four-week stewardship campaign to a yearly spiritual culture of generosity. Hands-on ideas will be shared and lively discussion will take place. Kevin J. Garvey is Chief Development Officer, Board of Pensions PC (USA) and Chief Ministry Relations Officer, Presbyterian Foundation. Repeat-ed during Session 2.

1-D: Stewardship, Compassion and Justice. This workshop will examine stewardship of more than just financial resources as it casts the net into the realm of justice and compassion in the world in which we find ourselves. The seminar will offer ways for the church and individuals to model stewardship in all areas of their lives. Rev. J. Herbert Nelson is the Director of the Office of Public Witness in Washington D.C.

1-E: Making Money Move for Mission and Ministry. It exists—it is there—millions of dollars that can make a difference. It may be in the rainy day fund or your pocket or someone else’s pocket. We will discuss how to tap these resources, remove road blocks and grease the skids to get money moving through the system to sup-port mission and ministry. Lisa Longo is a Ministry Relations Of-ficer for the Presbyterian Foundation and Charles Spencer is Ex-ecutive Presbyter of Heartland Presbytery.

1-F: Can You Really Raise Money With That? Come explore the use of a variety of “new age” tactics in raising money for the Church—social media channels like Facebook and Twitter as well as other technology based tools like SMS messaging. This ses-sion will discuss the pros, cons, limitations and opportunities with each tactic and also provide real-world examples of using each within the Church. Sam Locke is the Director of Special Offerings for the Presbyterian Mission Agency.

1-G: Seven Stewardship Secrets Other Nonprofits Don’t Want You to Know. Twenty years ago, the church received 50 per-cent of U.S. charitable gifts. Today it’s 33 percent. In other words, the church is losing ground to other nonprofits. What do they know that we don’t? Lots! Come hear their secrets divulged. Lisa Strandberg is a ruling elder, stewardship chair and nonprofit development director.

During the block of free time on Tuesday afternoon, five roundtable sessions are available for anyone interested in engag-ing with other participants. We will pro-vide a moderator to the five scheduled roundtables, or conference participants may propose their own roundtable topics onsite.

1-H: Asset-Based Stewardship for the Small Member-ship Church. Small membership congregations are often better at recognizing their limitations than affirming their unique assets. Small church stewardship has possi-bilities. The church’s vision need not be small, nor must it struggle with financial resources. From nurturing leader-ship, special gifts, bequests and the annual financial stewardship emphasis, this workshop will explore energiz-ing stewardship ministry in the small membership congre-gations, offering new ideas and possibilities. Participants will receive a variety of practical resources to be adapted to their particular context. The Rev. David L. McDonald is Pastor, Clayton Presbyterian Church, Clayton, Indiana. Repeated during Session 3.

1-I: Congregational Investing: Impact on Mission. Per-manent endowments are important in supporting mission. And mission activity is integral in determining how an en-dowment is structured. Discover the impact of well-structured endowments on mission through a series of examples and plenty of discussion. Tim Clark is Chief Operating Officer for New Covenant Trust Company, a subsidiary of the Presbyterian Foundation, and Stephen Keizer is Vice President of Ministry Relations for the Presbyterian Foundation.

1-J: How to Execute Your Stewardship Plan. The theme is in place and the calendar made. Now you need to develop the collateral materials, a narrative budget, and train volunteers to make calls and visits. Come dis-cuss what it takes to tell your story, reach your members in a meaningful way, and successfully execute your plan. Sherry Kenney is a Ministry Relations Officer for the Presbyterian Foundation. Repeated during Session 4.

2-A: Stewardship 101: How a Presbytery Team Trains Congregations. The Stewardship Team of Hudson River Presbytery will share the story of how they were formed, how they have trained 80 of their 85 congrega-tions with basic stewardship practices, and the curriculum and resources they have created. The conversation will include discussion of year round stewardship education, the biblical basis of healthy stewardship, the theology of abundance in a world focused on scarcity, some do’s and don’ts of stewardship practices, narrative budgets, and even more. Led by the Stewardship Team of Hudson Riv-er Presbytery.

