To Grow and Flourish The Philosophical, Psychological, Moral and Religious Perspectives on Education
In his work, To Grow and Flourish: The Philosophical, Psychological, Moral and Religious Perspectives on Education, Rev. Dr. Francis Samuel OIC in a masterly fashion explores the length and breadth of education and its impact on humanity as a very important tool for a person to fully realize his or her potential. The work seeks to provide a veritable handbook (vade mecum) not only to the students and teachers, but also to anyone interested in delving deep into understanding the mechanics and structures of a human intellectual capacity, and how we can grow and flourish to become the best version of ourselves, in line with the assertion of St. Irenaeus of Lyons: ‘glory of God is human being fully alive.’ In this way can our potential as human beings be fully realized, nay, able to transform the world.
True to fact, a well-educated person is a well-grounded person, and this involves a person in all aspects of a holistic individual. It is for this that our author in this work goes a long way in exploring the psycho-social and ethical dynamics of education. He argues and defends vigorously the view that education is all about growth and flourishing. Leaning strongly on psychologists, philosophers and educators, he taps into the strengths and weaknesses of their theories as he evaluates how they formulate the major principles of our great educational enterprise.
On a personal note, these pages provide a refresher course for me on my philosophy, psychology and education programs. One good special thing about the philosophical analyses given is that Thomas Aquinas who became a leading voice in shaping our Contemporary Thought and Christian intellectual thought-process today had a deep leaning on Aristotle, who himself was a student of Plato. So, it seems like a cyclic influence. Thomas argues that the major aim of education is the perfection of the human being. And the ultimate goal that forms a terminus ad quem (Final destiny) is union with God at the end. This is also in tune with arguments of John Dewey for whom education is for growth and development.
Paging through behaviorism of B. F. Skinner to the humanistic approach of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, we see the educational dynamics that are evident in the psychological analyses of these men. In the cognitive theories of learning, the author goes deep in making easy to understand Jean Piaget’s developmental psychology--a theory that addresses how a child’s thought-process develops through different stages in life. Not to be neglected in this review is the nature-nurture controversy that seeks to argue whether a development is predetermined by one’s biology and heredity or if it is affected by one’s experience and environmental factors. In toeing the line of many psychologists, we see how the dialectics of the nature-nurture issues complement each other.
A very important subject that could be of interest to many people is the subject of remembering and forgetfulness. In dealing with information-processing system, Dr. Samuel rightly argues and poignantly too, that information begins with input from the environment which registers in our short-term sensory register for few a seconds. The peripatetic axiom from Aquinas is very important here: ‘Nothing is in the intellect that doesn’t first go through the senses.’ The author goes on then to deal with how we store information in long-term memory and how we can recall, remember and use the material.
In the last chapter, based on his analyses of different schools of thought in philosophy, psychology, morality and religion, the author envisages an educational vision that is relevant for the 21st Century.
In the main, this work is not just a veritable resource for students and teachers but also a valuable asset for anyone interested in improving how to process information, assimilate and stimulate discourses on epistemological structures. It should form part of the agenda format for all involved in education. The author, therefore, proposes in a profound way, how to lean on education and knowledge in order to enhance our humanness, nay, grow and flourish to the best of our abilities. I recommend this work to all.

