“The Truth will set you free”

COORDINATING PRINCIPAL’S REPORT OVERCOMING OBSTACLES I listened to a podcast recently by Jonathan Doyle which explained how overcoming obstacles is crucial to building a successful life. He argues that we should not view obstacles as a source of despair but rather an invitation to grow. Overcoming obstacles successfully involves using a technique he calls ‘reframing’. Reframing is a psychological term which involves changing our thinking and behaviour from a negative to a positive. He suggests we view obstacles as friends rather than a source of despair. That is a “cognitive refrain”. The reality is that obstacles in our life are unavoidable. Our success and growth as a person largely depends on how well we overcome these challenges be they health, relationship, career, school or anything else. When we reframe our thinking about any obstacle and see it as an opportunity to grow we are likely to thrive. Success and happiness does not depend on avoiding obstacles but rather on using them as a friend and a teacher. It may not be easy but it is well worth the effort. Mr Jim O’Brien Coordinating Principal

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Graduation Ceremony

On Monday evening St Joseph’s Regional College welcomed Year 12 graduands, parents, friends and staff to our 3rd annual Graduation Evening in this most important Centenary Year of St Agnes’ Parish.

Senior Coordinator Ms Flanagan, Mrs Eichmann, Mr O’Brien and I welcomed our official guests who included: Fr. Donnelly (Parish Priest), Fr. James Forster (College Chaplain), Mr John McQueen (Parish Director of Education), Mrs Anne O’Brien (Leader of School Evangelisation & Catechetical Services Consultant and Foundational Principal of St Joseph’s Regional College), and Mr John Hassett (Former Year Coordinator of this fine group of students).

This was a great milestone in the lives of our senior students and the College community as this was the last cohort of students to commence their education at the Warlters St. site. They have responsibly carried across and embedded many of the traditions of our history. They are to be congratulated for the great job they have done in this regard.

This is also a great occasion for the parents. No doubt their feelings would have been somewhat mixed given the HSC examinations coming to an end, and for many families their journey with the College. Special recognition also goes to parents who assisted on the Graduation Committee. The Panthers Auditorium looked stunning.

Finally, having sixty of St Joseph’s Regional College staff attend on the evening says something about the regard the class of 2013 have within our community. We are fortunate to have such a supportive staff to attend such evenings.

Thank you to all staff and parents who went to a lot of effort to make the evening such a success. My special thanks goes to Ms Flanagan (pictured) who has done a fantastic job leading this group of young people.

Display Night On Wednesday evening the College community joined to celebrate learning of our Years 7 to 10 students in Creative Arts and Technology and Applied Studies. I was very impressed by the calibre of students’ work in all learning areas. I would particularly like to thank Mr Phil Pares (TAS) and Mrs Claudette Stace (Creative Arts) for their wonderful effort in preparing the evening with their respective teaching teams. Thank you also to Mrs Denise Bignell (Choir) and Mrs Sharon Green (Band) for their special additional contributions. In addition, I would like to thank all staff for their tremendous support. This says something about the spirit and generosity of St Joseph’s Regional staff. On the evening Mrs Eichmann and I also welcomed Year 6 students from Wauchope Public Primary School who were unable to attend our initial orientation day. These families were made very welcome and were very impressed by the evening. Thank you also to our families who give so much support to our educational endeavour at St Joseph’s Regional College.

COLLEGE PRINCIPAL AWARDS

Congratulations to the following students who received Coordinating Principals awards this week. Each of these students benefited from eating a healthy morning tea and sharing ideas with Mr O’Brien.

