MESSAGE FROM FR. DONNELLY

NEW PRINCIPAL FOR MACKILLOP COLLEGE After an extensive recruitment process, I am pleased to announce that Mrs Anne O’Brien is the new Principal of MacKillop College, incorporating St Paul’s Campus. Anne has worked tirelessly in education in the Parish for many years. As Principal of St Joseph’s Regional College, Anne played a significant role in establishing the new school at Sovereign Hills. During that time, Anne established herself as a dedicated and professional leader in Catholic education. Anne’s ability to work collaboratively with Jim O’Brien, her leadership team and a very enthusiastic staff, contributed to a very successful start for the new College. For the past two years, Anne has been a consultant for the Lismore Catholic Schools Office in the area of School Evangelisation and Catechetical Services. Anne brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to this new position and I am sure you will join me in congratulating Anne and welcome her back to our family of Parish schools. Fr L. F Donnelly Parish Priest

Message from Director of Catholic Schools – David Condon

COORDINATING PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

HAPPY FATHER’S DAY Father’s Day certainly has a commercial focus but I am sure that most dads don’t want more ‘stuff’. The day provides children with a great opportunity to express their gratitude to their fathers. This can be done in a variety of ways without spending a lot of money on gifts. A card, a special note, a poem, a promise to assist with chores, an invitation to spend time with you and so on can have much more meaning than an expensive gift. We do not need to refer to the mountains of research which show the important impact that fathers have on their sons and daughters. We all know that affectionate, supportive and hands-on dads contribute greatly to children’s social, emotional, cognitive and spiritual development. When Barack Obama delivered his Father’s Day speech a couple of years ago, he spoke of the critical role that fathers play. “They are teachers and coaches. They are mentors and role models. They are examples of success and the men who constantly push us towards it” he said. My very best wishes to all fathers on your special day! Mr Jim O’Brien Coordinating Principal

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE I am continually impressed with the number of students who receive College Principal Awards. Congratulations to the following students whose efforts were rewarded at this week’s assembly.

Congratulations also to Lauren Brown who received a Coordinating Principal Award, Lauren’s award will be recognised in next week’s newsletter.

Congratulations to Mrs Anne O’Brien

On behalf of the College community, I would like to echo Fr Donnelly’s words and congratulate Mrs Anne O’Brien (Foundational Principal of St Joseph’s Regional College) on her recent appointment to the Principalship of MacKillop College - incorporating St Paul’s Campus - (Years 7-12). The St Joseph’s Regional College community looks forward to working with Anne in the ongoing promotion of the St Agnes’ Parish Secondary School endeavour in the Hastings region.

Professional Learning Team Success

Last week our Leader of Evangelisation and Catechesis, Ms Nora Swain accepted the Diocesan Excellence in Catholic Education Award (Professional Learning Team) on behalf of her faculty. This is a very coveted award that recognizes a team of professionals at the very forefront of educational innovation.

The Team comprises:

Ms Helen Gilbert (Assistant Leader of Evangelisation), Ms Sonia West, Mr Sean Jennings, Mr Phil Shelley, Mr Gordon West, Mr Gerard Toohey, Mrs Nicole Prior, Mr Micheal Morson, Mr Frank Johnstone, Mr Adrian Ryan, Mr Paul Redfern, Ms Hannah O’Brien, Ms Kay Curran and Mr Richard Battinson.

The innovation and creativity of the Evangelisation/Catechesis PLT is in no small part attributable to Nora Swain. Nora has engaged the team on a very deep level due to her own commitment to the process of authentically transforming the RE faculty into a dynamic PLT. Nora’s dedication to this process is reflected in her dedication to our pursuing Gospel Values; stressing the importance of our Sacramental journey and nurturing our ongoing relationship with Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Recently our College Chaplain, Fr James Forster, commented that, “it stands to reason, that all of the good work done at St Joseph’s Regional College in the areas of Evangelisation and Catechesis, is intrinsically based on the dynamic leadership of Nora Swain and the excellent learning focus within her faculty.”

Year 10 and 12 Students Departing from the College

I would like to remind parents that it is imperative that accounts for students of Year 10 and 12 be finalised prior to departure.

I am very conscious of avoiding any embarrassing moments for families, and ask if you are in a situation where you cannot pay an account, then it is important for you to contact me to make an alternative arrangement.

Our College fees form an integral part in our Catholic Education endeavour. Every one of your sons and daughters are precious to us and we are humbled that you have entrusted their education to the College.

Thank you for your ongoing support and the evident sacrifices you make in what is the most important investment in your lives as parents.

God Bless

Jim Dempsey College Principal

NEWS FROM OUR LEADER OF CATECHESIS AND EVANGELISATION VINNIES SLEEPOUT On Friday, 29th August St Joseph's Regional College hosted the St Agnes’ Parish Vinnies School Sleepout. The aim of this event was to raise awareness about homelessness and to help raise funds to assist with supporting those who are homeless and to stop the cycle of homelessness. It was a huge success with the attendance of around 65 students and around $1000 was raised to help Vinnies conquer homelessness. Thank you to Ken Little's who donated fruit and Bakers Delight who donated bread and to everyone who showed their support.