Reflections
Deacon’s Corner
I served as chaplain in the aftermath of 9/11 and ministered to the survivors of many who were lost there. I hope this poem will strike your heart as it does mine. ~ Deacon John
‘MEET ME IN THE STAIRWELL’ You say you will never forget where you were when you heard the news On September 11, 2011. Neither will I. I was on the 110th floor in a smoke filled room with a man who called his wife to say ‘Good-Bye.’ I held his fingers steady as he dialed. I gave him the peace to say. ‘Honey, I am not going to make it, but it is OK..I am ready to go.’ I was with his wife when he called as she fed breakfast to their children. I held her up as she tried to understand his words and as she realized he wasn’t coming home that night. I was in the stairwell of the 23rd floor when a woman cried out to Me for help. ‘I have been knocking on the door of your heart for 50 years!’ I said. ‘Of course I will show you the way home-only believe in Me now.’ I was at the base of the building with the Priest ministering to the injured and devastated souls. I took him home to tend to his Flock in Heaven. He heard my voice and answered. I was on all four of those planes, in every seat, with every prayer. I was with the crew as they were overtaken. I was in the very hearts of the believers there, comforting and assuring them that their faith has saved them. I was in Texas, Virginia, California, Michigan, Afghanistan. I was standing next to you when you heard the terrible news. Did you sense me? I want you to know that I saw every face. I knew every name-though not all know Me. Some met Me for the first time on the 86th floor. Some sought Me with their last breath. Some couldn’t hear Me calling to them through the smoke and flames; ‘Come to Me… this way… take my hand.” Some chose, for the final time, to ignore Me. But, I was there. I did not place you in the Tower that day. You may not know why, but I do… However , if you were there in that explosive moment in time, would you have reached for Me? Sept. 11, 2011, was not the end of the journey for you. But someday your journey will end. And I will be there for you as well. Seek Me now while I may be found. Then, at any moment, you know you are ‘ready to go.’ I will be in the stairwell of your final moments. ~GOD During the next 60 seconds, stop whatever you are doing, and take this opportunity. (Literally it is only 1 minute.) All you have to do is the following: Stop and think and appreciate God’s power in your life, for doing what you know is pleasing to Him. ‘Yes, I love my God. He is my fountain of Life and My Savior. He keeps me going day and night. Without Him, I am no one. But with Him, I can do everything. Christ is my strength.’
SEPTEMBER 11, 2019 As a nation, we are overwhelmed, it seems, with senseless mass murders, increasing teenage addictions, staggering suicide rates, mean spirited political debates, deteriorating family life, and other impediments to the lives we have been called to live. News stories draw our attention to such predicaments, yet no real remedies are offered. Over the past 70 years or so, we have turned away from the concept of a Supreme Being which has had devastating effects on the family, civility, and respect for life in all forms
Obviously now polarized, the future of this great nation resides in our collective ability to make concessions, find some common ground, and begin to rebuild the foundations which are our heritage. Many have debated the causes of the such devastating behaviors, and others have suggested ambiguous remedies.
I suggest the only way things will change will be with God's help. This will happen if more people pray. This will happen if children learn from any denomination the difference between right and wrong, the Golden Rule, and/or even common sense. The founding fathers knew religion develops a sense of confidence, and, as we grow older, we can then understand, appreciate, and carry out the way we should act.
The remembrance of September 11 this week will continue to stir memories in most of us who were stunned on that clear and beautiful Tuesday morning. We will recall the intense mourning (especially in our own Babylon community), some patriotic sentiments to again become the nation envisioned by our founding fathers, and our prayers asking God to help us heal. His Grace was with us at every turn, but, like so many things in our busy lives, is hardly noticed today.
Pope Francis calls us to evangelize. Let us start by being people of prayer. Let us ask that America will be”…one nation, under God…”

Hours of Adoration Monday 7 AM -9 PM; Tuesday 8 AM-9 PM;
Thursday 8 AM through Friday Midnight
We have Holy Hour every Wednesday at 5pm & Friday 3pm in
the Divine Mercy Chapel.
Remember our Brothers and Sisters
Your financial support is very important to us. Your financial help enables us to assist our brothers & sisters in need (with rent, electricity, oil, gas). Additionally, it allows us to run the homeless program with an $8 Deli voucher, so they can have a hot meal. We have faith in God that with your continued support of us financially, together we can all carry on with the mission that our Lord Jesus has entrusted us. Your generosity and compassion are heart-warming and very much appreciated.
Gift cards and Food cards
We could always use Grocery/Store Gift Cards (Aldi, Shoprite, Stop & Shop, Target, etc). With these cards families can buy perishable items that we do not have in our pantry, like eggs, milk, and also pay for their medications in the pharmaceutical department.
“For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me.”
Matthew 25:35
