Through the eyes of the media we have been made acutely aware of something of the reality that is faced by so many in the wake of such devastaon. For those of us who have had the fortune of never having to experience this degree of loss - loss of homes, livelihoods and in some cases life itself - it is very difficult for us to comprehend the gravity of such events. It is in the face of such moments, in the darkest hours of people’s need, however, that the true light and goodness of the human spirit comes to the fore. The enormous outpouring of prayer, solidarity, goodwill and tremendous generosity of me, money and materials is always quite incredible. It is indeed a heartening sign of true hope and a recognion that we are people who are created in goodness and in love. May we endeavour to be mindful of those who are experiencing considerable heartache and loss at this me, both individually and collecvely. Week 4 generally brings with it a sasfying relief that the year has begun successfully and that life within the school has once again seled comfortably into a producve roune. The hype and anxiety that is oſten aached to the return to school is now almost a distant memory, and students are hopefully a lile more certain of new expectaons, which are oſten encountered with new teachers and a changed learning environment. It is important that as parents you remain recognisably supporve, parcularly in these first few weeks, as students sele into these new rounes and accustom themselves with different expectaons and teaching styles which may vary from teacher to teacher, class to class. A posive working partnership between home and school is absolutely vital in ensuring that a share sense of responsibility is geared towards always maintaining what is best for each and every child. Parent Concerns If parents have any concerns about their child’s welfare or progress at any me, their first point of contact should be their child’s teacher. Parents are asked to make an appointment to see their child’s teacher and outline to that teacher what the appointment is about. Teachers are not available during class me, but a message can be leſt at the School Office. Staff Meengs are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and therefore teachers are unable to meet on these days for parent interviews. Parents should avoid approaching teachers to address important issues close to class me, as this can disrupt the class roune. Parents are very welcome to telephone, send an email or note to the teacher. Teachers will then get in contact at their earliest convenience, hopefully within 24-48 hours. Principal’s ReportDear Parents, Students, Staff and all associated with St Joseph’s CommunityThere can be no doubt that the events of the past couple of weeks – widespread flooding across much of Queensland and devastating fires in parts of NSW, and, thank-fully to a lesser extent, the fires at Grantville which hit close to home - have in some way touched each of us in a profound way. Through the eyes of the media we have been made acutely aware of something of the reality that is faced by so many in the wake of such devastation. The enormous outpouring of prayer, solidarity, goodwill and tremendous generosity of time, money and materials is always quite incredible. It is indeed a heartening sign of true hope and a recognition that we are people who are created in goodness and in love. May we endeavour to be mindful of those who are experiencing considerable heartache and loss at this time, both individually and collectively. Week 4 generally brings with it a satisfying relief that the year has begun successfully and that life within the school has once again settled comfortably into a productive routine. The hype and anxiety that is often attached to the return to school is now almost a distant memory, and students are hopefully a little more certain of new expectations, which are often encountered with new teachers and a changed learning environment. It is important that as parents you remain recognisably supportive, particularly in these first few weeks, as students settle into these new routines and accustom themselves with different expectations and teaching styles which may vary from teacher to teacher, class to class. A positive working partnership between home and school is absolutely vital in ensuring that a share sense of responsibility is geared towards always maintaining what is best for each and every child.Parent Concerns If parents have any concerns about their child’s welfare or progress at any time, their first point of contact should be their child’s teacher. PrayerTeach me to listen, O God, to those

nearest me, my family and my friends.

Help me to be aware that no matter what words I hear, the message is,

Accept the person I am. Listen to me.

Help me to be less afraid to trust the voice inside - in the deepest part of me.

2019 Student Residential Address Collection

Bass Coast Young Leaders Work Shop

All families will have received a letter from the Australian Government (via CareMonkey) advising that all schools are being requested to provide a statement of addresses for students enrolled in 2019.

This process occurs every few years following a census and enables a periodic reassessment of a school’s Socioeconomic Status (SES) level required as part of the Australian Govern-ment’s funding arrangements. Please note that information in the statement of addresses provided by the school to the Department of Education and Training is de-identified.

2019 SCHOOL FEESSchool Fees will be sent out

by the end of this week. We apologise for the delay.

If you have not received your statement by the following week,

please check your email address with the office as soon as possible.

If you are paying via direct debit, please check that this is being taken out

of your account and your statements reflect this.

