On the 10th June 1959, The Lord Bishop of Chichester, The Rt. Rev. Roger Wilson, dedicated a dual-purpose Church / hall building in Walmer Road, Chyngton. St Luke’s Church celebrates its 60th anniversary this year, and as has become our custom, we will celebrate on the Sunday closest to St Luke’s Day (18th October). This year we plan to hold a special service on Sunday 20th October, bringing the regular congregations who meet at the St. Luke’s Church together at 11am to celebrate. A Truly Scrumptious Spoonful of Songs... A show for ‘the child in every person’... the concert provides the chance to sing-a-long and hear about how some of the songs were written. ‘There Can Be Miracles’ and ‘The Prayer’ give the performance a thought provoking edge - but the show is primarily about bringing families and all ages together. In 1937 the possibility of a hall being built in the Alfriston Road area, then the edge of town, was under discussion. Together with a Council

Survey, a scheme was approved by the Vicar and churchwardens and a site purchased. But the advent of war put everything on hold. 12 years later that site was sold, for a profit, for much needed, post-war housing developments. Then eventually, in 1954, the Seaford U.D.C. offered a half acre site on the newly developing Chyngton estate, which the Church Commissioners accepted as a new area to be called Sutton-cum-Seaford. Plans were produced and tenders were invited for a dual-purpose building - initially a hall, with the church to be added later, as funds became available. The Diocese of Chichester gave a £5000 grant, matched by a £5000

loan and the parish became responsible for raising an additional £3000 plus the cost of furnishing. The total cost came to £15,791 and the loan debt was cleared by 1963 thanks to the very commendable efforts of local residents sharing in fundraising events, including the traditional summer fete, which is still held today. 1955 saw the opening of the dual-purpose hall by the then Vicar of St Leonard’s Parish Church, Revd. Francis William Shillito. In 1958 a stone was set in the outside wall of the tower by the Chairman of the Chichester Diocesan Finance Committee, Lord McCorquodale – though a detailed record will show that on the day, Lord McCorquodale was unwell and a substitute attended in his place! The inscription on the stone bears the heading A.M.D.G. – standing for the Latin ‘Ad majorem Dei gloriam’, which translates as ‘To the greater glory of God’. The 10th June dedication was well attended by members of the St Leonard’s congregation. There was a Guard of Honour of Guides and Scouts from St Leonard’s with many young people attending. The event was so well attended by guests from the town that there was limited space for local residents! One immediate benefit for the local

community was a church base for the already established Sunday School, which had almost 200 children enrolled, as well as a Bible school for adults. The Sunday school had been started in Chyngton Primary School, Saltwood Road, at the invitation of the Vicar of St Leonard’s, by the late Audrey Moore. Her key involvement was celebrated at a service of thanksgiving for her life a little earlier this year, with a number of members from over the decades attending. The Sunday School was well established by 1958, when the hall had first opened, but I note that permission for the groups to use the hall had to be granted from Church of England authorities before they were allowed to! Amongst our membership are still one or two members who were involved in those very early years, and many who have been part of our shared life are remembered with great affection. St Luke, to whom the church is dedicated, was a writer, a doctor and an evangelist. [Perhaps less well-known, tradition tells us that St Luke was also an artist.] He was an eyewitness to some of the events surrounding St. Paul and detailed in the book of Acts. It is fitting that the church is dedicated in St Luke’s name, given the intention to provide a place for worship, the understanding of scripture, and the desire to share the

Good News of the Gospel in a new place where there would perhaps otherwise have been no church. That intention continues today, as a Parish we seek to Facilitate the Miraculous, helping people to encounter the Lord Jesus and grow in their living relationship with him. The dual-purpose building is used widely for different community activities, young people are welcomed to a youth group, worship and prayer are offered regularly in a variety of formats, we continue to support our mission partners in other parts of the world – and share in their work through their visits. 60 years since the dedication of St Luke’s, it is clear that God is alive and at work in His Church. It is always a privilege to pray for God’s healing and a joy to bear testimony to answered prayer at St Luke’s too. As I write, a parish-wide Alpha Course is about to begin and we continue to pray, wait on God and watch for the miraculous changes He will bring, by the power of the Holy Spirit, as we step out in faith to serve Him. As another season of Remembrance begins in these months, where we will recall the 80th anniversary of the start of a World War, amongst many other conflicts, and as we remember with thanksgiving the all those who have given their todays for our

tomorrows, let us also remember and give thanks for the inspiration, foresight, generosity and service all those who brought St Luke’s into being and have contributed in so many ways over these past 60 years. And let us continue to explore how God would play our part in facilitating the miraculous in our generation, not just for future generations and the building of his kingdom. Happy Birthday, St Luke’s!

