St.Joseph’sCatholicCathedral,DunedinThe first Catholic clergy to visit Otago took place on 17 November 1840 when BishopPompalliersailedintotheOtakouHeadsintheschoonerSanctaMaria,celebratingaMasson22November1840attheOtakouHeads.ItwasjustoveradecadelaterbeforethefirstMasswasheld in Dunedin, with Fr Antoine Seon SM holding the service in a private house on 30November1850.1Thesecondoccasionwas ina far strangerplace -a skittlealley.2TherewasonlysporadicmissionaryvisitsfromCatholicClergyuntil1861,whenthefirstpriestwasbasedinDunedin,FrMoreauSMopenedthefirstCatholicChurchinDunedin(St.Joseph’s)on20July1862.3 The Diocese of Dunedinwas created on 26November 1869, and the first Bishop, theRightRevdPatrickMoran,DDarrivedon18February1871.He found thebrick churchof St.Joseph’scouldonlycontainone-sixthoftheCatholicCongregationofDunedin,andinapastoralletter to the Diocese of 3 March wrote: “This Diocese is almost entirely destitute of thenecessariesofDivineWorship,suchasaltars,vestments,chalice,andsuitablealtarornaments,etc. etc. In fact, so great are or wants, so almost entire the destitution that prevails—adestitution,sofarasasufficientnumberofmissionariesisconcerned,likelytoincrease,atleastfora time—that ithasbecomeaseriousquestionwithus ifweshouldnotatonce informtheHolySeethattherepresentationsmadeinordertosecuretheerectionofthisSeewerealmostentirely without foundation, and that there is no provision here for a Bishop or religiousinstitution.”4YetwithinsevenyearsastartwasmadeonthefoundationsoftheCathedralofSt.Joseph.ThesitefortheCathedralwaspurchasedfor£59inSeptember1868fromtheCrown,andconsistedof adeepgullywithunderground streams.ThearchitectF.W.Petre, in copingwith thedeepgully,designedfortyconcretefoundationsrangingfromfourfoottoeightfootsquareandthirtyto forty feetdeep,restingonthebluestonebedrock.ThepublicworkofreducingtheDowlingStreetcuttingprovidedthebackfillforthegully.Nearthesurface,thefoundationswerelinkedtogether with concrete arches, providing the level base for the walls. The foundations werestarted inMay 1878, and on 26 January 1879, BishopMoran laid the foundation stone.5 TheBishopdidnotwish tosee theDioceseburdenedwithdebt, so theCathedralwasbuiltas thefundsweretohand.Evenso,onlythenaveofthePetredesignwasbuilt.ItwastobeacruciformFrench Gothic building (222 feet by 102 feet), with a central tower 220 feet high.6 If theCathedralhadbeenbuildtoplan,therewouldhavebeen84foundationpiles.ThebuildingisbuiltofWateroftheLeithbluestoneabovethefoundations,thentwocoursesofMelbournestone, followedbyPortChalmersstoneandOamarulimestone.TheentrancestepsweretobeofNewZealandmarble,butfinancesdictatedconcretebeingusedin1891,theswinggatesweredesignedbyPetreandbuiltbyBarningham&Co.ThetimberroofconsistsofOregontrusses and roof framing of Rimu and Kauri. The roofing of the nave and aisles in 1884wasrequiredtobedoneinonestage,andtheBishophadtoappealtothewiderdioceseandgointodebt to finance the roof. In January 1885, Bishop Moran announced the intention to have atemporarysanctuaryandleavethefacadewithoutthetwotowers,howeversufficientdonationscame in to have the south tower completed in January 1886, before the opening day on 14February 1886. Four months later the north tower had been completed. The building cost£20,000andalldebtsclearedwithinthreeyears.7The building has had various repairs over the years. The tower pinnacles became dangerousandwereremovedinthe1950s,beingreplacedwithconcretereplicasin1975whenworkwasdoneonthefacadeandtowers.TheOamarustoneflyingbuttresseswerereplacedwithconcretein1967,andtheroofslatesoftheaislesreplacedwithironin1955and1972.8Inonesensethebuildingwascompletedin1997whenthearchitectsMcCoy&Wixonwerecontractedtore-roofandre-cladthesanctuaryandtiethebrickstructuretothebluestonenave.9