2-B: Unlocking the Secrets of Bountiful Generosity - Part 1. Church leaders struggle with financial giving every year, in every economic climate. Most do not want to preach about the topic, and some don’t even like to think about it. Some church leaders resort to gimmicks or even manipulation. This workshop will focus on the foun-dational issues of spirituality and leadership, providing immediately doable steps for growing generosity and transforming congregations. This workshop will equip

leaders to shift their congregants’ hearts as well as their wallets. Scott McKenzie is Senior Vice President and Kristine Miller is Vice President with Horizons Stew-ardship. They are authors of Bounty: Ten Ways to In-crease Giving at Your Church.

2-C: Making the “Ask”. Many pastors have never met with a member to ask for support for a particular project. It feels unseemly and even threatening. We’ll discuss some of the reasons it’s okay to ask for financial support, offer some tips on creating an opportunity to make ‘the ask’ successfully, and share some success stories. The Rev. Minner Serovy is a Ministry Relations Officer for the Presbyterian Foundation, and the Rev. Eric Chavis is a Ministry Relations Officer for the Presbyterian Founda-tion.

2-D: Electronic Giving: Back to the future. Did you ever think about the offering plate as a radical innovation? How long has the church been passing the plate? It’s a lot more recent than you think. Hear how the church has a long tradition of innovation to help us give as faithfully and effectively as possible and how that may help guide us considering electronic giving in the church. J.C. Austin is Director of Christian Leadership Formation, Auburn Theo-logical Seminary, New York City.

2-E: Endowment 101. Learn about policies and proce-dures for establishing and promoting permanent funds as an added dimension of stewardship for the local church. We will consider how to invest, how much to spend, how endowments impact annual giving and governance issues in a Presbyterian church. Kim Warner is Director of Gift Planning, First Presbyterian Church, Dallas, TX.

2-F: What’s Age Got to Do With It? Attitudes to money and generosity are shaped early. With five living genera-tions in our pews, a one-size-fits-all stewardship model is no longer faithful. This workshop will compare and con-trast the inspirations of each living generation and explore elements of a stewardship effort which speaks to all, no matter their Birth year. Karl Travis is Senior Pastor of First Presbyterian Church in Fort Worth, Texas.

2-G: Stewardship Without Pledges – It Can Work. Have you ever heard of a tithing church? In 2004, First Presbyterian Church of Redwood Falls, MN decided to become a tithing church, and it has transformed their mis-sion and ministry. Beyond that, it has transformed church members to a point where they no longer do annual pledging. Come and hear their story and learn how you may take this idea home to your church. Scott Prouty is Pastor at First Presbyterian Church, Redwood Falls, Minnesota.

studies in local, denominational, and public life will be considered. J.C. Austin is Director of Christian Leader-ship Formation, Auburn Theological Seminary, New York City.

3-D: What’s in your Presbyterian Stewardship Toolbox? Need assistance with your ongoing stew-ardship? The Presbyterian Foundation has resources and services in many facets of stewardship. We are here to assist in building financially strong congregations which we believe make for more vibrant and viable wor-shipping communities. Come learn about the resources available to you and your congregation including our online stewardship assessment tool. Olanda Carr is a Ministry Relations Officer for the Presbyterian Founda-tion.

3-E: Communicating Stewardship and PC(USA) Mis-sion in the Presbytery. Discover a year-round strate-gy that has been successful in one presbytery to help the presbytery and local churches strengthen steward-ship and increase giving to basic mission in the PC(USA). Melanie Hancock is Associate General Presbyter of the Presbytery of Northern Kansas.

3-F: Capital Campaigns 101. This session will focus on the basics of capital campaigns: their value to a church’s overall stewardship program, how to determine readiness for a campaign, and the elements of a suc-cessful campaign. Tom Norwood is a Presbyterian pastor and Ministry Strategist for Horizons Stewardship.

3-G: Electronic Giving: The Tools. Is this your Church? Many sitting in your pews can’t give you money the way they want to. They don't use cash or checks, and you cannot accept the plastic they want to use. Church is the only place left where they can’t give their money with a click. Who are these givers? What are the tools that they use? How much do these tools cost the Church? Who are the vendors? What do you need to know to make a decision? Robert Hay, Jr., is a Minis-try Relations Officer for the Presbyterian Foundation.

