right now. This whole process of inquiry and
potential conversion is called RCIA—The Rite of
Christian Initiation of Adults.
We will respect your personal journey with God!
Prayer and Devotion Opportunities Our Lady of Fatima Devotion
Our Lady came to Fatima with a message from God to
every man, woman and child. She promised that the
whole world would be at peace, and that many souls
would go to heaven if her requests were listened to
and obeyed.
In response to her requests, the First Saturday of each
month is devoted to Our Lady of Fatima. This
devotion includes 8:00 AM mass, a novena to Our
Lady of Fatima, the Rosary, the opportunity to
celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation, and
fellowship in Carew hall at 9:00 AM.
All are welcome at this devotion.
St Joseph Parish Monthly Recollection
On the First Friday of every month, at 7:30 PM we
hold our Monthly Parish Recollection. This is an hour
of prayer (recollection) before our Lord present in the
Blessed Sacrament—whose heart is the source of
immense charity and generous love.
The foundation of this prayer is God’s presence in
our souls as Creator, Preserver, and Author of all
Graces (“In Him we live and move and have our
being.” Acts 17:28). God is our Father and our
Friend and is our sweet Guest.
We are called to acknowledge this great truth: God is
in each of us, our soul is His Temple.
This evening of recollection includes Exposition of
the Blessed Sacrament, praying the Psalms, Silence, a
Gospel reading and a reflection on many topics
including: the Cardinal Virtues of prudence, justice,
temperance, and fortitude; The Theological Virtues of
faith, hope and love; The gifts of the Holy Spirit:
wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude,
knowledge, piety and awe & wonder in God’s
presence. The evening ends with Benediction.
Every soul, hungry and thirsty for God, is invited to
this holy hour every First Friday of the month to
adore, venerate and contemplate the Sacred Heart of
Jesus and to have a quiet dialogue with God.
St Joseph Men’s Prayer Group
We meet every Tuesday evening at 7:30 PM in the
Church where we pray the Rosary.
Afterward we move to the main vestibule for coffee,
donuts and fellowship.
This is a great opportunity to be strengthened in your
commitment as a Catholic man just by spending time
with others like you!
See you Tuesday!
OUR LITURGY
Isaiah challenges us to be heralds of the good news and prepare the way of the Lord. In the second reading, Peter reminds us to prepare for the right things and to be at peace, and without spot or blemish. Saint Mark’s Gospel begins today with people going out to hear and be baptized by John the Baptist. He tells them of one mightier than he who is coming.

Beginning in January 2015, we will no
longer accept deposit bottles and cans!
Thank you to everyone who has donated them in the
past and to the men who faithfully prepare them for
recycling, but we are moving away from that.
Our collection of deposit bottles has had some
negative side effects - desperate people have broken
into the bottle trailer, dirty bottles attract vermin, so
there are feral cats around the property to take care
of that problem, and it is an eyesore which is not
inviting for anyone new coming to the parish or
school.
Mostly, for the sake of our spiritual growth, we need
to move from “last fruits” in the direction of first
fruits when it comes to building the City of God.
If you would like, feel free to return your own
bottles and donate the change but we will no longer
accept deposit bottles beginning in the new year!
Christmas Mass Intentions In every parish, many people want to have their
loved ones remembered at Christmas Mass. The
difficulty is that there are more intentions than there
are scheduled masses so many parishes do what St
Joseph Parish has done for years - we do not give
any individual the opportunity to have a mass
intention and instead we celebrate all the Christmas
Masses for the people of the parish.
This year we are going to try something different
I have learned from other parishes that another way
to respond to the great desire for Christmas Mass
intentions is to do what we do with All Souls Day.
Beginning this year we will have Multiple Mass
Intentions for Christmas (Easter too). The request
for an intention is simple. There will be green
Christmas Mass Intentions envelopes available in
the church during the season of Advent. All you
have to do is write the names of the loved ones you
want remembered on the envelope and drop it in the
basket or at the parish office. The priests will
privately read the names and the intention envelopes
will be placed on the altar during all of our
Christmas Masses. Since there will most likely be
too many names to read individually, the Prayer of
the Faithful will read, “For those remembered in our
Christmas Mass Intentions…”
I hope this gives many of you the opportunity to
have your loved ones brought to the altar during our
Christmas masses.
Know that you are in our prayers always!
A Christmas gift anyone can give - a hug! Hugging is healthy. It helps the immune system,
cures depression, reduces stress and induces sleep.
It’s invigorating, rejuvenating, and has no
unpleasant side effects. Hugging is nothing less
than a miracle drug.
Hugging is all natural. It is organic, naturally
sweet, no artificial ingredients, non-polluting,
environmentally friendly and 100% wholesome.
Hugging is the ideal gift. Great for any occasion,
fun to give and receive, shows you care, comes with
its own wrapping and, of course, fully returnable.
Hugging is practically perfect. NO batteries to
wear out, inflation-proof, non-fattening, no monthly
payments, theft proof and non-taxable.
Hugging is an underutilized resource with magical
powers. When we open our hearts and arms, we
encourage others to do the same.
Think of the people in your life. Are there any
words you’d like to say? Are there any hugs you
want to share? Are you waiting and hoping
someone else will ask first? Don’t wait! Initiate!

