STAND FIRM IN THE LORD It is not hard to imagine, in this age of wars, evil groups bent on the destruction of humanity, and po-litical follies, that the words of Saint Paul were so accurate, even for his time. It seems that the world never changes. Paul says, “Many . . . conduct them-selves as enemies of the cross of Christ. Their end is their destruction . . . Their minds are occupied with earthly things” (Philippians 3:18, 19). The result is the destruction of innocent people and of the Earth itself. But Paul says to the Philippians, “our citizen-ship is in heaven, and from it we also await a savior, the Lord Jesus Christ” (3:20). He will “change our lowly body to conform with his glorified body” (3:21). Note that he says “body” rather than “bodies.” He is talking about the whole community of believers, who, following the example of Jesus and of Paul, will come into the glory of God. So “stand firm in the Lord” (4:1). Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. __________________________________________

That we give God the “first fruits” of our gifts—our first and best time of prayer, charitable works in ministry participation and financial support of our parish mission and community outreach. “I have now brought you the first fruits of the products of the soil which you, O Lord, have given to me.” (Deuteronomy 26:10) This line from the Old Testament offers two chal-lenges. First, do you give to God from your “first fruits”, the best that you have to offer, or do you give from what is left over? Second, do you recog-nize that everything you have has been given to you by God? Ask God for a grateful and generous heart, every day , in all circumstances.

Elder Abuse Elder abuse can happen to anyone and it can take many different forms. Most cases of abuse reported to Adult Protective Services involve “self-neglect.” Many of these people are vulnerable to abuse be-cause they live alone or are dependent on someone else for their care. Texas requires by law the report-ing of elder abuse or the suspicion of elder abuse. If you know of someone who cannot care for himself/herself, or who is being abused, neglected or exploit-ed, whether they live alone or with a spouse or care-giver, Texas law requires that you report the abuse. The number is 1-800-252-5400; your report will remain confidential. For additional information, please contact the Office of Aging at 713-741-8712. __________________________________________

Embrace Your Mistakes

My significant other and I were discussing mistakes we have made in our rela onship. I suggested she should embrace her mistakes. She then hugged me! __________________________________________ IRELAND No reptiles are found there [in Ireland], and no snake can live there; for, though often carried thither out of Britain, as soon as the ship comes near the shore, and the scent of the air reaches them, they die. ______________________________________________

__________________________________________ TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION By now, many may have failed in Lenten disci-pline to some measure or another: the daily dough-nut is simply too alluring, or a furtive puff on a ciga-rette irresistible. There is meaning even in the fail-ure, though, a kind of reminder that we cannot save ourselves. Part of the power of Lent is that we do it together, and although individuals decide on differ-ent ways to keep it, it is fundamentally the same journey. We fall, we get up, we keep moving. The desire to “give something up” for Lent is an age‑old impulse in the Christian heart. We get better at it over the years, and move more deeply into the meaning and message of acts of sacrifice; so there is no shame in stumbling, as long as we are not dis-couraged by the failure and give up. We are clearing space in our lives, after all, and some of the things we desire to give up are worth rooting out complete-ly anyway. What do we do with the space we have cleared out by our sacrifice? The Lenten question of giving up is balanced by the Easter question of our re-sponse to Christ’s embrace of us in love: “What are you taking on for Easter?” —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Sta ons of the Cross Every Friday at 6:00 p.m.

During Lent

Instead of giving up “something”, why not do something extra — like coming to the Sta ons of the Cross on Friday evenings? _________________________________________