By the time this edition hits the streets the Flower Festival and Harvest will have past and we will be looking towards a busy but exciting period of church life including the St Luke’s Patronal celebrations, Remembrance Day, and then headlong into Advent and Christmas. Straddling all this will be the Alpha Course. The common denominator of all these events is that many people will come streaming through the doors of our churches, some for the first time, some for annual visits. So, what has this got to do with Homegroups? There are two areas of homegroup involvement in all these events. The first is that homegroups are one of the ‘entry points’ to the church family, they are the ‘ragged edge’ of the church. They are often the place where people with no Sunday

commitment to church have an attachment to God’s family. Attending homegroup with spouses, friends, they are loosely connected, but are exposed to the gospel and demonstration of the gospel in the lives of those regular homegroup members. Over the next months there is a wonderful opportunity for homegroup members not only to invite friends and contacts to church for the big events that are coming up, but to identify those visiting the church and to welcome them as if they were coming into our own homes. Then…to invite them into our own homes by drawing them into homegroup. What better gift can we give those visitors, often ignorant of the possibility of a personal living relationship with the ‘Most High God’, than to introduce them to our Lord and Saviour Jesus? If our homegroups are as good as people tell me, then invite others in to join in the excitement of growing to know Jesus more and more as the

days go by Share the blessing! The second area of involvement is in supporting the Alpha course which will be underway by the time you read this. For many this course will be a refresher, or revitaliser for their discipleship walk with our Lord. For others it will be a first introduction to the Lord Jesus. You may be thinking that you are not attending, that you are not helping on the evenings, so what does homegroup have to do with Alpha? Alpha does not run in isolation from the rest of church life, homegroups should not exist in isolation from each other or the wider congregations. So, whilst all homegroups may not be involved by attendance, while they will continue as usual whilst Alpha is ongoing, there is one thing that homegroups can do to support the Alpha Course. Pray. Pray through the duration of the course, stay informed with what Alpha is doing and the topics covered so that we all might pray with focus and understanding. Maybe look at the online videos to see the discussion and pray for those leading the round-table discussions that the conversations will open the spiritual eyes of the participants in order that they may see Jesus.

If you need resources or guidance in doing this contact myself, Charlie Grimble or Damian Brennan, who will be delighted to point you in the right direction. We have a tremendous opportunity over the coming weeks and months, let us grasp it with both hands that His Kingdom may be built here among us, for His glory.

If you would like to join a home group please

and they can tell you when and where groups meet.

The last few months have fairly flown by. In July two of our pilots here finished their terms and two others were away on their home assignment, leaving three pilots here for all the flying. This meant July and August were the two busiest flying months I've ever had. Usually I'd do 50-60 flight hours a month but I did 80 hours in July, and 78 in August! This brought it's own challenge, especially in the wet season. With low cloud preventing me from getting into destinations a few times, or heavy rain rendering runways un-landable. Dealing with all that while flying continuously has really shown

me the maximum I can work to. I am most definitely ready for a break out to Kenya and then Greece to see my sister! All the while I have thoroughly enjoyed being busy and going to certain places regularly has reconnected me with a few regular passengers. This has left me feeling more at home here and "local". I've also been trying to increase my language skill in "Juba Arabic" and am noticing a marked appreciation from the South Sudanese as I fumble through the words I've learnt. On one of our regular shuttles to the west I flew out some teachers to Ibba girls

Greetings from Juba! Danny Gill

boarding school. They came prepared with the text books that the girls would be using for that school year. I love the variety of cargo and passengers we carry. Holy trinity peace village is an amazing initiative set up in Kuron. Bishop Taban who heads up the project is a truly inspirational man. We brought out avocado and mango trees for the villagers to plant in their community as a way of selling some goods and getting access to more healthy food options. Many large NGO's consult the bishop on his peace initiatives. He also showed his generosity by giving me a goat to take back to the MAF compound for a staff lunch! There are some amazing missionaries and groups working in remote parts of South Sudan. One of these places, Tonj, can take 3 days to drive to. I was privileged to fly a family of New Zealander's up to Tonj to visit their Nephew who works

there. The missionaries are doctors working in a hospital that was set up by a British lady who moved there many years ago.

