Note from the St. John's Holiday Food Program Committee

Last year's Holiday Food Program (Thanksgiving and Christmas) fed nearly 75 families, or nearly 400 members, in our Community. Preparations are underway to once again serve our neighbors in need. As you know, 2020 has not been kind to many.

Facing the many challenges posed by the Pandemic, as well as rising food costs, this years challenge is even greater than last. And with the modification of the Parish's annual fundraising event, Our Spaghetti and Meatball Dinner (ingredients to go—no in-hall dining), the Holiday Food Committee is faced with raising even more money through private donations.

The Committee is proud to remind everyone that one hundred percent (100%) of all donations goes directly to purchasing food for the Holiday dinners.

We are asking any individuals, families, or businesses to please sponsor a Holiday dinner(s) for a family in need. The cost is $100 per dinner. These food/dinner donations also provide staples (ie: peanut butter and jelly, mayo, macaroni and cheese, etc) that go beyond providing just one meal for the family.

We realize these are challenging times for everyone, and if sponsoring a full dinner is a stretch this year, please consider purchasing part of a Holiday dinner. Every donation helps, and no donation is too small.

For those interested and able, you can contribute to purchasing part, or a full food category used in the dinners. There is the opportunity to purchase the: turkeys, fresh fruit/vegetables, canned goods, or desserts for an entire Holiday.

See our insert for a list of the Holiday Food Program costs and the options available for supporting this very important Holi-day Food Program and our flyer for our “Endless PASTAbilities” Spaghetti and Meatball Dinner—Ingredients to Go!!!

Checks and donations can be mailed to: St. John's Parish, 12 Holly Hills Drive, Woodstock, NY 12498, dropped off at St. John’s Rectory (Tues., Wed., Thurs., 10am-3pm), Woodstock Hardware or the West Hurley Service Center, or Give Online at www.sjwoodstock.org Holiday Food Basket Fundraiser or on our facebook page too!

Remember to order your Spaghetti & Meatball Dinner Ingredients to Go by October 18th! The dinner includes Joe’s Homemade Sauce, Homemade Desserts, Box of Pasta, Meatballs and Fresh Bread with GF & V options available too! Vegan sauce/meatballs prepared by The Green Palate! See our flyer for more details!! Cost is $10 per dinner box and $5 for extra sauce!!!

Thank you for helping to make this Program a success.

THE GIFT OF THE REIGN OF GOD

Matthew’s Gospel today expands on Isaiah’s ballad considerably. A comparison with the same story in Mark’s Gospel clearly shows us that here the author is busy teaching this community of Jewish Christians: “This is a story about Israel a long time ago; this is also a story about Jesus and the skeptical leaders.” Jesus as much as told these Jewish leaders that they were the tenants who first stoned their own prophets. And he told the leaders they were the tenants who would soon even dispose of him—Jesus—and, in doing so, would forfeit their privileged place of presenting to the world the promised Messiah. “And this,” says Matthew’s Gospel, “is a story about you, the inheritors of what was first offered to Israel.” The reign of God was first opened to Israel and is now given to the whole world, but it must be received as a gift. The first Christians are the new tenants in the vine-yard. The deeper reality of the reign or kingdom of God is that it is available to everyone on the face of the earth—Israel included.

Blessings, Fr. Thomas Kiely

The Religious Education Program for St. John's has classes for K-8 for the 2020-21 school year. The catechists/teachers are planning a combined home school & by grade in-person sessions.

Thank you to everyone for your support, love and dedication to our Religious Education Program. During the Month of Sep-tember - we were blessed to have 7 students receive the Sac-rament of First Holy Communion and 17 students receive the Sacrament of Confirmation. Please continue to pray for our children and each other. Thank you, Alice Haberski, Coordinator Grades K-8

Each October the Church in the United States celebrates Re-spect Life Month, and the first Sunday of October is observed as Respect Life Sunday. As Catholics, we are called to cherish, defend, and protect those who are most vulnerable, from the beginning of life to its end, and at every point in between. “No Catholic can responsibly take a "pro-choice" stand when the "choice" in question involves the taking of innocent hu-man life.” Resolution on Abortion (1989) National Conference of Catholic Bishops Action: You're invited to join Catholics nationwide in cele-brating Respect Life Month this October with the message "Live the Gospel of Life"! As we celebrate the 25th anniversary of John Paul II’s encyclical The Gospel of Life, learn how you can respond to His summons to “respect, protect, love and serve life, every human life!” Learn more at https://www.respectlife.org/2020.
