Pastor’s Column

Dear Parish Families,

We are now finishing Teacher Appreciation Week 2020. Can you remember the names of all your elementary teachers?! I went to St. Charles Catholic School. These were my teachers. I loved my Catho-lic School days and could tell you where I sat in the various rooms and could tell you all kinds of stories from each year. I LOVED my school. I LOVED my teachers and priests. Priests – Fr. Charlie and Fr. Don Principal – Mrs. Suttner (a good friend of

Mrs. Livingston’s) Preschool - Mrs. Alexander Kindergarten - Mrs. Frankenburg 1st Grade - Mrs. Donna Friesel 2nd Grade - Mrs. Mary Willman 3rd Grade- Mrs. Paskash 4th Grade - Mrs. Smith 5th Grade - Mrs. Powell 6th Grade - Mrs. Hershberger 7th Grade - Mrs. Myra Farmer 8th Grade - Mr. Evans Science – Mrs. Deckard Art – Mrs. Brown Gym – Mrs. French Library – Mrs. Gleason Music – Mrs. Freund and Mrs. Boshcoff

I’m so thankful for these and al the teachers who touched my life. Together with my family, they made me the man I am today and I’m supremely thankful. Those years were simply wonderful—heaven-like, you might say. These teachers had a lot to do with that. I hope that our kids here at St. Joe are able to look back on their years here with the same affection, nostalgia, and joy that I have in my heart right now. I thank God for our teachers with all my heart, as I know we all do. Happy Teacher Appreciation Week! Blessings and prayers, Fr. Mike

St. Joseph News A Note from Our Summer Seminarian

Dear Parishioners,

My name is Tyler Huber, and I am looking forward to spending my summer with you all at St. Joseph. As far as my own story goes, I grew up in Floyds Knobs, Indiana. My home parish is St. Mary of the Knobs, and I grew up playing sports, hunting, fishing, participating in youth ministry, and working on a family friend’s farm. After high school, I went to Purdue University to study engineering, and it was at an adoration chapel in Lafayette, Indiana where I first began to think about the priesthood. This revelation in my prayer life started during my sophomore year, but it took me several years to act on it.

During these early stages of discernment, I got more involved at the Newman Center on Purdue’s cam-pus, St. Tom’s. My sophomore year I helped lead a college aged men’s group, and my junior year I served as the youth minister for the middle and high school youth of the parish. After my junior year, I had my dream internship working for a structures firm up in Michigan. During that summer, God gave me everything I could have asked for... great friends, a strong Catholic community, a job I loved, and yet, I was still longing for something more.

It was through these experiences that God slowly prepared me to answer his invitation, and I am so glad I finally said yes to seminary following that sum-mer internship. I applied for St. Meinrad during my senior year, and I entered seminary the fall after my graduation. That was 2017, so I have been in semi-nary formation for three years now. I studied two years of philosophy before starting theology this past school year, and this will be my third summer assign-ment. I spent my first summer at Holy Spirit Parish on the eastside of Indianapolis, and I spent last sum-mer learning Spanish in Cuernavaca, Mexico.

During my three years of seminary, God has truly transformed me. I have grown in ways I never could have imagined possible, and I have made some of the closest friendships of my life. Saying yes to seminary has led to an incredible journey, and I am excited to see what God has in store for me during my time at St. Joseph’s.

During this time that you cannot be around other people, please plan to take a walk by yourself in St. Vincent Cemetery. While you are there please take the decorations off of your loved one’s grave. The winds have blown many around. You might even pick up some fallen branches and sticks and put them on the brush pile by the Pollinator Habitat Plot. May God bless you and keep you healthy.

Sr. Joan’s Corner

Dear Parishioners,

In our readings for the Fifth Sunday of Easter we are invited to reflect on what it means to live in the pres-ence of God. In the first letter of Peter he writes, “Come to God, a living stone…chosen and pre-cious…let yourselves be built into a spiritual house. We don’t often think of stones as being alive. Native Americans and other indigenous people have always held the belief that all creation is blessed and has spirit and life. Many other people are also beginning to realize this as true. May this growing conscious-ness help us to realize that each person is a creation of God, connected with each other and with all of creation. Creation is truly a “spiritual house” created by God and given to us.

During this time of being separated and not being able to go to Mass and gather as a community, let us be more conscious of the presence of God in our homes and especially in nature. As the grass is growing, leaves are sprouting, flowers are beginning to blossom, may we be more conscious of God’s loving presence in all of the gifts of nature.

This week as you make time to pray, possibly you may take a walk outside and thank God for all the good you see. I invite you to take a walk around our cemetery and pray for all who are buried there and thank God for their lives and how they contributed to the betterment of this world. Be conscious that you are a living stone, chosen and precious among God’s beautiful creation.

One of God’s best creations is Mothers. God speaks to us through our mothers. May we thank them and pray for them this Sunday and often. Happy Mother’s Day!

Sr. Joan

Dear Friends, Peace be with you! We wanted to update you on some news from Archbishop Thompson regarding the Sacraments: The five Catholic dioceses of the Province of Indian-apolis will begin resuming public liturgies (e.g. Mass and Sacraments) by 30 May 2020, the Vigil of Pente-cost, with restrictions outlined by each diocese and provided to the parishes within their respective jurisdictions. The dispensation from the obligation to participate at Mass on Sundays is extended through-out the State of Indiana until 15 August 2020 for all Catholics. Further information regarding the resumption of the celebration of public Masses and other sacraments as well as the opening of churches within the Archdi-ocese of Indianapolis will be forthcoming. I will keep you posted as soon as the Archdiocese sends more information on Sunday Mass, Daily Mass, Confes-sions, Baptisms, Weddings, etc. Thanks for your patience and steadfast faith in these challenging times! Like so many of you, we cannot wait to be back in church together. Fr. Mike and Sr. Joan

Believe-Christ Is Our Cornerstone

“I am the way and the truth and the life,” Jesus says to his disciples in the passage from John we hear today. He is the foundation on which we build our lives, the cornerstone of our spiritual home. “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God, believe also in me.” --John 14:1