They see up to 1000 patients a month mainly working in a maternal clinic. The visitors brought up a CPAP (Continuous positive airway pressure) Machine which was for babies born prematurely. The day after I dropped them off a lady delivered at 26 weeks and they were able to use this new machine for the premature baby. I haven't heard what happened to the baby, but I was grateful to hear the baby had access to a machine that could potentially be the difference between life and death. Thank you for your continued support and prayers for all going on here in South Sudan. This has been a growing time for me. I have said goodbye to quite a few friends, flown record numbers and taken on leadership of a church bible study for 8 or so

Fred Bass writes about riding… We cycled, for the morning only as Jayne had to work in the afternoon getting to St. Andrews, Bishopstone at 9.00am, then on to St. Leonard’s Denton, St. Michael’s, Newhaven, St. John’s Piddinghoe, St. Peter’s Southease, St. Peter’s Rodmell, St. Nicholas Iford, St. Pancras Kingston. We then went to Lewes where we visited Trinity, St. Michael’s, St. Anne’s, St. Pancras & St. John’s Sub-castro. We had to get a train back to Seaford to save time where we both went to our very own St. Leonard’s. Jayne went to work and I carried on to St. Luke’s before finishing at St. Peter’s East Blatchington. So Jayne visited 14 and myself 16. It was a glorious day and the amazing thing to me was that I had not visited five of the Churches at all even though we have lived here about 35 years! Many were lovely ancient buildings nestling in the South Downs.

David Paul also cycled to 16 churches! I can recommend more people get involved next year raising money for our own church as well as the historic churches trust. Thank You from all Riders & Striders A huge thanks to the volunteers who manned our churches, your support was invaluable: Marion Cliff, Janet Kent, Sue Saunders, Carolyn Lacy, Inga Tuly, Sue Comben, Julia Lawson, Tony Willer and Diane & Michael Constanzo. Thank you. Sponsoring If you have not sponsored the Riders and Striders there’s still time. Please contact any of those that took part. Ride+Stride is a sponsored bike ride or walk in which people all over England walk or cycle between churches. The money they raise helps to save historic churches, chapels and meeting houses for future generations by helping to fund urgent repairs and the installation of modern facilities. Each year the event raises over £1 million pounds.

Charlie Christie writes about striding… We couldn’t have asked for a better day for it. The sun was shining with a promise of a hot late summer day. Bob Carrington and I met at St. Leonard’s Church at 9 am (well, just after – as usual I was chasing my tail), where we were greeted by Janet Kent & Sue Saunders, who were all ready with the sign-in sheets, sponsor forms and refreshments. From St. Leonards, Bob and I started our walk along Steyne Road where, just a few minutes in and heading for St. Luke’s we were offered a lift by a passing Damien Brennan! I soon discovered that Bob is a fount of local knowledge as he pointed out various buildings and gave me their history, told me who used to - or currently - lived there, including his own. Once at St. Luke’s (Marion Cliff

manned the desk all day), with a quick check that the defibrillator was in order and pleased that ours were the first names on the sheet, we had a glass of water and a comfort break before setting off to St. Peter’s, Blatchington. As we continued our walk through Chyngton the conversation flowed easily, and the sun became increasingly warmer. We wended our way down Vale Road and up Lexden Road, passing Phil Armstrong on the way. Once we were in upper Sherwood Road, we were called to by an elderly lady who asked if we would be kind enough to post her letters for

her, which we gladly did. On reaching St. Peters, we took in the beautiful churchyard and signed in to our third church. Continuing along Belgrave Road where we were able to see the Blatchington Branch, a privately-owned garden railway. Continuing to Beacon drive, Princess Drive and up a few hills, over Grand Avenue we made it to the open fields. And what a stunning sight to behold. I will never tire of the magnificent views across Seaford Bay afforded by the farmers fields. Bob and I offered up thanks that we were lucky enough to have been blessed with such wonderful weather. We made our way down through Bishopstone where we passed a large group of walkers (not Riders & Striders) and arrived at the very beautiful St. Andrews. I've never been to this church before and it was a lovely opportunity to take in the charming churchyard and Anglo-Saxon architecture. Stopping in St. Andrew’s we were greeted warmly by Hillary Norsworthy, who offered us a much needed and very much appreciated glass of squash and a Kit-Kat! Once we had stopped for a chat and re-fuel we were once again on our way, this time homeward bound back to St. Leonard’s. Bob and I chose to cross

over the busy A259 and head straight for the seafront. On a day as beautiful as this, it was great to be walking along the promenade. We chatted away until we reached the ice cream van, where Bob very kindly bought us both an ice cream with a flake! Needless to say, it was welcomed, delicious and devoured, thank you Bob!

