Thenew study, publishedonline in the journal TheLancet Wednesday, wasreported to be the first todetect signs of awarenessin patients living in theunresponsive statethrough more accessibleelectroencephalogram(EEG) machine.

The EEG is a portableand more affordabletechnique than MagneticResonance Imaging(MRI) scanner, but it is aseffective as the MRI todiagnose patients in the

BEIJING, 10 Nov— The mystery of the leopard-spotted horses depicted in the Stone Age at a cave inFrance was deciphered — they did live alongsideancient humans, according to media reports Monday.

After comparing the DNA of modern horses andfossils of prehistoric horses, a group of scientists fromGermany and UK found the famous spotted horsescoexisted with their creators.

The finding was published in the journalProceedings of the National Academy of SciencesMonday.

The almost 25,000-year-old paintings, “TheDappled Horses of Pech-Merle”on the walls of thePech-Merle cave, remarkably look similar to a patternknown as “leopard” in modern horses such asAppaloosas, according to New York Times.

For a long time, they were regarded as fantasiesrather than real accurate portrayals.

“It was critical to ensure that the horse depictionsfrom the cave paintings were based on real-lifeexperiences rather than products of the imagination,”stated lead author Arne Ludwig from the LeibnizInstitute for Zoo and Wildlife Research in Berlin.

The finding can help figure out when horses weredomesticated, a critical moment in the development ofhuman societies, the study noted. In general, domesticated species exist in a far greater variety ofcolours than wild ones, so understanding color variationin fossil animals can help pinpoint the timing, accordingto the New York Times.—Xinhua

that water is one weirdsubstance, exhibitingmore than 80 unusualproperties, by one count, including some thatscientists still struggle tounderstand.

In another strangeturn, scientists haveproposed that water cango from being one type ofliquid into another in a so-called “liquid-liquid”phase transition, but it isimpossible to test this withtoday’s laboratoryequipment because thesethings happen so fast. That’s why Kumar andStanley used computersimulations to check it out.

They found that whenthey chilled liquid waterin their simulation, itspropensity to conduct heatdecreases, as expected for

an ordinary liquid. But,when they lowered thetemperature to about 54degrees below zeroFahrenheit, the liquidwater started to conductheat even better in thesimulation. Their studiessuggest that below thistemperature, liquid waterundergoes sharp butcontinuous structuralchanges whereas the localstructure of liquidbecomes extremelyordered — very much likeice. These structuralchanges in liquid waterlead to increase of heatconduction at lowertemperatures.

The researchers saythat this surprising resultsupports the idea that waterhas a liquid-liquid phasetransition.—Internet
