COORDINATING PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

OUTSTANDING HSC RESULTS Both MacKillop Senior College and St Joseph’s Regional College had very pleasing HSC results again in 2012. The top Australian Tertiary Entrance Ranks (ATARs) were 99.80 for Kirsten Gan at MacKillop and 99.15 for Zac Murphy at St Joseph’s Regional College. There were many great results in individual subjects including 5th in the State for Modern History (Kirsten Gan), 6th in Biology (Mitchell Hickson), 8th in Design & Technology (Brittany Fletcher) and 18th in Standard English (Jessica Genders). Madison Cutmore, Kirsten Gan, Lara Nest and Dominica Roebuck were among the State All Rounders by achieving over 90% and Band 6 in ten or more units. In subjects with a practical component, students also excelled. We have students represented in ArtExpress, OnStage, DesignTech, InTech and Encore. While students at Newman Senior Technical College do the NSW Higher School Certificate they do not do a pattern of study that allows them to apply for an ATAR. This does not rule out the prospect of students doing further tertiary study. By achieving good results in HSC English and Mathematics as well as in their Vocational Education course, fifteen of the 2012 cohort gained entry to university. Congratulations to our ex-students on their outstanding results and to their hardworking, dedicated teachers who helped them along the way. HAVE A GOOD YEAR I must congratulate students and staff on a very positive start to the 2013 school year.

Michael Herbert, the author of the weekly publication ‘Vital’, makes the point that each year presents a mixture of joys and challenges. Our success and happiness should not depend only on what happens to us but rather how we react to the things that happen to us. He gives the following advice which is equally applicable to students and adults.

1. Keep Cool Make it a goal to keep a clear head under pressure. He reminds us of the Chinese proverb; “If you are patient in one moment of anger, you will escape one hundred days of sorrow”. St Paul reminds us in Corinthians 12 that “Love is patient and kind”.

2. Know your boundaries and stick to them. Learn when to say “Yes” and when to say “I need help” without fear or guilt. If we manage our boundaries we will also manage our wellbeing.

3. Build relationships. The new year is a good time to make a renewed effort to build positive relationships. If we make the effort to reach out to others it will help build our confidence and self-esteem.

4. Avoid negative thinking Positive thoughts lead to positive outcomes. Ultimately we can choose to either make the best of a bad situation or to turn it into a catastrophe.

5. Be sensitive but not overly sensitive. It is important to be sensitive to the needs of others but destructive to worry overly about what others think of us or how they behave towards us. Their problem can easily become our problem if we allow it.

My best wishes to all for a happy and successful 2013.

LENT Lent begins with Ash Wednesday on 13th February. During the forty days leading up to Easter, Christians are encouraged to prepare for the anniversary of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ by prayer and penance. The Church no longer imposes a strict fast but encourages us to abstain from eating meat on the Fridays of Lent and on Good Friday. On Ash Wednesday students will be attending a liturgy to focus their attention on this season of preparation for Easter. The Ceremony of Ashes is an ancient custom. During the Ash Wednesday liturgy, ashes (from the burnt palms of the previous Palm Sunday) are placed on the forehead in the form of a cross while the celebrant says: “Turn away from sin and be faithful to the Gospel”. The challenge for each of us during the forty days of Lent is to become better people by living lives based on the great values that Jesus taught. This year we are especially focusing on three – justice, love and humility. That is the challenge inherent in our theme “Act justly, love tenderly and walk humbly with your God” Micah 6:8. Mr Jim O’Brien Coordinating Principal

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

SOME REFLECTIONS (YEAR 11 INFORMATION NIGHT) Over the holiday break I listened to staff, ex-students and members of the wider St Joseph’s community talk about this great school. People spoke of the College with a great sense of pride for its service to educating young people throughout the region. In particular, two ex-students asked whether certain staff members still taught at the Regional, intimating that these teachers had “made all the difference” in their lives. Aside from responding that these staff members were still among us, these statements reminded me of the tremendous privilege it is to play a role in the formation of so many young people’s lives.

