We struggle for position in the hierarchy of power: Who has power over whom? How do they wield it? What is the source of that power? What is the healthy response? In this Sunday's Gospel reading the Pharisees engage Jesus in a power struggle over whether Jews should show tribute to Caesar by paying taxes. Jesus' response puts this and every struggle for power into perspective. In harmony with the words of Isaiah and Paul, Jesus teaches us that God is the ultimate source of all power--the power of earthly rulers, the Pharisees, Jesus, the Church, and the power within ourselves. PASTOR’S CORNER As the passage for today from the Gospel of Matthew reflects, we know that Jesus was plotted against and entrapped by the righteous religious Pharisees. Jesus must have great empathy for political candidates and government officials that endure such harmful manipulation. The question that arises that is of most importance is; what belongs to God? We all belong to God and the entire created world is God’s gift to us. Human beings are entrusted with the tremendous responsibility of sharing fairly and equitably the many gifts that only come to us from our loving God and Father. This isn’t about partisan politics. It is about recognizing that we are made in the image and likeness of our Creator. The potential we have is rooted in God’s deep love and generosity to us, in bestowing upon His human family this great dignity and opportunity. May we strive to live up to the challenge of respecting the life and dignity of all that God has created.

—Fr. Ed Stafford

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION What makes the Eucharistic Prayers for Masses with Children different from the others? First, there is the intended assembly, which is described as comprised of mostly children of school age. There are three Eucharistic Prayers for Masses with Children available to us now in the missal. The first one has a very simple form, easily grasped by even a young child. The second has a great deal of participation by the assembly--repeated sung acclamations. The third has a number of variations that can be tricky for a priest to handle if he hasn't prepared carefully. All of this work does point to a true treasure of our tradition: children are part of the Sunday assembly, precisely because they are baptized members of Christ's body. By contrast, the churches of the Reformation tend to look upon children as members in training, and see worship as an adult activity. Sunday school happens downstairs while the adults celebrate Holy Communion upstairs. In a phrase, that's not Catholic. Children belong to Christ and to the assembly. So, the desire to care for the children in the assembly, to draw them into the prayer, and to adapt our rituals and texts to their needs is deeply Catholic, a true pastoral effort to help draw everyone into the praise of God.

TODAY IS WORLD MISSION SUNDAY . . .

a day that leads us to the heart of our Christian faith – leads us to mission! Your generosity on World Mission Sunday supports the work of priests, religious and lay leaders in the Missions who share our faith with those most in need. This year we can even “chat” with our

chief missionary, Pope Francis, and learn more about his missions and missionaries. Learn more at ChatWithThePope.org. Chat – Pray – Give this World Mission Sunday.

IN REMEMBRANCE The Church has a long tradition of remembering those who have died, to the love and mercy of God. We do this in a special way on the Feast of All Souls’ Day observances and throughout November. Our Book of the Names of the Dead is in the Narthex during October for you to add the names of loved ones who have passed away.

This is a Holy Day of Obligation on which we celebrate the Church Triumphant -- all the Saints in Heaven, canonized or unknown. Let us rejoice in all the men and women, blest in the eyes of the Lord, who celebrate the heavenly liturgy. They stand in God's holy place and sing of the love the Father has bestowed upon them through the blood of the Lamb.

FIRST STEP FOR CHANGE Next weekend we will be wrapping up the First Step for Change campaign in our parish. Please remember to bring your filled baby bottle with you to Mass next week and drop off in the baskets in the Narthex. It is important that you bring your bottle back to church so that we can re-use it next year. Thank you for your cooperation. We thank the Mantua Knights of Columbus Council #3766 and the Kalman family for co-chairing this Catholic Charities effort.

GIFTS OF JERUSALEM Holy Land gifts will be here in the Narthex the weekend of October 28/29. There will be a display of handmade articles such as nativity scenes,

crucifix, rosary, the Last Supper, and many beautiful religious articles. Because of conflict in the region, many Christian families in Bethlehem are struggling to make ends meet. Holy Land Gifts represents over 100 Christian families who make a living selling traditional olive wood handcrafts and religious articles. When you purchase one of these beautiful gifts, you are helping artisans in the Holy Land provide for their families and live and work with dignity in a region fraught with tension. Thank you for supporting this project to keep the Christians present in the Holy Land of Jesus’ birth. For more info., please visit www.giftsofjerusalem.com.

COOKIE DONATIONS REQUESTED The Catholic prison ministry team at Trumbull Correctional Institution in Leavittsburg is holding a Spiritual Weekend Retreat November 2-5 for Catholic inmates. In addition to your prayers for their 6th successful weekend retreat, the ministry team is asking for donations of cookies. The participants love homemade cookies—the bigger the better! This is the only time they’re able to receive these special treats. To donate cookies, drop them off on disposable plates at the Parish Office absolutely no later than Wed., Nov. 1 (you may also bring them to the 7:00 p.m. Mass for All Saints). Please call the Parish Office (330-274-2253) or Pat Smith (330-274-8335) with any questions.

MAJOR CHURCH CLEANING It’s been quite a number of years since we’ve had a major cleaning of our worship space. As a jumpstart to all our holidays coming up and before we all get too busy with our own holiday preparations, we’re planning a cleaning day on Saturday, November 4, starting at 8:30 a.m. In addition to our faithful church cleaners, this event is open to all of our parishioners who would like to help. Also, a great opportunity for those needing service hours fulfilled. Tasks include wiping down the pews using Murphy’s Oil Soap, washing windows, and getting rid of as many cobwebs as possible. All cleaning products will be provided but rags and pails are needed. If you’d like to bring your special tools to clean with, by all means, do so. Pizza and drinks will be provided for lunch afterwards.

BEYOND THE PEW Be sure to check out Beyond the Pew, a YouTube video series from Ablaze Ministries. Ablaze was formed to minister to youth and reach out to parents. As the number one influence on children, parents shape and mold them in ways that will affect their entire lives. This includes their faith life. Parents set the example for their children of what it looks like to have a relationship with God. A short video is offered every week on a different topic so that they can grow in knowledge of the faith and have something to work with and pray with throughout the week. The hope is to equip parents with guides, tools, tips, and encouragement in leading kids closer to Christ. Please visit the Beyond the Pew link on our parish website or go to www.youtube.com/watch?v=_5UIEVBGTwM. GIVE TO GOD WHAT IS GOD’S You belong to Christ and Christ is God’s!
