Newsletter No. 1 Term 1 Week 8 25th March 2015 Kia Ora, Kia Orana, Malo e lelei, Talofa lava, Fakalofa lahi atu, hello and a

warm welcome to all our children and their families at our school. A special

welcome to Teuaki Kengike who started school this week. She is the younger

sister of Veronica and Lily and cousin of Fatongia.

As you are all well aware the BOT are very focussed on marketing our school to

the wider community and building our roll. We have established a marketing

team who meet regularly to discuss strategies we can implement. One of the first things we

achieved last week was designing a marketing flyer and getting them printed professionally.

A team of people handed these flyers out at Polyfest last week and we intend doing a big

mail drop over the holidays. The marketing team have a number of projects they are pursing

at the moment to make our school visible and known to the wider community. We will

update you regularly but would welcome your support in spreading the word about our

amazing school to your friends and family.

PRINCIPAL NEWS

Next term I will be on study leave. I was successful in winning an award to further my

study. I will be looking at other schools and how they build home and school partnerships. It

is an exciting opportunity for me to reflect, learn and relax a little for term 2. Mrs Victor will

be acting principal for term 2. We have appointed a new teacher, Miss Collins, in Room 5

while I am away. Mrs Lee will be acting deputy principal in my absence.

ST JOSEPH’S DAY

St Joseph’s Day was celebrated on the 19th March. The students had lots of

fun. We started with a liturgy reminding us about Joseph, the husband of

Mary, and the significant role he has played in our

lives. The students then went into clubs. We

finished the day with a sharing time in the hall and

our celebration cake.

I spoke with Father Iosefo recently about this day

and he informed me the Parish celebrate Joseph

the carpenter which is May. We will attend Mass on this day with

the Parish

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION – JESUS

Currently the children are working on the Jesus Strand. Some of the concepts

the student will develop are an understanding that Jesus is God, fully human

and fully divine – second person of the Trinity. They will identify various

ways Jesus Christ, the Risen Lord, is present today in the world and in the

church especially in the Sacrament of the Eucharist. Through their study of

Jesus, children will also gain and apply knowledge, skills, attitude and values

to understand that people who believe in Jesus through the grace of the Holy

Spirit are invited into a loving relationship with Jesus to follow him and live

his way through faith, hope and charity and with Tika-Justice, Pono-Integrity

and Aroha-Love

PTSG RAFFLE

The PTSG have organised an Easter raffle. Instead of chocolate eggs

they are raffling a Toshiba tablet and a small amount of Easter eggs.

This is a fantastic prize to win. All families have been given a book of 4

tickets to sell. Each ticket is $5.00. The raffle will be drawn on Holy

Thursday at 2.30pm. Please return all raffle butts and money to the

office before this date.

BUILDING PARTNERSHIPS / LEARNING EXPO

Parent interviews were held on Thursday March 12th. I must

congratulate our parents for the fantastic effort they made to

attend these important conferences. This is the first year 95% of

parents visited their child’s class teacher to talk about the

learning journey.

Today we have our first LEARNING EXPO for 2015. This is an opportunity for families to

see the learning in action. It has always been a successful afternoon of learning so we look

forward to seeing many of you here. The students are expected to stay at school until 5pm

today. Please come and visit your child’s class.

SJ DANCE CREW

Our dance group were invited to perform at Grey Lynn School’s Aloha Night. The students

were absolutely sharp with their moves and very exciting to watch. It was unfortunate our

group did not complete their routine because of a mix up with the sound equipment. Grey

Lynn Staff came and apologised to our students and staff on Monday. They realised our

students were upset on the day and wanted to make amends. As Christians we need to open

our hearts to the mistakes of others and forgive those who did us wrong. The students

welcomed the apology and I was very proud in the manner they used to handle this situation.

St Joseph’s students – You truly live the values of Compassion, Respect, Honesty and

Exccellence.

We have been invited back to Grey Lynn School to perform our dance routine at there

school assembly on Tuesday 31 March at 9.00am. Our students are happy to oblige.

Room 04 has been learning to write narratives. Narratives are stories that have an introduction, a problem and a conclusion where the problem is solved. Here are some of our narratives about Little Red Riding Hood.

