God Loves the World T hree men were trying to come up with a definition of "success". Said the first man,

"I would consider myself successful if I could have a private, personal conversation with the President of the United States in the White House Oval Office." The second man said, "I would consider myself successful if, while I am having a private, personal conversation with the President of the United States in the White House Oval Office, his hotline rings, and he ignores it." Said the third man, "For me to feel successful, I would be having a private, personal conversation with the President of the United States in the White House Oval Office, the hotline rings, he answers it and he says, 'It's for you'."

In Jesus' words, true success arises out of our ability to love in a way that says to God, "All that belongs to me is Yours." One of the things we discover about being a Christian, as we get closer and closer to Christ, is that we become, more and more, men and women for others. Jesus tells us that the more you are open to God and the more you are open to your neighbor, the more you become fulfilled as a person. It's a strange paradox, but it is a Christian paradox. We are successful as Christians not to the degree to which we find ways for our own ego to be pumped up but to the degree that we are present to others for the love of Christ.

A comparison was made about two ways of loving. Below is how the world loves: I love you because you love me I love you because I need you I love you because you are good to me I love you because I feel good loving you I love you are cute, rich, popular and powerful I love you because I can use you, manipulate you and exploit you for my own interest.

But, as God loves us, it is like this: Even if you don’t like me, I still love you Even if you refuse to forgive me, I still love you Even if I don’t need you anymore, I still love you Even if I don’t feel loving you because you are no longer cute and desirable, I still love Even if you are no longer in power, or rich or have no use of you I still love you Even if I do not get anything out of loving you, even if I look ridiculous for loving you, I still love.

Loving as God loves does not mean approving one’s wrongdoing or ignoring the requirement of justice. It means not wishing the person ill and not telling lies about him. It means trying to understand him, trying to feel what he feels and allowing Jesus in you and me to forgive him.

Radujcie si zawsze C zwarta niedziela Wielkiego Postu to Niedziela Radości. Święty Paweł w liście do

Filipian mówi: Radujcie się zawsze w Panu. Jeszcze raz powtarzam: radujcie się (Flp 4, 4). Jest to wręcz nakaz. Ważne jest tu słowo zawsze. Jeśli zawsze mamy się radować, tzn. zarówno w chwilach kiedy dobrze nam się wiedzie, jak i w chwilach trudnych, nawet w chwilach cierpienia, co jest niewątpliwie trudnym zadaniem. Istnieje różnica między prawdziwą radością płynącą z dobrego życia zakorzenionego w Bogu, a radością zwykłą, czasami wręcz wesołkowatością. Radowanie się to nie ma być jakiś tylko żart, wyśmiewanie się z kogoś, ale prawdziwa szczera uprzejmość względem drugiego człowieka. Jeśli mam Boga w sercu, to jestem radosny i uprzejmy dla bliźniego. Ojcowie Kościoła często komentowali wezwanie św. Piotra: „Radujcie się!”. Zadawali sobie pytanie, jak można się stale radować, skoro życie nie zawsze daje powody do radości. Tak też pyta Jan Chryzostom w jednym z kazań: „Jak to możliwe, mówi się, żeby nieustannie się cieszyć, choć przecież jest się człowiekiem? To nie jest trudne cieszyć się, ale ciągle się cieszyć to wydaje mi się niemożliwe. Otacza nas tyle różnorodnej nędzy, która odbiera nam radosną odwagę. Traci się syna, albo współmałżonka albo uczciwego przyjaciela, który był bliższy naszemu sercu niż wszyscy krewni. Tracimy majątek, dopada nas choroba albo przytrafiają się nam inne wypadki. Albo trapimy się nadszarpniętym honorem. Wzrastają ceny albo pojawia się zaraza, albo nałożony zostaje nieznośny podatek, albo pojawiają się problemy w domu. Nie jesteśmy w stanie wyliczyć wszystkiego, co w życiu prywatnym i publicznym tak często wywołuje w nas smutek. Jak więc jest możliwe, mówi się, żeby zawsze być radosnym?”.

