From Fr. Mark’s Desk: Twenty Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time: “But when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?” Holocaust survivor, Elie Wiesel once said, “The opposite of love is not hate; it is indiffer-ence”. This quote is inspiring for various reasons but a dominant reason is that he survived the holocaust without preaching hate. Jesus on the mountain before his crucifixion invites his disciples to pray to get through ‘this hour’. They sleep instead. They are not ready when ‘the hour’ arrives. The necessity of praying always resides in the soul of the one who remains per-sistent and passionate in correc ng injus ce, but in a just way. The widow in our gospel will not allow an injus ce to occur. She is not indifferent, she is a person of love. Faith is living justly in this world, as a reflec on of God’s world, and our ul mate des ny in heaven, (or hell, for the unjust). Pope John Paul II is well known for having said, “If you want peace, work for jus ce”. The Catholic Church adheres to seven themes of Social Teaching. (Social Teaching is not the same as Socialism, by the way!!) These themes are to be taken seriously as reflec ons of the Gospel and Chris an Discipleship.

1. Life and Dignity of the Human Person 2. Call to Family, Community, and Par cipa on 3. Rights and Responsibili es 4. The Op on for the Poor and Vulnerable 5. The Dignity of Work and the Rights of Workers 6. Solidarity 7. Care for God’s Crea on

In these themes, we are called not to indifference, but to persistent love, just like the wid-ow. This can be an exhaus ng challenge, but we are not called to sleep, we are called by Jesus to pray!

~ Looking ahead, our annual Mass of Remembrance will take place at 4pm Mass on Saturday November 2nd. ~Coming Monday October 28th, St. Linus will co-host Mary, in Chris anity and Islam: A Bridge or Barrier to Interfaith Dialogue at Saint Xavier University McGuire Hall at 7pm. The event is free and open to the public. Have a great week! Fr. Mark Walter

The St. Vincent de Paul Society

LOVE IN OUR WORK In the Gospel today Jesus tells his disci-ples to pray always without becoming weary. Indeed our prayer must always be an expression of our love for God, our family, our world, and the suffering poor.

As you place your gift in the Society of St. Vincent de Paul Poor Box, please say a special prayer for the poor who have no one to pray for them.

THIS weekend is our monthly non-perishable food drive for the St. Margaret of Scotland food pan-try. Please be generous as we seek to feed the hungry as the weather turns colder.

PLEASE NOTE: We are always looking for new members or volunteers. Leave your name and number

at the rectory. “Bundle Weekend” in the parking lot.

Bring your gently used winter clothing, “rags”, small appliances, etc. Trailers will be open and accepting donations in the church parking lot before and after all Masses. The “Bundle Weekend” helps our St. Vincent de Paul stores replenish their inventories so we can assist the needy through our voucher program. Help a neighbor stay warm this winter.

We’re a small group of about a dozen people. We meet for one hour on Tues-days from 10-11 a.m. in the Cardiff Center. We gather to renew our faith each week and to pray for our needs and the needs of others. We examine the

readings for the upcoming weekend in church and use a guide to help us understand the Scriptures bet-ter. Come join us!

October—Respect Life Month—Cross Display Our St. Linus Prolife Committee has erected 60 white crosses to focus on unborn babies missing

from our families, churches, schools and population.

One cross represents:

1 million unborn babies aborted

60 crosses represent: 60 million babies aborted

(From 1973 to 2018)

Approximately 1/5 of our population has been destroyed by Roe/Wade & Doe/Bolton

Saint John Paul II called us to replace a culture of death with a culture of life!

Pray for all those who have died or been hurt

by the abortion culture raging in the USA

CAN’T WE SAVE THEM BOTH!?

October—Respect Life Month

USCCB Theme: Christ Our Hope

IN Every Season!

Point for Reflection:

What did you think about the “trophy” babies found in Dr. Klopfer’s home?

Did you Know: Only Fox News cared about this

revolting story. CNN gave it 30 seconds on a weekend, and The New York Times offered one

story deep inside the paper on page A-22.

ABC, CBS, NBC, MSNBC, NPR, PBS—NO interest!?

40 Days for Life Fall Vigil The Fall 40 Days for Life campaigns will run from Wednesday, September 25th until Sunday, No-vember 3rd. The campaign in front of the Floss-moor Planned Parenthood abortion mill will run from 8AM until 8PM each day. There is plenty of time to reach out and invite fellow parishioners to join for a few hours on the vigil. Think about who you might invite to join you in this life-saving effort. Last Spring there was at least one known baby saved by our presence in front of Flossmoor during the 40 Days for Life...and Flossmoor, where we have rela-tively little chance to communicate with the mothers and those accompanying them as they pull in and out of Planned Parenthood, is a spot where there may well be babies who have been saved about whom we don’t know. Dr. Rich Mantoan, DDS, will once again be the local leader. For more information regarding this event contact: John L. Ryan at [email protected] or call 708-945-8247.
