Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Prayer is our focus this weekend. In the Gospel, Jesus gives his disciples, and us, the Lord’s Prayer, which we have cherished through the centuries. The first two words encompass much about our faith—unity among all Christians (Our), and a sense that we are in a deeply bonded relationship with God (Father).

In Genesis, we see Abraham in conversational prayer, in his creaturely humility before his Creator, seeking mercy and compassion for the innocent. The psalm is a lyrical prayer of thanksgiving and praise for the God who answered the sincere prayers of a people who had called out for help, showing them mercy. In Luke’s Gospel, the disciples want to pray like Jesus, with the same intimacy—to experience God as Abba in the depths of their being.

Do we try to talk to God? Do we listen for answers? This relationship is always a work in progress.

LIFE’S PERSISTENT QUESTIONS Most of us can probably imagine (or remember) the delightful questions a young child might ask with innocence and curiosity. “What is air?” “How does a bird fly?” Answers are often met with another question: “Why?” No answer to that question is ever adequate, and so the child persists in asking—“Why? Why? Why??” A quest for knowledge? Of course, but the child’s persistence can only flourish in a relationship of trust. These conversations between the child and, typically, an older relative have the power to deepen confidence and intimacy.

How like prayer this is! Humans are frail. We have questions, fears, needs. And so we pray—but how? How do we speak or relate at all to the Lord of endless life, the God of our salvation?

OUR ABBA Today’s scriptures provide some answers. We discover that, like Abraham in Genesis and Jesus in Luke’s Gospel, it’s all about relationship.

In Genesis, the Israelites were still trying to learn who this Creator God was and what was the nature of the relationship between the divine and the human. Today we find Abraham in “conversation” with God, who is contemplating the ruin of the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah because of their evil behavior. The intimacy of Abraham’s relationship with God allows him to plead for the innocent, to negotiate with God about the intended destruction.

The disciples experience Jesus in deep prayer. Asked to teach them how to pray, Jesus gives them his own prayer to the God he knows as Abba. The Lord’s Prayer, slightly different in Luke’s Gospel, contains elements that would be familiar to the disciples. But calling God “Father” was deeply intimate and probably somewhat startling.

This is the kind of prayer to which we are called. Jesus teaches us that we, his sisters and brothers, can call God “Our Father.” How powerful these two words are when we pray them together! -Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Dear St. Justin Parish and School families,

The St. Justin Thrift Store has served as a ministry to our parish, school and Santa Clara community for over 60 years. It is with regret that I must inform you that the St. Justin Thrift Store will be closing its doors on September 30, 2019. I know this announcement may come as a surprise to many of you, but like most small businesses, the cost of doing business has increased to a point that is no longer financially viable to continue to run the Thrift Store.

As of August 31st, we will no longer be accepting donations. There are several good places in Santa Clara to take your donations to including: The Goodwill Store 2800 El Camino Real Santa Clara, CA 95051 **Donation Hours** 9 - 7p.m. Mon-Sat, 9 - 6 p.m. Sunday

We will be liquidating our entire inventory, including the fixtures

(glass cases, hanging racks) and holding a clearance sale during the month of September. On September 30, 2019 we will close our doors for the last time. Please watch the bulletin and the Thrift Store “white board” for detailed sale information. In order to continue our ministry to those in need in our community, we are working with Community Ministry to continue the voucher and medical equipment programs. Mr. Bauer will be sending out more information regarding these two programs in the next few weeks. Lastly, we would like to express our heartfelt thanks to everyone who supported our Thrift Store throughout the years. relationship with Christ.

Ongoing Faith Formation Program will Resume in September!

These classes meet on Sunday morning. Registration forms will be available at st-justin.org or in the Parish Office. We will mail out registration forms for returning families in August.

Sacramental Preparation Program First Reconciliation and First Eucharist

You may register for this program if your child has already completed one year of Ongoing Faith Formation or is enrolled in a Catholic school. This program is for baptized children in 2nd grade and higher. Registration begins in August and is supplemental to Ongoing Faith Formation.

High School Confirmation Program

This program begins in September and culminates with the Sacrament of Confirmation in May. The candidate sessions take place on Sundays, 5:30-7:00 p.m. Registration begins in August and is limited to 22 students.

RCIA (adapted for children) If your child is seven years or older and unbaptized, we provide the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults adapted for children. Please contact Mary Kane at [email protected] for more information.

CLOW (Children’s Liturgy of the Word) During the 9 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Sunday Masses, children are dismissed to the Parish Ministry Center Chapel for an age appropriate Liturgy of the Word. The children return to church during the Presentation of the Gifts.

Our next meeting is Tuesday, August 20th at 6:30-8:30pm in

the PMC. Come with any questions that you may have about faith, religion, and the

Catholic Church. This program is for adults who are seeking baptism, or were baptized

Catholic but have not celebrated the sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist. This is a process marked by liturgical rites that are celebrated with the community. This process is centered on the Sunday readings and includes

Outreach Dinner Our next Outreach Dinner will be taking place Sunday, August 18th beginning at 1:30 p.m. in our Parish Small Hall. All Senior Citizen members of our parish are invited, along with a guest, to this meal followed by BINGO.

Financial Assistance for Parishioners St. Justin Community Ministry has set aside some funds to provide Parishioners with limited Financial Assistance when facing unexpected issues. If you find yourself in need, contact Joe Bauer via email at [email protected] or at 408-296-1193 extension 109.

Food & Diaper Collection Most of you are aware of the Community Ministry Collection Barrels that are located in our Church. During the month of August, we will continue to request canned Soup, Ravioli, Chili, Macaroni & Cheese and Tomato Sauce. We are also in need of size 5 and size 6 diapers. These are items that we do not receive often from the Second Harvest Food Bank. Please feel free to drop donations in the barrels in the Church, the barrel in the Foyer of the School or bring items to the Parish Office.

Fresh Fruit and Vegetables needed For those of you who have back yard fruit trees with an over abundance of fruit and/or gardens with vegetables please consider donating what you can to Community Ministry. The fruit and vegetables are a welcome addition to the food that we distribute to those seeking assistance.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The pilgrim experience of going by foot to Santiago de Compostella, the shrine of St. James, reached its high point this week at the feast of the Apostle, with tens of thousands of pilgrims on the road. Typically, they cover twelve to twenty miles a day through rough territory. The difficult journey and the often primitive lodging facilities are made bearable by the joy of the pilgrims, their songs and prayers. When their journey is documented properly, they receive the scallop shell, a reminder not only of James the fisherman, but also his call to fish for human beings and to baptize the nations. In the Middle Ages, those who wore this badge on their hats were granted lodging and hospitality wherever they went. Next to the palm, the sign of a Jerusalem pilgrim, the scallop shell was most highly prized. In the Middle Ages, some people so enjoyed the pilgrim road, although it was filled with discomfort and danger, that they spent most of their lives on the road. Today, some people take up the route for exercise, but are drawn gradually into the spirituality of the journey. As you make your summer travels, always fold in an element of pilgrimage: a long walk through beautiful countryside, a visit to a church, a prayer of gratitude for your journey through life’s hills and valleys.

The Knights of Columbus, Fr. Joseph Geary Council 3523 of St. Justin parish will be having their annual picnic. We invite all parishioners, Knights and their families & friends to the picnic on Sunday, July 28th