Internally and externally the carvingswere done by Louis John Godfrey& Sons. Some of thecarvingwascompletedafter theCathedralwasopened.ThehighaltarwasdesignedbyPetreandcarvedbyGodfrey.WiththereformsoftheSecondVaticanCouncil, thealtarwasdeemedobsoleteandwassecuredbytheDunedinPublicArtGallery.WhentheArtGallerywasmovedin1996 to theOctagon site, the altarwas returned to the Cathedal. The entranceporch floor ismadeofVilleroy&Bochtiles,andthe1896BishopMoranmemorialaltarwasdesignedbyPetreand carved by Lewis Godfrey jnr. The plastered groined ceilingwas cleaned and repaired inDecember1982.10

The firstmusical instruments to be used in St. Joseph’s were provided by a band, run by A.Fleury. LateronaharmoniumwaspurchasedbyFatherMoreau.11AmeetingintheShamrockHotel on 1 February 1866 started a fund for purchasing a pipe organ,12 and one wassubsequentlyorderedfromGeorgeFinchamofMelbourne.ThiswasonviewtothepublicinhisRichmondfactoryon17November1866beforebeingdismantledandshippedtoDunedin.13InDunedin theorganwaserectedbyCharlesBegg, (piano-makerand seller)14 andopenedon1February1867.Thereportnotedthat therehadbeennotenoughtimetothoroughlytunetheorganbeforehand.This organ, one of George Fincham’s earliest, was built concurrently with the organ for theExhibition of 1866.15 It would seem that the St. Joseph’s organwas the first instrument thatFinchamfittedcapsontothereedtubes.16GREATOpenDiapasonlarge 8OpenDiapasonsmall 8StoppedDiapason 8 CC-BBClarabella 8 TCDulciana 8 TCPrincipal 4Flute 4 TCFifteenth 2Sesquialtra IIIPEDALOpenDiapason 16

Compass:56/29MechanicalkeyandstopactionIn 1876 St. Joseph’s Church was enlarged, with a new organ gallery, and the organ wasdismantled and re-erected by Mr Litolff who also undertook extensive improvements to theorgan.17In1886theorganwasinstalledinthenewCathedral,intimefortheopening.During 1893 Fincham & Hobday quoted £2,000 to provide a three-manual pneumaticinstrument of 39 speaking stops for the gallery.18 This was to have a divided case, with theconsoleundertherosewindowfacingthealtar.Theconsolewouldhavehadfourthumbpistonsas playing aids along with one thumb piston that bought on full organ. How exactly theinstrumentwouldhave fitted in thegallerywouldhavebeen interesting,with two full length16ftstopsonthepedalandSwellandChoirboxes,asitwasnotuntil1897thatthegallerywasloweredtwofeet.Thiswasbecausetheloftopeningwastoorestrictiveinegressofthesound,andtheloftwasloweredtoprovidealargertonalopening.Therewasfurtherworkdoneontheinstrumentintheearly1930s,probablyincludingelectricblowing.19InMay1974,acontractwassignedwiththeSouthIslandOrganCompanytorebuildtheorgan,withMaxwellFernieasconsultantandreferenceofficer.19,20ThepipeworkandPedalBourdonchestweretheonlypartsoftheoldinstrumentretainedforthenewinstrument.Theorganwasdesignedasathree-manual,withtheGreatandSwelldivisionsoccupyingeachsideofthegallery,andthePositiveOrganbuiltundertherosewindow.Thesoundboardswerebuiltwithschwimmerreservoirs,andtheGreatTrumpetwaspreparedfor.Theorganwasdedicatedon1June1976.21