Enjoy time with God
It is work to find moments of heavenly peace in our
hectic world. But the work really is worth it.
About this time last year right stuff before mass I saw
two kids (around 10 and 12 years old) playing hand
held video games. I asked them to turn them off in
church and they did. Then I saw a man texting. I
didn’t have the guts to ask him to stop.
I shared this with a priest friend who asked, “Did you
tell him it is a sacrilege?” Wow, that is strong!!
But I would like to say that, when we have the gift of
a moment for quiet in church, we really should take
advantage of it because in our busy world, we may not
get another like it for a while.
A moment of heavenly peace in the presence of God
involves work of quieting ourselves and our devices
but it is definitely worth the work! Here is some food
for prayer during Advent:
The Virgin shall be with child and bear a son and they
shall name him Emmanuel for God is with us! Isaiah 7:14
They shall name him Wonder Counselor, God Hero,
Father Forever, Prince of Peace Isaiah 9:5
The Holy Spirit will come upon you and the power of
the Most High will overshadow you; hence your child
shall be called Son of God...for nothing is impossible
with God. Luke 1: 35,37
Christmas Wishes
In “Silent Night” we sing to Mary and Jesus, “Sleep
in heavenly peace.” My prayer during this Advent
and Christmas season is that all of us may find some
moments of heavenly peace.
For those who have lost a loved one this past year
and for any who find this holiday season a little
difficult because of missed loved ones, my prayer is
that you can see in the Christ child the promise of
the doors to heaven opening to all of us and that this
promise gives you a moment of peace even as you
continue to mourn.
For those whose financial burdens make it difficult
to have the kind of Christmas you would like for
your family, I pray that you can see in the Christ
child the ultimate gift of God being with us. I pray
that you will also see in one another the gift of love
and will enjoy each other’s presence.
For those whose lives are so busy, I pray that you
will be able to sit quietly on Christmas morning or
night in front of your nativity scene or lighted tree
and just breathe in some of the peace we sing of
during this season.
For those who struggle to “get into the spirit” I pray
that you will remember that Christmas is not so
much about us getting into the spirit as it is about
Him getting into the flesh of our lives. I pray that
even when the struggles of our lives get in the way
of being merry, we can all find ways to choose to
live in the joy that comes from knowing we are
loved by God.
For young couples in the early years of marriage I
pray that you, like the Holy Family, will be able to
endure the challenges life brings you and that you
will turn to God in times of need.
For all the adults who long for the days of childhood
when Christmas was magic and when it was so easy
to believe, I pray that we all remember that seeing
isn’t believing, believing is seeing. I pray that we
can all look at the world through the eyes of faith
and see the presence of Christ in our daily lives.
For the children I pray that just as Jesus grew in
wisdom and grace before God and people so will
you grow using all the gifts and talents that God has
given you from the moment of your creation in
God’s image and likeness.
For all who will travel this holiday season, I pray
that, like the wise men, you may always follow the
guidance given by God and that your travels will
bring you into Christ’s presence.
Something I learned about Advent from a
Military Chaplain In June of 2009 I began my assignment as pastor of
St Therese Church in Montauk. Because Fr.
Charles Ehrhart, the previous pastor was retiring I
got a bonus: he stayed for a few days and gave me
some on the job training
As we walked the grounds so I could find out what
key goes where and begin to get a sense of things
like boilers and circuit breakers we had lots of time
to talk. He told me about his time in the military.
As a chaplain any time there was any maintenance
that needed to be taken care of all he had to do was
complete the appropriate requisition forms and it
would be done. This was all in the military budget.
But if he got transferred and there was maintenance
that had been neglected during his term, he was
financially responsible for it! He reminded me that
military transfers do not work on a schedule that
you can predict. You could be transferred at any
time. He told me, “You better believe I stayed on
top of the maintenance of things.”
“But of that day or hour, no one knows, neither
the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the
Father.”
Mk 13:32.
It seems that our life is kind of like Fr. Charles’
assignments in the military. If there is ever any
maintenance that has to be done on our heart or soul
as we live, we can get it done free of charge because
Jesus paid the price for our sins. But if our transfer
from this life to eternity comes and we have left any
of that maintenance unattended, we will have to
answer for it before God.
Advent is a time for us to recall that , since we do
not know the day or hour when God will call any
one of us home, maybe we should not put off any
maintenance to our hearts and souls.
When was the last time you celebrated God’s
unconditional love for you in the Sacrament of
Reconciliation? This sacrament is how we allow
Christ to pay for the maintenance of our hearts and
souls while we are alive. He died to forgive our sins
and he is waiting to share his loving embrace in this
sacrament.
In addition to our regular schedule of Confessions
(see front cover) we are having an Advent Penance
service on Tuesday December 23 at 7:00 PM in the
church. Why not come and celebrate the healing
loving embrace of Jesus in this wonderful sacrament
this Advent Season?
A Note from St. Joseph Parish Bulletin “Editorial Staff”
The parish bulletin is probably the best way to communicate with the community of St. Joseph Parish. It is our pleasure and pride to serve to this end. Please help us to do our job in the following ways…
The deadline for weekly bulletin submissions is usually Monday at 4:00 PM. In the case of a Monday holiday, please submit your copy by the Friday before at 4:00 PM.
Submit all copy as an “attached file” to an e-mail, including column submissions. Our address is [email protected].
Please use a “partial page” or a column article, rather than “full page flyers” for your event whenever possible.
Please do not ask us to “scan” your material for you. Most everything produced today is produced on a computer. Send us that file.
Your cooperation in these ways will help us produce the best quality results with the most
responsible stewardship of human resources and natural resources.