Little Red Riding Hood

Once upon a time there was a little girl named Little Red Riding Hood. She lived in a hunted forest. She was getting her grandmother some muffins. Little Red Riding Hood went in her lovely house. She was “What big eyes you have”. She was frightened. – AVA TOKI (Yr2)

Little Red Riding Hood Once upon a time there was a little girl named Little Red Riding Hood. Her mother told Red Riding Hood to take her a basket of cupcakes. Her mother was ill. She saw a fat wolf. The wolf went to grandma’s house and the wolf knocked on the door. The wolf pretended to be Little red riding hood and the wolf said in a nice voice “come in then”. The wolf ate grandma up and then little red riding hood went to grandma’s house. Little red riding hood saw what big ears you have, what big teeth you have, what big eyes you have. The wolf ate Little red riding hood. – EPHESIANS UILI (Yr3)

Little Red Riding Hood Once upon a time there was a little girl. She lived in a haunted forest with her mum. Here mum said to her to take a basket of food to her grandmother who is sick. Then Little Red Riding Hood saw a bad wolf and then the wolf knock knock. Then grandmother said who’s there? It’s me Little Red Riding Hood in a sweet little voice. Then the wolf went to grandmother bed and ate grandmother up. The wolf was angry because he ate grandmother. – VERONICA KENGIKE (Yr3)

Room 04 has been learning to write narratives. Narratives are stories that have an introduction, a problem and a conclusion where the problem is solved. Here are some of our narratives about Little Red Riding Hood.

Little Red Riding Hood Once upon a time little red riding hood had to go to her ill nana. She lived in the deep woods. Then a mean wolf heard a sound. Little red riding hood was sad and the mean wolf wanted the basket of food and the wolf took the food. She was sad. The wolf ate the basket of food and little red riding hood found the fat wolf in a big cave. The wolf left the food and a handsome woodcutter killed the fat wolf. The handsome woodcutter was happy because the wolf was dead. – KENANI HOGLUND (Yr3) Little Red Riding Hood Once upon a time there was a little girl and her name was little red riding hood. She lived in a dangerous forest and her mum told her to go and take some delicious muffins to her grandmother. But little red riding hood saw a dangerous wolf and the wolf said to little red riding hood “Who is this for?”

Little red riding hood was frightened because the dangerous wolf was going to eat her. But Little red riding hood ran away and shouted “Wolf, Wolf, A wolf is going to eat me for morning tea”. Finally she ran away into a handsome woodcutter. The woodcutter said to little red riding hood “Whats wrong?” Little Red Riding Hood said a wolf is going to eat me and the woodcutter said “Where”. Later the wolf

jumped out of the trees and the woodcutter chopped the wolf head off. – SEBASTIAN SMITH (Yr3) Little Red Riding Hood

Once upon a time there was a little girl called little red riding hood. She lived in the haunted woods in the trees. She was giving a basket of green apples to nana. The Little Red Riding Hood went to the horrible woods. She saw a fat wolf and shrieked loudly. She shrieked “Help! Help! There is a wolf. It was trying to eat me for lunch and little red riding hood was very cross. Then she saw a crazy fat wolf pay back the wolf. That’s for eating my nana. That’s all you get. – DOMINIC PASINA (Yr3)

SCHOOL ATTENDANCE DUES SPONSORSHIP SCHEME The Attendance Dues Sponsorship Scheme - has been created to assist families who may need financial support with the payment of attendance dues, for students attending Catholic schools in Auckland Diocese, both primary and secondary. The purpose of the sponsorship scheme is to allow parents or caregivers facing financial hardship another option to seek relief where they may be reluctant to approach their school for help. The existing financial hardship scheme – operated by your school – is also available to parents or caregivers facing hardship and we do encourage families facing financial difficulties to please contact your school office. Application forms are available from school and parish offices, or can be down-loaded from the Catholic Schools Office Website: www.catholicschools.org.nz (go to Property and Finance / Finance / Attendance Dues) If you have any queries or require assistance with the payment of attendance dues under the sponsorship scheme, you are invited to phone in confidence, Carol Krebs (Ph. 360 3069) at the Auckland Diocese office. Applications to the sponsorship scheme for 2015 attendance dues will be accepted by the Auckland Common Fund Ltd up to November 2015.