More recently, I have reflected on this New Year of Faith and our School theme to “Act justly, love tenderly and humbly walk with your God ” … and how this relates to my understanding of the strong sense of tradition at St Joseph’s Regional College. Indeed I witnessed some living examples of these works when Mr Bruce Smith (Year 11 Coordinator), Mr Ian Lutton (Leader of Curriculum) facilitated our annual Year 11 Orientation Evening. They were assisted by our Trainees (and graduates of St Joseph’s) Zac Murphy and Aimee Gardner who also reflected on their experiences in the Senior School. In addition, our Key Learning Area Coordinators attended the evening for conversation and supper with our Year 11 parents. In the very short time I have been here, I have already identified the hallmarks of a highly effective Catholic School. Clearly, staff’s ongoing commitment to developing Professional Learning Teams in the school this year is one that requires much professional acumen, personal mastery, energy and trust in one another. It is my hope that we will not only encourage our students to aspire to excellence, but also for many to discover a level of achievement that they did not initially envisage. In this respect there will be many intangibles for us to focus on along the way in terms of nurturing the spirits of our students and support parents who work in partnership to achieve we best we can for them. In the end, I would hope our young people are able to imagine a future world that perhaps we have not imagined … and may not see … as a result of them being with us. Indeed, I hope that it is our wish to see all of these young adults with their feet firmly planted on the ground as they leave St Joseph’s … armed with the discernment and sense of freedom not only to see Christ’s love in the faces of people they will meet, but also in themselves as they too encounter the challenges and joys that life brings.

Page 4: St Joseph's Regional College Newsletter 8th February 2013

I would also like to say a few words about the notion of the principalship at St Joseph’s. To be sure, there has been a great tradition of leadership in this school in its former principals. I hope that I can do the role justice …and if you think or feel I’m paddling in the wrong direction, please let me know. For at the end of the day the principalship in any Catholic school is a precious gift that is to be nurtured and respected by the person on which it has been bestowed. Similarly, I understand that as principal there will be times where I must invite criticism and welcome challenge for the sake of our faith community. For I understand that our students will not thrive academically, emotionally, socially and most importantly spiritually if our community does not authentically exist in a state of truth and freedom. So once again, thank you everybody for welcoming the Dempsey’s back home. Barb, myself and the boys are delighted to be back with family, friends and a wonderful Parish. I look forward to walking with you with a great sense of purpose in our endeavours to work mighty deeds with the students in our care. God Bless Jim Dempsey Principal

FROM THE CURRICULUM COORDINATOR

CURRICULUM Late last year the Curriculum team decided to bring the assessment procedures for Years 7-10 more broadly in line with those in Years 11-12. The aim is to ensure that students are more aware of the assessment procedures at the College and help them to minimise the chance of losing marks from an assessment. A copy of these changes has been given to all students to paste in their diaries as well as being listed below. If you have any questions regarding assessment procedures here at the College please feel free to contact me during normal school hours. YEAR 11 PARENT FORUM A Year 11 parent has expressed an interest in starting a Year 11 parent forum, simply to get parents together semi-regularly to chat, share experiences, have coffee, socialise etc. If you are a year 11 parent and you are interested in being part of such a group could you please send an e-mail to Bruce Smith (Year 11 Coordinator) at [email protected] ASSESSMENT POLICY Assessment Tasks

In addition to homework and class tasks each subject conducts a minimum of four and a maximum of six assessment tasks over a twelve month course. Tasks include exams, research assignments, field studies, practical tasks, speeches etc. Each student will be given an overview of the tasks for the year and each tasks weighting early in Term 1. A term calendar will also be handed out the beginning of each term and added to the College Moodle page.

Penalties for Late Tasks

Years 7-10: If a student is absent on the day an exam or assessment task is held, or a task is due to be handed in, a phone call MUST be made to the class teacher, the College notified or electronically via the Moodle page . Failure to submit a task on its due date (and not notify the school) will result in a loss of marks according to the following: 30% of the maximum mark being deducted for the first day, 20% the second day, 20% the third day, 20% the fourth day and 10% on the fifth day. If a task has not been submitted after five days the student will receive zero for the task and an after school detention will be issued. The student will still have to complete the task/exam to a satisfactory standard to pass the course.

Page 5: St Joseph's Regional College Newsletter 8th February 2013

Years 11-12: If a student is absent on the day an exam or assessment task is held, or a task is due to be handed in, a phone call MUST be made to the Leader of Curriculum , and a doctor’s certificate must be provided. Failure to submit a task on its due date (and not notify the school/provide the doctor’s certificate) will result in a loss of marks according to the following: 30% of the maximum mark being deducted for the first day, 20% the second day, 20% the third day, 20% the fourth day and 10% on the fifth day. If a task has not been submitted after the five days the student will receive zero for the task and an after school detention will be issued. The student will still have to complete the task/exam to a satisfactory standard.