Jan Chryzostom następnie wskazuje na drogę do radości. Wszyscy ludzie „mają potrzebę radowania się, bycia wesołym: tam prowadzi ich wszelkie działanie, rozmowy i czyny”. Ale nie wszystkim jest znana droga trwałej radości. Możemy się nieustannie cieszyć jedynie wtedy, gdy cieszymy się w Panu, w Chrystusie. „Kto cieszy się w Panu, przypadek nie odbierze mu tej radości. Wszystko inne, co powoduje naszą radość, jest zmienne, przemijające i łatwo podlega zmianom”. Chodzi więc o pytanie: Jak w świecie, w którym tak wiele jest cierpienia i nędzy, można się nieustannie cieszyć? Odpowiedzią jest radość w Bogu i z Boga, radość w Jezusie Chrystusie. Tak więc tęsknota za prawdziwą radością, która tkwi w każdym człowieku, zawsze jest tęsknotą za Bogiem, który obdarowuje trwałą i niezniszczalną radością. Czas Wielkiego Postu, który przeżywamy, ma na celu umocnienie naszych relacji z Bogiem w Trójcy Jedynym. Kiedy nasze serce wypełnia Bóg, kiedy nasze życie jest skierowane na Boga, a w relacjach z innymi kierujemy się miłością ofiarna wtedy doświadczamy radości, której nikt i nic nie będzie w stanie zakłócić.

Szczególnym miejscem naszego wzrastania niech będzie Msza Święta i Droga Krzyżowa, które pozwalają nam duchowo łączyć się z Chrystusem, który za nas cierpiał, umarł na krzyżu ale i zmartwychwstał, otwierając dla nas drogę do nieba. Bóg przemawia do nas na różne sposoby: przez drugiego człowieka, wydarzenia z życia, ale szczególnie w ciszy. Celem rekolekcji jest wejście w siebie, uczenie się pracy nad sobą, uspokojenie w zamęcie dnia powszedniego. Owocem jest wewnętrzne skupienie, nawrócenie i odnowa duchowa. Od czasu do czasu trzeba nam czegoś więcej niż codziennej modlitwy. Wiara jest łaską. Trzeba jednak o nią dbać, oczyszczać, ożywiać, bo inaczej może obumrzeć. Tymczasem wiara ma dawać każdemu z nas siłę i mobilizację do dobrego życia oraz ożywiać nadzieję, że Bóg nas kocha i pragnie naszego szczęścia.

H oy escuchamos en el Evangelio de los vendedores que convierten el Templo –lugar de culto a único Dios- en el mercado; lugar de culto de dinero. La reacción

de Jesús es muy clara e inspirada por la cólera: “hizo un azote de cuerdas y los expulso a todos del templo, tiro al suelo las monedas y les volcó las mesas”. ¿Qué ha sucedido que la mano que acariciaba a los niños y tocaba a los enfermos tome ahora el látigo para expulsar a los vendedores del templo? Aquí tenemos el mal muy concreto. El hombre perdió la capacidad de discernir en qué consiste pecado. Hoy día sucede lo mismo... hay muchos que ni perciben el pecado presente en su vida.

No es otra cosa, sino que para el bien del hombre que Dios deja sus DIEZ MANDAMIENTOS: No tendrás otros dioses fuera de mí. Aquellos que del dinero han hecho su dios están contra este mandamiento y por eso su obrar es malo. Ya San Agustín a sí mismo preguntaba ¿en qué consiste el pecado? Pues al usar la misma cosa en este caso el dinero unos hacen mal y los otros bien. La respuesta nos da en una de sus obras: El pecado representa mal que consiste en desorden interior que nos convierte en esclavos y nos domina.

Muchas veces nos imaginamos al Señor como alguien que sonríe e indiferentemente mira todo el mal que hacemos y lo aplaude. Que distinta imagen nos trae la Biblia. A un mal espíritu que perturbaba a un hombre le dice con dureza: ¡Cállate y sal de ese

hombre! Se dirige a aquellos que piensan y hablan del Señor pero no cambian para nada su

vida. ¿Por qué me llaman: Señor, Señor y no hacen lo que digo? A aquellos que no reviven su fe sino buscan signos les dice. Esta es una generación

malvada; pide una señal, pero no se le dará una señal diferente a la de Jonás. A estos que piensan que la religión consiste en bautizarse... y la tratan

superficialmente la fe les dice: ¡Torpes! Y hay de ustedes. Y más duro todavía dirá a los fariseos- ¡Hipócritas!

