Sessions will be on the Friday before each Sunday of Advent. The last Advent Soup Supper will be December 21. We will start in the church at 5:00 PM with the Rosary and scriptures. The supper

will start at 5:30 PM with a short introduction to the topic for discussion, in which Christians of all ages can participate. A non perishable food item can be brought for the food pantry or a free will offering opportunity will be pro-vided. Come and share a meal with your parish family.

Religious Give Thanks

“This money is pure gift,” writes a religious sister of the support made possible by the Retirement Fund for Religious”. “It enables us to continue providing care for our elderly sisters.” Your gift to last week’s collection helps hundreds of religious communities meet pressing retirement needs while continuing to serve the People of God. Thank you for your generosity!

Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner? - 2019

Back by popular demand, the Parish Life Committee is sponsoring this fun event. Mark your calendars for Sunday, January 27, 2019. Details will come later, in the bulletin. Right now, we are in need of couples or singles to host a dinner group of other adult parishioners. You decide how many people you are comfortable hosting, and then prepare the entrée and provide drink. Your guests will provide salad and/or vegetable. After the meal, everyone meets up at the Church Hall for dessert. The fun part is that no one will know who is in their dinner party until they all show up! Hosts don’t know, and guests are only provided the address and what kind of food item to bring. This is a fun way to meet some of your fellow parishioners other than just seeing them on your way in or out of church! So if hosting might be for you, now is the time to call or email Sharron Konzen, at 319-350– 9861 or [email protected].

Your wonderful smile and friendly greeting is needed at our door! St. Joe’s is looking for warm and welcoming folks to be door greeters for the various Masses. On the job training is available! Please contact Patty Kelly at [email protected] if you are interested.

Advent Reflections

Lord in you we rejoice with thanksgiving and praise.

Your peace comes to stand guard at our hearts and minds.

You renew us in your love;

empower us with strength and courage.

Vigilant for your star,

awaiting God to be with us-Emmanuel.

Amen

Blessing of a Manger or Christmas Scene - Don’t forget to ask God’s blessing on your Christmas crèche. Please find some information and a blessing below.

In its present form the custom of displaying figures depicting the birth of Jesus Christ owes its origin to St. Francis of Assisi, who made the Christmas crèche or manger for Christmas Eve of 1223. When the manger is set up in the home, it is appropriate that it be blessed by a parent or another family member.

* * *

All make the sign of the cross as the leader says: Our help is in the name of the Lord. R/. Who made heaven and earth. One of those present or the leader reads a text of sacred Scripture, for example, Luke 2:1 (lines 1-8) or Isaiah 7:10 (lines 10-15, the birth of Emmanuel).

Reader: The Gospel of the Lord. R/. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. The leader prays with hands joined: God of every nation and people, from the very beginning of creation you have made manifest your love: when our need for a Savior was great you sent your Son to be born of the Virgin Mary. To our lives he brings joy and peace, justice, mercy, and love. Lord, bless all who look upon this manger; may it remind us of the humble birth of Jesus, and raise our thoughts to Him, who is God-with-us and Savior of all, and who lives and reigns forever and ever. R/. Amen. —From Catholic Household Blessings & Prayers

Advent Spirituality—It occurred to me as I was reflecting on the same themes of Advent that have been presented to

us for years--like prepare, repent, the coming of Christ at Christmas and at the end of the world—that this season is

presenting and modeling to us a spirituality that is the Christian way of life.

As Jesus is the foundation of our lives, so we look to and for him always. We live our lives according to the ultimate

end of the believer, which is eternal life. But, the stuff, the mundane, the distractions, challenges and tragedies of life

get in the way of seeking Jesus. We make mountains that distract us from seeing Jesus and lack a vigilance for his

coming which opens our lives to be corrupted through sinful choices. There is always a need to be vigilant because it

is easy to be diverted from the way the believer is called to walk with Christ. We are to travel the way of the narrow

gate and not the wide boardwalk of perdition the world presents and offers.

God sends people like John the Baptist to us in order to wake us up regarding how our lives are being lived. He

reminds us of how God reaches out to us, ultimately through his son who became incarnate, in order to free us from

the bondage we have to ourselves, the world and our own sinfulness. We see God’s tenderness, his pity, the gut

feeling he has for humanity which moves him inexorably towards it, as we prepare to celebrate the birth of a small,

vulnerable child. Advent takes us through the nine month gestation period of a child in utero in a way that

encapsulates the millennia of teaching and hope of the Chosen People looking forward to the birth of the Messiah.

Their story becomes ours as we assimilate their hopes, fears, dreams, tragedies and triumphs. They become our

mirror in which we see ourselves and the mighty, patient, meticulously planned actions of God to bring Christ to us.

Take whatever God gives you during this season and incorporate it into your life. The graces will be abundant and

the effects not only be noticeable, but will open your mind and heart and motivate you to live your faith differently

and in greater alignment with Christ.