If you have concerns about being able to pay at this time it is

important you make an appointment with

Principal Ronan O’Mahony to discuss your situation.

CDFpay - our cash free platform

Have you set up your account yet?

Moving forward in 2019, St Joseph’s will become cash free. All school lunch orders will be processed online through our cash free platform CDF Pay.

Please follow the link below to set up your account. https://stjwonthaggi.cdfpay.org.au

If you have any questions or require help, please contact the school office.

Andrew Chinn

On Tuesday, February 2, the Young Leaders of Bass Coast participated in a workshop. These were students who had been nominated by their schools to receive an award for being noticed as great leaders.

Arriving at the Old Post Office in Wonthaggi, everyone began the day by getting to know the person sitting beside them, asking each other certain questions. We were then split into three groups and headed out to our activities.

Two of the groups started with cooking and bowls, and the other group made their own music. Our group started with bowls which we had to play inside as it was raining. We learned how to make the bowl curve the right way towards the kitty or jack. It was good fun and great to learn how to do it. Next we did cooking and made a Thai dessert, which included sweet potato and coconut cream with sugar. We all got to taste it, and it was great to try something new.

The group doing music were writing, and making a beat for what would later become a song. We started by all being given a sheet of paper between two. On that paper we wrote words about what we like about our community. Next we found rhyming words to put into an A B C D chart and went around in a circle rapping or singing what we wrote. We recorded our words and added music which then made it a song. We finished the day having lunch with the mayor and deputy mayor then a game of dodgeball.

St Joseph’s Easter RaffleOnce again it’s time for our Annual Easter Raffle. In past years this has been an excellent fundraiser for the students of our school. It has always been greatly supported by the families to donate an Easter Egg, chocolate bar or basket/cellophane to the school, which will enable us to make up Easter baskets to raffle at the school assembly on Monday April 1 at 9:00am.

Raffle tickets will be sent home with your child to sell at 50 cents per ticket (selling both sides) which need to be returned to the school with money no later than Thursday March 28. Make sure you clearly write the full name and phone number of the person purchasing the ticket. CDFPay is also an option for this fundraiser, just return the front cover of your raffle book with PAID VIA CDF printed clearly on the front.

Senior News - 5/6Buongiorno a tutti. Che Dio ti benedica. Like the rest of the school we are trying to use Italian as often as we can. We greet each other and mark the roll in Italian and now we are trying to learn an Italian prayer.

In our math lessons we are learning about place value up to 7 digit numbers, using two or three decimal places. We are using dice to generate random numbers to work with and we have also used number expanders to help us describe large numbers in different ways.

Students are practising finding Just Right books using the 5 finger test and learning about different genre types. We are making predictions as we read and are also making text to self, text to text and text to world connections.

Currently in Integrated Studies we are learning about identity, ethical principles and metacognition, which means we are thinking about our thinking. We are keeping track of our emotions using an emotional barometer and are considering lots of ethical dilemmas using different thinking hats.

In Religious Education our focus is learning about Catholic Social Teaching. We know that Preferential Option for the Poor means everyone in the world should get a fair share of the world’s resources, and Dignity of the Human Person means we are all equally loved by God no matter who we are.

Jennifer Lawlor - 5/6 Teacher

Junior News - 1/2

The 1/2s have had a very exciting start to the term. We are currently learning about Procedural text. Last week we wrote a procedure detailing how to make bread and today we made our own bread. It was delicious! Students are practising counting patterns in Maths and learning all about how we can care for God’s creation in Religion. We can’t wait to share all our learning with you on Seesaw, if you haven’t signed up already don’t for get to do so.

STEAMThis year at St Josephs we have

introduced a new specialist subject - STEAM.Standing for Science,

Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics, STEAM allows students

the opportunity to explore those various curriculum areas in a variety

of engaging ways.

Week 3 saw the commencement of STEAM lessons and some very excited students! Prep explored how we can create colours by mixing 2 different

paint colours together. 1/2 discovered the science behind slime and created

some. 3/4 worked on constructing various movable robotic sets and 5/6 started their designs for their famous

landmark replica’s that they will be constructing in the coming weeks.

There is lots more fantastic learning experiences coming this term in STEAM

so make sure to like the St Josephs Facebook pages for weekly photos of

whats been happening!