3-H: Asset-Based Stewardship for the Small Mem-bership Church. (Repeated from Session 1.)

3-I: Making the “Ask”. (Repeated from Session 2.)

4-A: Stewardship as Relational Leadership. If you ask people why they go to a particular church, they will often tell you it's because of the people. Relationships are where people find meaning and connection at church -- they are essential to our existence as the Body of Christ -- but when it comes to talking about money, we often move away from relationships to more distant forms of communication: letters, minutes for steward-ship, pledge cards. This workshop will explore our dis-comfort around money as well as other ideas for ways to overcome those fears and put the gift of relationships back into stewardship in a way that builds up our con-gregations and our shared commitment to ministry. Jessica Tate is the Director of NEXT Church.

2-H: Christian Financial Planning for Every Genera-tion. What role should the church play in educating members about handling finances? This workshop will cover a Christian perspective to financial planning and basic steps to be covered in personal planning for youth through retiree. Brad Masters is Assistant Vice Pres-ident for New Covenant Trust Company.

2-I: Multiracial and Multicultural Financial Steward-ship. Participants will be introduced to an in -depth look at cultural and racial dynamics that stimulate and empower financial stewardship in racial ethnic congre-gations. Presentations will be made showing how stew-ardship learning that Emerged from racial ethnic groups can Equip and Engage any congregation. We will also look at wills, bequests and long-range giving in racial communities. James Foster Reese is the Minister for Specialized Interpretation for the Presbyterian Founda-tion.

2-J: Creating a Spiritual Culture of Generosity in Your Church. (Repeated from Session 1.)

3-A: Creative Destruction and the Church. As we think about stewardship, we know that our resources go beyond the money that we tithe--we offer gifts of time, energy and imagination. Churches also have resources of buildings and spaces. How are congregations be-coming active stewards of what they have? In this work-shop, we will talk about different models of stewardship that are emerging, as we think of the resources of the whole community. Carol Howard Merritt is a speaker, author and pastor.

3-B: Unlocking the Secrets of Bountiful Generosity—Part 2. While building on Part 1, Part 2 will provide stand-alone practical suggestions for mov-ing your church from a philosophy of fundraising to one of faith-based bountiful generosity. Learn the five bad habits churches often fall into and how to replace them with best stewardship practices that will transform and inspire. This workshop will enable church leaders to re-engage their members with a message of bountiful gen-erosity. Scott McKenzie is Senior Vice President and Kristine Miller is Vice President with Horizons Stew-ardship. They are authors of Bounty: Ten Ways to In-crease Giving at Your Church.

3-C: Just Giving? Fundraising Without Fear In an Age of Conflict and Controversy. This workshop will address the often-avoided subject of how controversial issues and congregational giving affect one another. The fear of offending givers leads many to avoid ad-dressing controversial issues, while the fear of being “co-opted” on an issue keeps many others from con-cerning themselves with the giving life of their church at all. This workshop will examine ways to be more holistic and effective in our ministries of giving, preaching, so- cial justice, and mission, and how giving can actually create opportunities for reconciliation and unex- pected partnership between factions. 4-B: A Discernment Process for Giving. Many churchgoers struggle to determine what God is calling them to fi-nancially give to their church. This presen-tation covers ways for leaders to learn and teach others steps to being more purpose-ful at generosity. Sean Mitchell is Steward-ship Development Director at Myers Park Presbyterian Church, Charlotte, North Car-olina.

4-C: Planned Giving: A Cooking Light Recipe for Churches. This workshop will focus on three different strategies for inte-grating planned giving into your church’s overall stewardship effort and educational ministries. Topics covered include identify-ing and engaging planned giving prospects, strategies for celebrating commitments, developing a case statement for endow-ment and inviting donors to make a differ-ence forever for your church. The focus of this workshop is on the practical aspects of launching and marketing a legacy giving initiative, not on the technical/legal aspects of planed giving vehicles. Participants will leave with an understanding of how to launch an incremental approach to a lega-cy giving initiative. Chris McLeod is with Horizons Stewardship. 4-D: Endowment 202.