PRAYER SPONSORS FOR HSC STUDENTS A prayer sponsor is someone who prays for another person with a specific intention in mind and at a specific time. A strong aspect of our Catholic Faith is our belief in the power of prayer. Our Year 12 students are in need of prayers at this time, as they journey through this challenging time of their HSC exams. If you are interested in being a Prayer Sponsor for one of our Year 12 students please phone the school office. We will then pass on to you the name of one of our students and the date and time of their exams. Thank you Proclaim Lismore Parents 2014 In the latest edition of the Proclaim Lismore Parents e-bulletin, we ask the question: what does it look like when parents, teachers and the parish work together to create an environment that fosters collaboration, communication and community? We take a closer look at parent-teacher partnership in one of our schools: St Joseph's Primary School, Maclean. Please ensure you register your interest in attending the Proclaim Parent Gatherings 2014 which will be held over six separate days across the Diocese of Lismore in October (numbers are limited). Proclaim Lismore 2014 is an unprecedented opportunity to join with us as partners in co-designing an even stronger and more effective Catholic schooling for each child. Please visit the Proclaim Lismore website to find out more: www.proclaimlismore.com.au or subscribe to our monthly e-bulletins by emailing [email protected]. LITERACY & NUMERACY WEEK

Last week was National Literacy and Numeracy week NUMERACY ACTIVITY Our Pastoral Care classes competed in a Jelly Bean Competition. The students had to use their mathematical knowledge as a team to estimate the number of jelly beans in the jar. As the week progressed more information was released and the pastoral care classes could change their estimates/calculations. Congratulations to Mr Kim Eichmann’s PC for winning the jelly beans. The correct answer was 1166, Oxley 7 were only 72 off the mark.

LITERACY ACTIVITIES Literacy Week was acknowledged a week late due to the weather but the 'Word Fairies' have had a great time chalking quotes from their favourite books and poems on the pavement around the school. It's been lovely to see a Shakespearean quote or a line from modern literature take an unsuspecting student (and staff member!) by surprise and be delighted by the wonder of beautiful words.

Some of our 'Word Fairies' have include Lauren Heugh, Georgia Hickling, Matthew Cramp, Courtney Newell, Zoe Esplin, Sam Hoogenboom, Issac Sanderson, Maddi Wooton, Ryan Bertie, Molly Ware, Jamie Henry, Kate Morgan Floyd, and Macualie Gardner. Thank you to Mrs McKee for leading this initiative and to Mrs Bale for organising the ‘Who’s Reading What’ in the library. Watch this space next week to see who won that competition.

COMMUNITY NEWS

Seasons for Growth for Parents:

Supporting your child following separation

and divorce

Parent Invitation

In partnership with Good Grief and the Diocese of Lismore, Parent Assembly are offering Seasons for Growth for Parents: Supporting your child following separation or divorce this term in our schools.

For a long time our Diocesan Schools have offered the highly successful Seasons for Growth® program for children and young people. For many years, parents whose children have participated in the Seasons for Growth® Young People’s Program have been asking, ‘Is there a program that can help parents, too’?

Seasons for Growth for Parents has been developed to meet this need. The program provides an opportunity for you to reflect on the experience of separation and divorce from your child’s perspective, and to explore ideas and strategies that might help you support your child/ren through the changes happening in your family.

Seasons for Growth for Parents: Supporting your child following separation or divorce is a small group program for 5-10 parents. It can be held over 2 x 2 hour sessions or 4 x 1 hour sessions and is for parents only. The date and times are dependent on the availability of the group. Cost: free of charge

Some feedback from our last group –

“Being with others and listening to their experiences caused me to realise I’m not going through such a hard time. Visual aids, colour and modules very helpful”

“Identifying the different emotions and stages that both the parent and child go through and how to cope with each stage and what you can expect. “

“Learning about the progression through the process – the”Season’s” and knowing where I am now and that things will improve. Also learning that the cycle can repeat.”

For more information or to express your interest in being a part of the Seasons for Growth for Parents program this term, please contact Peta Rourke – 0400 420 614 or [email protected]

BEGINNING EXPERIENCE WEEKEND 17th - 19th October 2014 The Beginning Experience is a weekend program designed to help divorced, separated or widowed people make a new beginning in life. The weekend is neither counselling nor therapy; rather it is an invitation to self-encounter and growth. The program consists of presentation, written reflection and small group dialogue. Participants get to understand the grief process and are supported in resolving the grief that accompanies the end of a marriage, benefiting enormously the children, society and community. Whilst the Beginning Experience (BE) program was designed for and by Catholics, all faiths are welcome. Since its introduction into the Lismore Diocese over eighteen years ago the BE program has benefited hundreds. The gains from this non-profit Ministry will have positive effects on the sole parent and consequently their offspring attending your school. The BEGINNING EXPERIENCE: A personal encounter weekend for those who are grieving the loss of a spouse/partner through separation, divorce or death will be held from 17th- 19th October, 2014 at “Arabella Garden Inn Motel” in Wollongbar. It offers participants the opportunity to turn the pain of loss into growth. Bookings are essential and applications close on 3rd October 2014. For further details call Judy 66241549, Jan 6624 5175 or 0437 112031. or visit our website: www.belismore.org.au for more information.

The Year 7/8 team had one win, the Year 9/10 team had three wins and a draw and the Year 11/12 team had one win and a draw. Congratulations to all the girls who played great netball and sportsmanship on the day.