Planned Absences

If a student is aware he or she will be absent for an exam or when a task is due as a result of misadventure such as surgery, funerals, elite sporting commitments or other unavoidable circumstances students in Years 7-10 must phone their class teacher. Students in Years 11 – 12 must see the Leader of Curriculum to complete and submit a School Assessment Misadventure form.

EXAMINATION

Formal examinations are conducted at the end of semesters one and two. Specific details can be

found on the College Calendar and in the College diary.

The following examination rules need to be adhered to by all students:

1. Make sure you have all you require before you enter the exam room. Pencil cases, bags, and other books are not to be brought into the room and checks will be made on any paper brought in. You will not be allowed to borrow any equipment during the exam.

2. If you need an explanation for any part of the exam paper, you are not to call out but raise your hand and wait for the teacher.

3. You will not be allowed to leave the room, or move about within the room, once the exam has commenced (except in emergencies).

4. You must keep total silence for the duration of the exam. When you have finished your paper, place it face down on the desk and wait for instructions from the teacher, while still remaining in silence.

5. If there is cheating or plagiarism in an exam or assessment task: a) You will receive no marks for that particular exam or task. b) Your parents will be notified immediately and asked to attend the school for discussions concerning any possible further disciplinary action.

6. If a student misses an exam every effort will be made for the student to complete the exam on the day they return to school. In order to avoid penalty it is the students’ responsibility to see the Curriculum Coordinator on the day of his/her return prior to 8.45am to arrange a catch up time.

FROM THE RELIGIOUS EDUCATION COORDINATOR YEAR 7 RELIGIOUS EDUCATION This is an exciting time for the Year 7 students as they begin their journey into high school. The first unit in RE: Belonging to School and Church Communities should assist them with settling into our College community and St Agnes Parish. Parents can become familiar with the program by going to our Moodle site. The textbook is also available on the site. During this term we will also have a Year 7 Reflection Day and a Mass and community service day. For some parents, it’s a great opportunity to refresh our understanding of what it means to belong to St Agnes Parish and to look at our own faith commitment. We have available copies of a book called What Catholics Believe. If anyone is interested please call the school office. COMMUNITY SERVICE This year again we are encouraging students to participate in some type of community service throughout the year. This program is outlined in the diary in the blue pages P19-21. There are student representatives in each Pastoral Care class that will be highlighting opportunities for students on a regular basis. If anyone knows of ways we can help out in the community, please contact the school. Fr James is our new school chaplain for 2013. He will be visiting the school regularly and will soon be initiating a reconciliation program with our Year 9 students. We welcome Fr James and we look forward to having him assist us with the spiritual formation of our students.

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY YEAR 7 iPads The iPad pilot program is off to a flying start. On their first day Year 7 students used their time productively to setup their devices to work at school. Training began in a few apps and working out the most efficient way to use their iPads. We did notice that not all students had a suitable protective hard cover case for their iPad. We very strongly urge all devices to have a school approved protective cover to give maximum protection against accidental damage. Please refer to our iPad site at http://go2school.wix.com/ipad for the 3 recommended cases. Click on the image to take you to an online store where you can purchase the case or at least get a price comparison. YEAR 10 and NEW YEAR 11 LAPTOPS These students were given a loan agreement letter and a booklet of Terms and Conditions this week. A reminder that the agreement form must be signed and returned to the office as soon as possible. All students are required to take a quiz on Moodle indicating they have read and understood the Terms and Conditions. Year 10 laptops will be issued from 8.30 am this Friday 15th February. Year 11 laptops will be issued as they are ready during this coming week. Laptops CANNOT be issued if the loan agreement and/or quiz has not been done. ACCEPTABLE USE AGREEMENT for DIGITAL TECHNOLOGIES All junior students (Years 7 – 10) are required to have the acceptable use agreement on pages 19-21 of the College diary signed this week. This involves parents/guardians reading and signing this document also. Senior students have been issued a hard copy of this policy and are required to have it signed and returned to the Study centre.