As our walk drew to a close, I thought (as I very often do) how lucky we are to live in Seaford with all of this on our doorstep. We made it back to St. Leonard’s at around 11:45am, some 15,000 steps/7 miles later! Janet Fairchild and Carolyn Lacy were ready to greet us as was the sound of the Lunchtime Concert rehearsal. Bob and I had a quick photo and I headed home to rest my weary legs. What a wonderful morning! All that needs to be said now is, thank you to all who sponsored us, if you haven’t already given in your sponsorship money then we will be chasing you very soon!

Terry Howell brings news of Homelink Our Service Manager Pippa has recovered from her surgery and is back, working very hard as usual. We are very thankful that we appointed Fran as her assistant only last October; consequently she kept things going in Pippa’s absence. Deputy Lieutenant David Allam kindly offered us his large garden in Bishopstone to hold an Open Afternoon at the end of July. Relaxing music was provided by the Seaford Handbell Ringers and the Lewes Ukulele Band. There were homemade cakes and tea to enjoy, and novels to buy. The weather could not have been better: a cool morning for setting up followed by a sunny but not too hot afternoon. Everyone enjoyed themselves and the warm glow of a perfect summer’s afternoon lingers on. We are grateful to all who contributed by organising or donating and we made over £2000. Our next event is our 20th anniversary Gala Concert at Glyndebourne on Sunday

afternoon November 17th. We have received £28,000 in sponsorship. The Concert programme is summarised on the Glyndebourne website as:- Classical greats, upcoming young performers, community choirs and high-profile names from stage and screen will be joining local people helped by homelessness prevention charity, HOMELINK. Sales have been going well but there are seats left at £30-£50. Booking is not entirely straightforward. In order to book’ go to www.glyndebourne.com and then ‘Menu’ which leads to ‘More events’ and you will find ‘HOMELINK Gala Charity Concert’. This site has all the details and you see how to book seats in auditorium. The excellent Ashdown Singers Annual Christmas Concert is at St Thomas More Church on

‘Called to Serve’ was the

theme of this year’s Flower Festival and what beautiful and imaginative arrangements were created to remind us of the variety of ways each one of us can serve those around us and our Saviour God.

We were greeted by the smiling scarecrow that seemed to be proffering us his recently harvested produce followed by

the artist highlighting the simple beauty of five sunflowers. Visitors could recall a time before there was a need to call the plumber with a simple washstand adorned by stunning roses. The more modern hairdryer was to hand for the very elegant client resplendent with crowning flowers. Within the confines of a zimmer frame so much was expressed about loving care and how many operations were represented by the wonderfully cascading

Health Professionals’ display? Did you canter past the sportsperson or feel you could accept the hospitality of the caterers: be that from a teapot or champagne bottle. Then there were the fascinating choristers with their folded paper flowers and the mechanic who remained under the car without a break. We could admire the solemnity of the undertaker and those representing the armed services, then imagine our Mission Partner, Danny Gill flying that

plane in South Sudan. Who would have thought, that in the church’s smallest window, the Information Industry would be represented simply by a phone, apples, blackberries and ear phones. Flashing lights alerted us to the Emergency Services: again a wider concept well depicted in a confined space. The wonderful old carpenter’s tools blended so well with the orange and russet flowers. Light bulbs encapsulating specimen flowers, cable and other lighting installations immediately recalled the

electrician. The teacher and youthworker clearly depicted with another beautiful arrangement; musicians were represented with a violinist. A builder complete with their own house (did you notice the flower petal curtains?). Star and silver fish on the sandy shore denoted the seafarer.

Standing in front of the altar you could see yourself called to serve just like the first disciples left their nets to follow Jesus: some into the community others into the wider church. The Bible Translators working around the world were elegantly depicted nearby. Behind the altar rail were three splendid interlinked arrangements reaching outwards and upwards as a youth worker, ordained minister and those serving in the Beachy Head Chaplaincy Team. Finally the question was asked ‘Where are you called to serve?’ In

Thank you so much to all who helped in so many ways! It was good that we all, ably co-ordinated by Margaret Smith, came together from the different congregations to reach out and serve those around us. Those who visited the church, some for the

first time, were very appreciative of the wonderful array of flowers, many commented on the special atmosphere and others went away to return with family and friends.

