The Right to Life Scholarship Essay 2020 By: Carl Raymundo

When I was younger, I wanted to know who would deliberately make children. Children poop, cry and misbehave. Not to mention the fetus puts the mother in harsh pain. My mother said I kicked extremely hard, made her contract severely and that my big head was difficult to push out. So for the longest, I disliked the idea of children. However, God has shown me why life is important.

Originally, I didn't care about abortion. I believed that a woman has the choice of "her" body so I didn't think much about abortion. Also, I am a male. What right did I have telling a woman what to do?

Although I didn't care, God was telling me to choose pro-life, but I disregarded him. When I go to church, I am greeted by a huge banner with the face of an infant child peacefully sleeping with elegant words above that state "Choose Life." I see it every Sunday and Wednesday and never stopped to think about the sign. Also, I never stopped to ponder how many lives could have lived when glancing at the white crosses that symbolize the unborn babies. During Mass, several homilies have been dedicated to teaching the celebration of life. Reasons abortion is evil are acknowledged in these homilies with the number one reason that the creation of God is being exterminated. Additionally, my youth leader always tells me to choose life. Signs have been thrown at me, but I have ignored them.

The issue of abortion became important to me during the Texas Senate Election of 2018. One candidate was pro-life and one was pro-choice. Being a high school student and an immigrant, abortion was not my main concern. However, my

youth leader told me that life is the greatest gift God gives everyone. And by aborting a baby you are taking God's gift away and breaking one of God's ten commandments.

At that point, I was conflicted between two opposing sides. I wanted to choose pro-life, but I didn't want to. I was convincing myself that I am a man for its none of my concern or question what if it was rape or what if the mother is not ready to have children or what if the child would cost the mother's life. But a very special moment changed my view.

During Lent of 2019, I learned I was wrong about my opinion. Bishop Carmody came to visit and taught classes during lent. In the classes, Bishop Carmody discussed the importance and the power of the eucharist. He told that the eucharist is the body of Jesus and is the energy source that helps every one of us to spread the teachings of Jesus. According to Mark 16: 15 "He said to them, 'Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation."' Although I disliked the idea of a man choosing what a woman should do with her body, it is my job as a Christian to spread the teachings of the Lord. I learned that as a Christian I should embrace the gift of life for I was blessed. And it is not the woman's body, but God's body. So when I vote, I will choose pro-life because I am spreading God's message with my vote. And when there are pro-life rallies, I will pray for safety. Lastly, I will pray for those who are walking in the wrong direction. I pray that they may see a sign as I did and come back on the right path like I am now.

CHANGE - Lent is all about change and change is usually not easy. In order to change we have to leave something behind. Today we hear about a very old man who decides to answer God' s call. Abram experiences a tremendous amount of change when he leaves everything behind, risking it all for God' s promise. Jesus changes, is transfigured, right before the eyes of his disciples. The Lenten scriptures issue the call for us to change, to be transfigured, so that we, too, will soon share in the glory of God. What is it that the Lord is asking us to leave behind? Are we willing to take the risk for the promise made by God? These questions are at the heart of the Lenten journey of conversion. Copyright o J. S. Paluch Co.

From the Pastor's Desk Dear Friends,

Brian Blessed is a larger-than-life English actor, famed for his booming voice and also for his adventures, including climbing mountains. He once went on an expedition into the jungles of Venezuela, during which he survived a plane crash; and he was the oldest man to walk to the North Magnetic Pole. He has succeeded in climbing Mount Aconcagua in Argentina and Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, and has attempted Mount Everest three times without oxygen. He is a fully trained astronaut and on the waiting list to travel to the international Space Station. He is now over eighty.

He once paid a lovely tribute to his parents: "My parents taught me honesty, truth, compassion, kindness to care for people. Also, they encouraged me to take risks, to boldly go. They taught me that the greatest danger in life is not taking the adventure at all. To have the objective of a life of ease is death. I think we have all got to go after our own Everest." He was fortunate to have had parents like that, and it is interesting that he links together truth, compassion and kindness with taking risks and hardships, like climbing Mount Everest.

Last week we heard how the devil took Jesus up a high mountain to tempt him. And in the Gospel today Jesus led Peter, James and John up a high mountain. High mountains are dangerous, people die on them; climbers need stamina, determination and strength. Abraham was called by God to an adventure even more challenging than Brian Blessed's expedition. The Lord told Abraham to leave his homeland and his family, and travel into the unknown. It was to be a life involving great hardships and sacrifice. It is the same struggle that many Christians grapple with as they seek their vocation in life.

After their exhausting climb up the high mountain, the apostles were rewarded with a vision that is unimaginable to most people. They glimpsed the glory of heaven and were told not to describe it to anyone else until after Jesus had risen from the dead, even though at the time, as Mark tells us in his account of the same story, they could not understand what "rising from the dead" might mean. They saw Jesus in his heavenly glory. And they saw the great prophets of old, Moses and Elijah, whose words they knew so well from the scriptures, in glory too.

Despite their pleading to be allowed to build three tents and stay there, to extend their clarity of vision and certainties, Peter, James and John had to go down from the mountain, into the realm of faith rather than sight, the way of struggling rather than illumination. What they were given is what we have been given, in every age of the Church: the voice of the Father, telling us, "Listen to him." It was what Our Lady had learned as well, when she said to the steward of the wedding feast at Cana, "Do whatever he tells you." When St. John Henry Newman wrote about faith, he stressed that faith is not just about good thoughts, but about "doing". "What is living faith? ... works, deeds of obedience, are the life of faith," he said.

Zach