What is the symbolism of the four candles of Advent?
Traditionally, each of the four candles on an Advent wreath has their own meaning. The first Sunday of Advent symbolizes Hope with the Prophet's candle reminding us that Jesus is coming. The second Sunday of Advent symbolizes Faith with the Bethlehem Candle reminding us of Mary and Joseph's journey to Bethlehem. the third Sunday of Advent symbolizes Joy with the Shepherd's Candle reminding us of the Joy the world experienced at the coming birth of Jesus. The fourth Sunday symbolizes Peace with the Angel's Candle reminding us of the message of the angels: "Peace on Earth, Good Will Toward Men."
When Advent Wreaths are decorated the materials often have symbolic meaning. The use of evergreens reminds us of our eternal life with Christ, holly represents the crown of thorns from the Passion of Jesus, and pine cones symbolize Christ's Resurrection. They are all a constant reminder of what we are preparing for. (the Catholic Company).

“Let us build the City of God. May our tears be turned into dancing!”
Well... If there’s gonna be dancing, there ought to be music!
Here’s why Karen McCurry expresses her discipleship in song...
“He who sings, prays twice.” - St. Augustine… This quote made me stop and think about what being in choir means to me. It has afforded me the opportunity to worship the Lord through song and become a more active member of the parish community. I can honestly say that one’s prayer life can increase through song. Singing has worked wonders in my prayer life — it can do the same for yours.
(Karen is a chorister in our 10:30 choir.)
To join any of our groups, just speak to any musician or chorister after Mass.
Attention all boys and girls, 4th grade and up!
Do you want to grow in your relationship with God? Do you have a desire to assist the parish community at prayer? You should consider being an Altar Server. The qualities of a good altar server are the ability to follow directions and to think on your feet.
What is required to be an altar server?
1. You must be in 4th grade or above.
2. You must behave in a prayerful and attentive manner.
If you are interested in becoming a server, please have your parent complete the information form below and return it to the Rectory. You will be notified of dates and times for the training sessions.

New York State Election results:
Thank you for all of your efforts that lead to this week’s
election results. The post-election update from The New York
State Catholic Conference: Election results indicate that the
Republicans will take control of the State Senate, having won a
clear 32 majority (of the 63 seats). If Senator Felder (D)
continues to caucus with the Republicans (highly likely), that
makes it 33 GOP seats. And with Senator Ruben Diaz (D) certain
to vote pro-life, that makes a strong 34 votes against abortion
expansion.