Rewired Africa Update Chris Chester Having time to sit back and reflect on the work we have done in Zambia earlier in the summer has given me a number of things to be thankful for: Being able to spend time with

such a wonderful group of people

Seeing the delight on the faces of the children when they see us turn up with computers for their school and then being mobbed by them

Overwhelmed by the never ending faith that they have and show even in their situations when many of us would just give up

Hearing the stories of the boys and girls who have been rescued from living on the streets taking drugs and the care and unbelievable passion of Vasco and the Footprints team who build relationships before trying to reintegrate them to their families

When visiting the Holy Cross School with some computers the

children had written a poem as a thank you: “Without the computers you wouldn’t be here so thanks to you for being here Supporting the school and us too. We are grateful for the computers, we type, we write and learn more technology On behalf of the school I say thank you, the pupils are learning more thanks to you. A really big thank you to you from us.” The work we do installing computers only scratches the surface but by working with the starfish principal we do make a difference to these children one

by one. We have now installed over 400 computers into the schools that really need them, and would never be able to get computers otherwise and educated almost 100 IT teachers. Looking forward, 2020 brings us a new challenge as we start and prepare for our biggest project yet in Zimbabwe. Sadly, we will not be taking a team to Zambia in 2020 for the first time in 10 years.

Zimbabwe can be described as a country of contrasts; a land of outstanding natural beauty and a people of faith, yet a nation in need of support particularly at this time. The infrastructure here has not kept pace with the growing population, leaving children in overcrowded classrooms,

attending school in shifts, or not going at all. Mission Direct have been working in Mutare in the Eastern Highlands on the border with Mozambique for a number of years. Continuing on from the building program at Joshua Dhube School - where 400+ students currently go to learn. Mission Direct began building classrooms here in 2012 and 2020 will see a further two built, giving 80+ further children access to education. For many, the school is their lifeline, representing a place of safety, love and hope – and there are so many more children desperate to be there. Help us to give the gift of education. Rewired Africa has been tasked by Mission Direct to provide up to 50 laptops into the school plus more to be provided to a mobile IT unit who visit schools to carry out the IT lessons which are required as part of the curriculum. We will be collaborating with Garikai who runs the mobile IT unit whom we met a couple of years ago when Janet, Becky and I visited. Garikai has a real passion for IT and works with a small team of other teachers giving them the opportunities to visit multiple schools at the same time – the

limiting factor is the shortage of equipment. The team will leave for Zimbabwe on Saturday 15th August 2020 so we have a very tight timeline to get everything ready in time. Mission Direct have

approached a trust to fund the installation of a solar power solution which needs to be secure

We are having a computer store room, actually part of the strong room, configured with shelving and power sockets so that the laptops can be recharged when not in use

One of the classrooms is being reused as the IT lab so new benches and power supplies need to be installed

We would be looking to install a projector and screen for them too

All I have to do is source 60 to 70 laptops and have them cleaned and rebuilt with the right set of software for Zimbabwe.

Dear praying friends Thank you! You are always in my thoughts, we are grateful that you are standing with us and backing us up. Following on from the last prayer request: Wowie: His Mom has visited LAMA House and he went to visit her. Wowie wants to be with her, but she seems unsure, so this decision is on hold until we can be sure there are supports in place. Several praying friends have said they are praying that the local church will take Wowie's family on and provide all the help they need. This is how I am praying too. Noel: His adoption is going through quickly. Shortly he will come to Manila for a medical at St Luke's Hospital and then have his Visa interview. He is doing great in school and at LAMA House has made unbelievable progress.

RRCY - much praise and thanks to God for what He is doing at the detention centre. Every week Michael and Simon have great stories to tell of boys asking for prayer, asking to be baptised, praising so loud that the guards take notice. This is the best church we have ever been a part of! Church: ALIVE Church in the city is not growing in numbers as we had expected, pray Pastor Andrew would know how God is leading with church in the city. We hope to reach the 100's of students in the city. Michael and Simon's vision for a youth cafe is also on hold as they are so busy with LAMA House full time, ALIVE church, and the detention centre as well as Michaels own family and school runs from one end of the city to the other every day. Team: Our team is tired. Rainy season always brings disease with it, dengue fever particularly