YEAR 7 2013 ORIENTATION DAY Last Friday, 225 Year 7 2014 students were welcomed to the College for their Orientation Day. END OF YEAR PROGRAM Year 7-11 Exams In an effort to keep students engaged in learning for a greater proportion of Term 4, Semester 2, Year 7-11 examinations are being conducted from Wednesday, 4th December (Week 9) to Tuesday, 10th December (Week 10) for Years 7-10 while Year 11 exams will continue to Friday, 13th December. Having the exams later in the term has proven to be very successful as students were on task for longer and we made best use of the teaching and learning time in Term 4. Post-Exam Student Leave From Wednesday, 11th December to Friday, 13th December three Post-Exam Student Leave non-class days for students have been scheduled to enable staff to complete marking, collate marks, prepare reports and awards. FROM THE LEADER OF CATECHESIS AND SCHOOL EVANGELISATION CARITAS AUSTRALIA TYPHOON HAIYAN APPEAL Our students have generously responded to the Philippines humanitarian disaster. Caritas Australia has launched the Typhoon Haiyan Appeal so that Caritas and its partners can continue to provide the emergency relief to these people so desperately in need. Emergency assistance is urgently needed across the region to help with the significant needs for shelter, food and water and then with rebuilding communities and livelihoods. Mrs Eichmann and Mrs Prior’s RE classes have initiated a fund raising idea to assist with this appeal. They are selling paper water bottles which are displayed in the canteen area. This is a great initiative and a true display of solidarity. FESTA CHRISTI “ Go and make disciples of all nations” Last week, the following students represented our school community at Festa Christi, a diocesan gathering to explore and celebrate their faith: Sheree Manns, Kiara Sutherland, Millie Sarks, Riley Eichmann, Katherine Martin, Mary Shelley, Gus McPhail, Jarrod Stewart Lachlan Hughes, Connor Tambly and Kaes Bessling . Mr Blackman, Jasmine Ryan and Erin Badewitz as a group leader accompanied the students to Coffs Harbour. The students were involved in a variety of activities and had the opportunity to meet students from the other secondary schools in our diocese. Students were involved in planning and preparing a closing liturgy. The theme of the gathering was, “Go and make disciples of all nations.” and the students were challenged to find ways they can be disciples in the community. The students were wonderful ambassadors for our school community. Christmas Hampers The Pastoral Care classes are busy preparing the Christmas Hampers for St Agnes’ Parish. Thank you for everyone’s generosity particularly at this time of the year. The parish is looking after 200 families in our Port Macquarie community so there are many families in need. Nora Swain Leader of Catechesis and School Evangelisation

Super Typhoon Haiyan

Super Typhoon Haiyan has caused widespread devastation in the Philippines and caused significant damage in Vietnam and China. Over 12 million people are now in need of emergency aid relief, with the areas hardest hit having no water, no food and no electricity.

Thanks to the excellent response from students, the SRC is proud to donate $1000 to Caritas International to help support the aide response. A great deal of this money was raised at a student-run sausage sizzle, which was inspired by students wanting to do something to help. Half of the money raised from the sausage sizzle will be used locally, donated to help support Callum Cordell and his family as they deal with his illnesses – another cause brought to the attention of the SRC by students who simply wanted to help.

A very big thank you to Mrs Carol Avery for her consistent hard work behind the scenes (without which very little would happen) and to those students who pitched in and helped sell sausages and drinks (names below). Finally we say a huge thank you to the students of St Joseph’s Regional College: for your willingness to make these fundraising events happen and your great generosity.

Thank you to team sausage: Tahnee Borg, Joseph Phillips, Michelle Border, Malachi Gooding, Sam Turner, Hannah Vogel, Claire Rocuet, Lainey Harrison, Seanna Barr, Will Farlow, Karla Martin.

Mr Daniel O’Mullane SRC Coordinator

Philosophers

Last Thursday and Friday, saw the culmination of a lot of hard work from a talented group of Year 9 Philosophers.

I had the pleasure to be able to accompany two teams to the annual Northern NSW Philosothon in Coffs Harbour. This is a philosophy competition where students are provided with areas of inquiry and then have the opportunity to discuss their thoughts and ideas about these areas. Some of the topics the students had to discuss included "Is it our duty to give charity?" "Should you always listen to the opinions of others?" and "The Human Species in 2013".

The students represented the school in an exemplary manner demonstrating enthusiasm, respect and thought provoking ideas.

A special mention goes to Josie Walker who was awarded the Junior Philosophers Philosopher Award.

The students who took part in the Philosothon were Josie Walker, Sianna Madigan, Joelle Doust, Alyssa-Clare Ellis, Emily Sheridan, Nick Williams, Matthew Le and Olivia Groth.
