During the few short weeks that we have this year between Christmas and Ash Wednesday, we have been hearing readings about the beginnings of Jesus’ ministry. People were asking “Who is he?” “Where did he get such wisdom and miraculous powers?” “Isn’t this the son of Joseph?” The answers to these questions lie hidden in the syntax of this last question from today’s Gospel: Jesus is NOT the Son of Joseph! This is the Year of Faith. And the central truth of our faith is that Jesus is NOT the Son of Joseph. He is the Son of God, born of the Virgin Mary. Our beloved patron saint, referred to in passing in today’s Gospel, knew that the Father of Jesus was God. St. Joseph can help our faith. Those who are devoted to St. Joseph and to the Blessed Virgin Mary receive from them special graces to understand the mystery of the Incarnation. And to understand the Incarnation is to understand the mystery of life. As Pope Benedict has told us, faith is not primarily a matter of believing in a “theory,” but it is “an encounter with a person,” (Porta Fidei 11). “…In him, all the anguish and all the longing of the human heart finds fulfillment. The joy of love, the answer to the drama of suffering and pain, the power of forgiveness in the face of an offence received and the victory of life over the emptiness of death: all this finds fulfillment in the mystery of his Incarnation,” (Porta Fidei 13).

When the time came for the presentation of the Child Jesus in Jerusalem, Joseph and Mary take Him to the temple and are received by Simeon, “a man who was devout and righteous, looking for the consolation of Israel…” Simeon takes Jesus in his arms and blesses God saying,” Lord, now let your servant depart in peace, according to your word; for my eyes have seen your salvation...a light for revelation to the Gentiles and for glory to your people Israel” (Lk. 2:22-32). At the same time, we are told that Anna, a woman who was always at the temple, comes up and gives thanks to God, speaking of Jesus to all who were looking for the redemption of Jerusalem. These two characters in the Gospel of Luke represent the Old Covenant, Israel awaiting its redemption and the Messiah who will bring it. Luke introduces them in the same manner that he introduces John the Baptist, the greatest prophet and the precursor of the Lord. A door is closed on the old and another is open for the kingdom of heaven on earth to come. The birth of the Son of God will bring about the fulfillment of the promises of the great prophets, when the Holy Spirit will circumcise the heart of God’s people and make them able to follow Him. A glorious moment in salvation history, indeed! All these happen in the temple, as is depicted in the sacred image in this article. The canopy or roof of the temple is over all the participants, for it is
in the Church on earth that the kingdom of heaven is realized. The table (which could symbolize the altar), is draped in red, certainly not a coincidence, for it is on the altar of Calvary that our redemption is won by the Christ Jesus, through His sacrifice and immolation. The mysteries of our faith are always given in pairs. Here is the exciting presentation of the Child in the temple, following the prescriptions of the mosaic law, yet it is also the initiation of the greatest sacrifice. The parents who are overly joyous by this occasion, receive a prophecy of what is to come: “Behold this child is set for the fall and rising of many is Israel, and for a sign that is spoken against and a sword will pierce through your own soul also.” Mary is to share in the sacrifice of her Son through her maternal suffering. As His disciples, we too are called to present ourselves in sacrifice every morning with our offering: “O Jesus, through the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I offer You my prayers, works, joys and sufferings of this day for all the intentions of Your Sacred Heart, in union with the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass throughout the world.” We too, by our self-offering, enter into His Passion, and God in turn receives our gifts for the redemption of souls. We don’t know what the day has for us, but we know and trust that as we walk with God, all our fears and weaknesses are comforted by His strength. Jesus I trust in You!

Profiles in Stewardship by Youth Ministry Department
David and Jazmin Palomino
We hear in scripture to not just serve the Lord and answer His call, but to serve joyfully. David and Jazmin have both been beautiful examples of answering this call and serving our parish in whatever way possible, and whenever they can! They were married at St Joseph’s in September of 2010, and have a son, Cristian. Over the past 4-5 years, David and Jazmin have participated in the Youth-Contemporary Choir, have served on the CORE team working with the youth group, and most recently Jazmin has volunteered to help organize Live Stations of the Cross. Their joyful faith, uplifting personalities, and commitment to ministry encourages those around them. Outside of parish life David is a nurse and Jazmin attends school and works as a hair stylist and a full time mom, of course. They are grateful for the friends they have made in the church and enjoy fellowship. They open their home often to their brothers and sisters in Christ, finding any reason to host a potluck, game night, or party. Thank you, Jazmin and David, you guys are a blessing to our community!

GENERAL AUDIENCE — Wednesday, 2 January 2013 Part II
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
If we consider carefully the words: “by the Holy Spirit [he] was incarnate of the Virgin Mary”, we notice that they include four active subjects. The Holy Spirit and Mary are mentioned explicitly, but “he”, namely, the Son, who took flesh in the Virgin’s womb, is implicit. In the Profession of Faith, the Creed, Jesus is described with several epithets: “Lord... Christ, Only-Begotten Son of God... God from God, Light from Light, true God
from true God... consubstantial with the Father” (Niceno-Constantinopolitan Creed). We can therefore see that “he” refers to another person, the Father. Consequently the first subject of this sentence is the Father who, with the Son and the Holy Spirit, is the one God. This affirmation of the Creed does not concern God’s eternal being but, rather, speaks to us of an action in which the three divine Persons take part and which is brought about “ex Maria Virgine”. Without Mary God’s entry into the history of humanity would not have achieved its
purpose, and what is central to our Profession of Faith would not have taken place: God is a “God-with-us”. Thus Mary belongs irrevocably to our faith in God who acts, who enters history. She makes her whole person available, she “agrees” to become God’s dwelling place. Sometimes, on our journey and in our life of faith, we can sense our poverty, our inadequacy in the face of the witness we must offer to the world. However God chose, precisely, a humble woman, in an unknown village, in one of the most distant provinces of the great Roman Empire. We must always trust in God, even in the face of the most gruelling difficulties, renewing our faith in his presence and action in our history, just as in Mary’s. Nothing is impossible to God! With him our existence always journeys on safe ground and is open to a future of firm hope. In professing in the Creed: “by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary”, we affirm that the Holy Spirit, as the power of the Most High God, mysteriously brought about in the Virgin Mary the conception of the Son of God. The Evangelist Luke recorded the Archangel Gabriel’s words: “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you” (1:35). Two references are obvious: the first is to the moment of the Creation. At the beginning of the Book of Genesis we read that “the Spirit of God was moving over the face of the waters” (1:2); this is the Creator Spirit who gave life to all things and to the human being. What is brought about in Mary, through the action of this same divine Spirit, is a new creation: God, who called forth being from nothing, by the Incarnation gives life to a new beginning of humanity. The Fathers of the Church sometimes speak of Christ as the new Adam in order to emphasize that the new creation began with the birth of the Son of God in the Virgin Mary’s womb. This makes us think about how faith also brings us a newness so strong that it produces a second birth.

Our Mass Intentions This Week
As Christians our lifelong journey is to the Promised Land. We are given the gift of faith by our Father in heaven to guide us on this journey. St. Paul reminds us that without love we cannot make progress toward our destination. With love, we share the gifts of this life in order to help others along the way and thereby strengthen our desire to follow the path Jesus laid out for us “and open the door of Faith.” The words of Jeremiah and the gospel story remind us that the world may reject the message of love that we bring. By a life dedicated to the stewardship of God’s gifts, may we encourage each other in our heavenward journey.