nasty. Colds and flu have gone around several times. Charis, our house mother has been very sick but is now recovering through diet - pray for her and her children, also sickly. Simon has not been sleeping but is still working full-time. He needs prayer for this. Peter also feels ill with high blood sugar, cholesterol and blood pressure. And Sam struggling with back pain. Lineth: Our new Social Worker is a great blessing. Praise God for bringing her to LAMA! We have just finished final paperwork for Accreditation and should receive our Certificate soon. Pray: Ivan and Jitels grandma will soon be approved as a foster parent for them. Pray: Nicole and Nikka's Uncle will be able to help them, and Kevin's Uncle will be able to help him. Pray: For Ana in Medical School - she has survived the first month, full on study and very overwhelming. Thank God my health is good, even in polluted Manila! I did a bit of research about the area where we live near Chinatown. A Canadian Episcopal missionary was assigned here 1891 before the war. Amazing what he achieved - the fruit can be seen today - though he probably died

thinking he and his missionaries had failed. He managed to raise funds just before war broke out and had built a large school here for Chinese girls, the only one. The building was just finished when the Japanese invaded and took it, demolished it and missionaries became POW's. But today...everything he put his hand to is now prospering - the best hospital in the country, best Chinese school, an Episcopalian church that is thriving, churches and schools in the mountains and even a hospital in Zamboanga. Down through the generations we see whole families now committed to serving Christ here, other schools and churches have sprung up. The hospital where Ana is training is one of them. The hospital where Noel will go for his medical is the first he built. His name was Charles Brent, the School St Stephens Christian High School and the hospital St. Luke’s, Quezon City. You might like to read Wikipedia about it all! While researching this I came across a band of praying women in America called the Women's Foreign Missionary Society of the Methodist Episcopalian Church. I read their Annual Report for 1940. They were a force to be reckoned with, with missionaries, schools, hospitals in Korea, Japan, Philippines, India, China, Africa and Malay. The hospital

they built is still operating here in Manila. Most of their missionaries were women, they died in their twenties and thirties. This is what they said, "We endeavour to match with corresponding courage and sacrifice the heroism and suffering of those who work under privation and difficulty, or who see the work of their lifetime in apparent eclipse - that we assume with gladness whatever additional share of support may develop on us - that

Christianity may continue to shed its light in far places." I mention all that because it reminded me of the ladies at St. Luke’s and St. Leonard's, I remember my first meeting with Beryl and Doreen, Sue and Heather and others who with all their heart have stood in prayer and support for missions You, too, are such a force to be reckoned with and you cannot imagine the fruit of your prayers and enthusiasm! A huge thank you!

From Mark Gill in Pakistan

Ali has been with me for a month now so I have 'dragged myself' away from work to see a few sights while she is here. Today we visited St Patrick's RC Cathedral in Karachi. Built in local sandstone with a red corrugated steel roof, it has two small spires on the Western facade not dissimilar from minarets. Looking somewhat culturally appropriate yet clearly different and Christian, it has been subject to some recent traumas whence ac-cess is now restricted to worshippers. It's was interesting to see and be greeted with a fence and gates embellished with shamrocks - suitably appropriate for us! This reminded me of Paul's approach to cultural difference, trying to fit in and make connections with people in order to share the love of Jesus. I hope and pray we can follow this example to reach out in small ways to build the Kingdom.

On 3 September 10 Downing Street announced that the suffragan Bishop of Lewes, Richard Jackson, is to be the 106th Bishop of Hereford. Bishop Richard has spent his entire ministry in the Diocese of Chichester and so the move to his new diocese will be a huge change: “I am immensely humbled to have been chosen to become the next Bishop of Hereford. This beautiful diocese is in my DNA. I’ve traced my family tree and if I took a journey visiting churches from Leominster to the Welsh Border, I would be able to see the graves of my ancestors dating back to the 13th Century. “After 25 years serving in the Diocese of Chichester it will be very hard to leave such a

beautiful place and the family of Christians I know and love well. Chichester Diocese is at an exciting phase in its life with great potential for future growth in knowing, loving and following Jesus.” The Bishop of Chichester, Dr Martin Warner, issued the following statement: “In his time as Bishop of Lewes, Richard and Deborah (his wife) have exercised an exceptionally generous ministry of hospitality – an outward expression of their pastoral and spiritual care for those with whom they share the Christian life. At the same time Richard has been imaginatively and generously engaged in turning our attention to the evangelistic and missional aspects of our vocation as a household of faith. He has encouraged this engagement across the whole spectrum of the diocese and done so with kindness, humour and flair”. Bishop Richard’s new Diocese, Hereford is mainly rural, covering Herefordshire, the south of Shropshire, a portion of Worcestershire and several parishes in Wales on the English-Welsh border.