Actitud de Jesús en Evangelio de hoy nos muestra la cólera del Señor que está dirigida contra el mal. Es la cólera que en su volumen y consecuencias es adecuada y proporcional al mal producido. La reacción de los judíos consiste en pedir los signos y milagros, pero el valor de la fe consiste en el misterio de la cruz. Por eso San Pablo dice: Los judíos piden milagros y los griegos buscan sabiduría. Nosotros en cambio anunciamos un Mesías crucificado... que es poder de Dios y Sabiduría de Dios.

Como vemos el valor de la vida cristiana consiste en fijar nuestra mirada en Cristo crucificado. Él es para nosotros el signo de amor. Porque no hay amor más grande si uno entrega su vida por los amigos. Cristo murió por nosotros, vino encontrar y salvar a los que estaban perdidos. Perder la dignidad humana sucede siempre cuando, en vez de dominar las cosas, ellas mismas nos dominan y nos separan del Señor.

Rincón Parroquial En tiempo de cuaresma teneos: todos los viernes tenemos Vía crucis a las 7:00 pm que terminan con la adoración del Santísimo sacramento; y los jueves después de la misa video reflexiones cuaresmales. Misas en español: Los domingos a las 12:30 pm. Todos los jueves a las 7 de la noche. Cada primer jueves del mes se celebra la misa para los enfermos donde pedimos la sanación física y espiritual para los participantes. Hora Santa: Un momento de adoración al Santísimo Sacramento todos los viernes a las 7:00 p.m. en la Iglesia. Cada segundo viernes del mes tenemos la Hora Santa de Sanación pidiendo a Jesús sacramentado sanación espiritual y corporal. Únicamente los primeros viernes del mes la adoración tiene lugar en la Capilla de la Adoración al lado de la Casa parroquial. Confesiones: Tienen lugar siempre media hora antes de la misa los jueves en el horario de 6:30- 7:00 pm. Además el viernes durante la adoración del Santísimo Sacramento de 7:00-8:00 p.m. Despacho Parroquial: Suministra toda la información relacionada con los sacramentos, celebraciones y todas las actividades que se realizan en la Parroquia San José Obrero. Bautizos de los niños: • Inscripciones para Bautizos son de lunes a viernes en el horario de la oficina de

9:00 am.- 4:30 pm • Si los padrinos pueden ser solteros ya confirmados y si son pareja, deben estar

casados por la Iglesia. Se requiere certificado de matrimonio. • Las pláticas pre-bautismales para los padres y padrinos tienen lugar en la Iglesia de

St. Joseph the Worker el primer domingo de cada mes, después de la misa a las 12:30 pm. También puede asistir a las mismas en otra parroquia, pero en tal caso debe presentar el certificado que lo compruebe.

• Los bautizos en la Parroquia se celebran el primer y tercer sábado de cada mes a las 9:15 am

Presentación de los niños: Se pide a los padres anunciar con anticipación en el despacho parroquial (oficina) o antes de la misa el deseo de presentar sus hijos/as en la misa de domingo. I believe in one God, the Father almighty,

maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible.