Pope: Euthanasia, in vitro fertilization sins against God.
Vatican City – Pope Francis denounced the right to die
movement yesterday, saying it’s a “false sense of compassion” to
consider euthanasia as an act of dignity when in fact it’s a sin
against God and creation.
[Pope]Francis made the comments to the Association of
Italian Catholic Doctors.
Earlier this month, the Vatican’s top bioethics official
condemned as “reprehensible” the assisted suicide of an
American woman, Brittany Maynard, who was suffering terminal
brain cancer and said she wanted to die with dignity.
[Pope]Francis didn’t refer to the Maynard case specifically.
While denouncing euthanasia in general, he also condemned
abortion, in vitro fertilization (or “the scientific production of a
child”) and embryonic stem cell research (or “using human
beings as laboratory experiments to presumable save others.”)

The Giving is up in the lobby of the
church
Once again we are asking that you please donate gift cards rather than wrapped
gifts. When we give our clients gift cards they are able to experience the same joy of
selecting gifts for their family as we do in selecting gifts for ours. Many of our
generous parishioners have told us how much they enjoy purchasing gifts for the
Giving Tree.
For those of you who would still like to purchase a gift rather than give a gift
card, please know that a toy for children from ages 2–8 would be truly appreciated.
Please take an angel from the tree and return you gifts by December 15th to the
Outreach office or the Rectory.
your generosity allows others to
share in the spirit of the season.
ATTENTION GRADE 7 CONFIRMATION CANDIDATES: Many thanks to the Confirmation
Candidates that have volunteered their help (shared their gifts) at various St. Joseph Parish activi-
ties. Your presence and service means so much to our community. Each week, we look forward to
reading the “Works of Mercy” deeds that are faithfully being placed in the Offertory basket.
Hopefully everyone has chosen their Confirmation saint and has begun the Saint Report. Remember
that the chosen saint becomes a spiritual companion and guide. So… remember to pray with your
saint. Basically, all of the saints are part of our Christian extended family. They are those wonder-
ful relatives who are pray for you!
RELGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS…
During the season of Advent, most of our attention is focused, quite rightly, on the story of Jesus,
Mary, and Joseph. This wonderful liturgical season also offers other stories, ones that often go
overlooked: the stories of the saints.
For many people, the lives of the saints seem, frankly, boring or irrelevant. That's not surprising
given the way they're often depicted in churches: either as bland plaster statues that make them
look dull or as figures in dramatic stained-glass windows that make them look superhuman. The
saints were neither. In reading about the saints we quickly discover that they were truly human
people who led fascinating lives.
Other wonderful Advent saints include St. Francis Xavier (December 3), St. Nicholas,
(December 6), St. Ambrose (December 7), Blessed Virgin Mary, Immaculate Conception,
(December 8) St. Juan Diego (December 9), Our Lady of Guadalupe (December 12), St. Lucy
(December 13), St. John of the Cross (December 14), and St. Peter Canisius (December 21), St.
Stephen (December 26), St. John the Apostle (December 27), St. Thomas Becket (December 29),
and St. Sylvester (December 31).

A Journey Through Advent: Liturgical Cycle C
Get the most out of Advent and Christmas by following along with Fr. Robert Barron's homilies as he unpacks the profound Scripture readings for Liturgical
Cycle C.
The readings that correspond to the homilies on this CD were last heard in
Advent 2012.
Parishioner Comments
I loved this talk. I listened to all of them at once (at Epiphany) but learned so
much and was called yet again to reflect on myself and if I am truly preparing
myself as best I can for the 2nd Coming for Christ. I loved the Christmas homily too which really made me think about the Nativity story not just as 'Oh
the Christmas story of Christ's birth' but this is what this story shows of God's wonder and mystery! Michelle - Derby, KS
I really enjoyed that it was reflections on the readings from Mass. I suggest offering more CD's on this topic. Also Fr. Barron was excellent, so I suggest more of him too. Scott - Loveland, OH

Thanksgiving and Christmas. . .
When these two holidays come around each year, people become very charitable. It is truly wonderful to
see such an outpouring generosity and kindness with donations of food and gifts for those in need. Howev-
er, it is sad that we wait till this time of year to share what we have with others. There are people who need
help and assistance throughout the year. When a crisis, job loss or illness strikes a family, those who find
themselves in need often turn to Parish Outreach and Catholic Charities and your contributions to the
Catholic Ministries Appeal help to fund both. That in turn means that you are Building the City of God by
helping to feed the hungry, clothe the naked, care for the sick and aging, providing assistance with utility
bills, housing, medical expenses and so much more. Please, let us remember those who are in need not only
during the holidays, but throughout the year as well. Give a gift to support the Catholic Ministries Appeal.