This is the first part of our declaration of faith at Mass on Sunday. The entire Creed was formulated and formalized at the Council of Nicea in 325 AD. The Council was initially called and presided over by Emperor Con-stantine I (although he was only a catechumenate at the time and waited un-til he was on his death bed before being baptized.) Constantine wanted unity in Church doctrine since he felt it would promote peace in the Empire. He had opened the Council as honorary president, and he assisted at the sub-sequent sessions, but the direction of the theological discussions was given, as was fitting, to the ecclesiastical leaders of the Council. The actual presi-dent seems to have been Hosius of Cordova (an assistant to Constantine), assisted by the pope's legates, Victor and Vincentius. Three hundred eight-een bishops and the two legates of Pope St. Sylvester I attended the Coun-cil. The Council voted 316 to 2 to confirm the Nicene Creed as our primary Catholic beliefs. Although several issues were decided at the Council of Nicea, the key for-mulation coming out of the Council was the Nicene Creed. And the primary dispute regarding the content of the Creed concerned the nature of Jesus Christ himself and his relationship to God the Father. (More on that next week) Beginning in Genesis, and throughout the Old Testament, it is clear the God revealed himself as the creator of both earth and heaven (all things visible and invisible). The cosmos, the earth and its inhabitants including men and women were the visible - and the angelic spirit realm the invisible. Primarily, the Old Testament focuses on the visible world and its relationship with the one and only God. However, the invisible world of angels does make rare appearances when they take human form as God’s messengers. God was very clear that he is the one and only God and that no other “gods” were to be worshipped by his chosen people (the Israelites). In his up and down relationship with his chosen people (the down times being when they resorted to worshipping other “gods”), he alternatively fought for them against their enemies or allowed their enemies to take them into captivity - because they had abandoned him. However, God never broke the cove-nants he had made with Noah, Abraham, Moses, etc. and remained faithful to the Israelites in spite of their many infidelities. Although there are oblique references to the Son and the Holy Spirit in the Old Testament, the Father is the overarching person of God communicating with man during that time period. The Son and the Holy Spirit are clearly re-vealed In the New Testament.

Pro-life champion, missionary, pastor served the poor in Chicago and the Philippines

Father Michael Bonner, SVD 1937-2018

Father Michael Bonner SVD, a missionary in the Philippines and the United States, died at Techny on Feb. 23 at the age of 80.

Father Bonner, who championed the pro-life cause, served as a pastor in the Archdiocese of Chicago for a quarter of a century. Born and raised in Chicago, he was the second of Patrick and Ann Mary (nee Philbin) Bonner’s three sons.

As a child, he attended St. Francis de Sales grammar school on the city’s Southside. In 1953 after two years at Mendel Catholic High School, the young Michael Bonner transferred to the Divine Word Brothers’ Candidate School at Techny.

Within a year, he decided to study for the priesthood. One of his early ministries became a sign of things to come. As a seminarian, he taught seventh grade religion at St. Joseph the Worker in Wheeling, Ill.

Following his profession of vows in 1957 and ordination in 1966, Father Bonner left for his first assignment in the Philippines. For 25 years, he worked as a parish priest and director of high schools in Abra, Cagayan and Bangued. At one assignment, he served a parish that

encompassed 26 barrios with 13 chapels. In the Springtime, he often celebrated First Communion for more than 100 communicants.

During his time in the Philippines, Father Bonner was director of St. John High School in San Juan, Abra; director of Divine Word College in Bangued, Abra; chairman of the Abra Catholic Rhythm Clinic; a member of the Priests’ Senate; and chairman of the Diocesan Clergy monthly meeting. In addition, he assisted the staff at the cathedral on Sundays.

In 1991, Father Bonner returned to the United States to become pastor of St. Benedict the African parish in Chicago’s West Englewood neighborhood until 1994 when he was assigned to St. Bronislava, a parish in the South Chicago neighborhood that predominantly served families of African American, Hispanic, Haitian and Polish descent. In 2004, he was installed as pastor of St. Joseph the Worker parish in Wheeling, Ill., where he served until he retired in 2015.

Father Bonner held a master’s degree in Guidance and Counseling from University of San Carlos in Cebu City, Philippines.

He is survived by two brothers, James and John Bonner.

Two funeral Masses were held for Father Bonner. The first took place at the Divine Word Residence at Techny on Feb. 27; the second at St. Joseph the Worker on Feb. 28. He was buried at St. Mary Cemetery at Techny.

Memorial donations can be made in the name of Father Bonner in lieu of flowers. They may be made for the care of elderly and infirmed missionaries and sent to The Rector, Divine Word Residence, 1901 Waukegan Road, P.O. Box 6000, Techny, IL 60082-6000.
