From the desk of Vicar Rob The great Bon Jovi once said “Woah, we're halfway there. Woah, livin' on a prayer.” Can you believe that my internship here at St. John’s is already half over? I’ve been here for 11 months now and I only have 11 more to go. It’s hard to believe that I’ve already hit this milestone. I have grown so much and learned a lot from working with Pastor Mark and I know I have so much more to learn from him as I start the second half of this internship. I never thought my internship would include how to minister during the time of a pandemic or doing worship exclusively online, but here we are. I was put in charge of the spiritual gifts initiative, which unfortunately has been pushed to the back burner for the time being. As all of know, I had planned on starting up a theology pub ministry this month, but with social distancing and uncertainty in the restaurant industry, that too has been pushed to the back burner. So many great ideas, but unfortunately, I won’t be able to do them. That is except for one of them. Part of the internship experience is to put together a ministry project. It can either be a one and done type thing or something for the longer term. My original plan for this project had to be scrapped just like everything else because of the pandemic. I had planned on doing a day of public service, along the lines of God’s Work Our Hands, but to be held in the spring with help and input from the larger community. But alas, it was not meant to be, but as the saying goes, when one door closes, another one opens. Moving to worshipping online exposed a great opportunity for the church; to be able to reach out to the community better and bring back something old in a new way. I learned a while ago that St. John’s used to broadcast Sunday worship on public access television. With the current pandemic moving us online, I want to continue this into the future, beyond when we reopen. My new project is to take our small, scrappy operation and scale it up with better equipment and a farther reach. I know this is possible because throughout the last couple months I’ve received positive feedback about what we have been doing and a general interest to keep it going and help with the process. The great Bon Jovi once said “Woah, we're halfway there. Woah, livin' on a

prayer.” Can you believe that my internship here at St. John’s is already half

over? I’ve been here for 11 months now and I only have 11 more to go. It’s

hard to believe that I’ve already hit this milestone. I have grown so much

and learned a lot from working with Pastor Mark and I know I have so

much more to learn from him as I start the second half of this internship. I

never thought my internship would include how to minister during the time

of a pandemic or doing worship exclusively online, but here we are.

I was put in charge of the spiritual gifts initiative, which unfortunately has

been pushed to the back burner for the time being. As all of know, I had

planned on starting up a theology pub ministry this month, but with social

distancing and uncertainty in the restaurant industry, that too has been

pushed to the back burner. So many great ideas, but unfortunately, I won’t

be able to do them. That is except for one of them.

Part of the internship experience is to put together a ministry project. It can

either be a one and done type thing or something for the longer term. My

original plan for this project had to be scrapped just like everything else

because of the pandemic. I had planned on doing a day of public service,

along the lines of God’s Work Our Hands, but to be held in the spring with

help and input from the larger community. But alas, it was not meant to be,

but as the saying goes, when one door closes, another one opens.

Moving to worshipping online exposed a great opportunity for the church;

to be able to reach out to the community better and bring back something

old in a new way. I learned a while ago that St. John’s used to broadcast

Sunday worship on public access television. With the current pandemic

moving us online, I want to continue this into the future, beyond when we

It is with both sadness and understanding that I need to inform you of the Thursday

Music Club’s decision to cancel this year’s Handbell Festival due to the

Coronavirus Pandemic. Large group assemblies will most likely still be prohibited

this Fall, with the hopes that 2021 will bring more of a return to our more normal

routines. The Christmas Messiah concert, slated for this December, has also been

cancelled. These decisions were not made lightly nor impulsively. I completely

agree with the decisions and support the club’s actions. The date for our next

Handbell Festival will be Sunday, November 21st, 2021, ‘Lord willing and the

creek don’t rise.’

And now for some better news. The Zanesville Concert Association has worked on

bringing the Raleigh Ringers, a professional handbell group that gives concerts all

around the country, to Secrest Auditorium on Saturday, March 19th, 2022 at 7:30

pm. My calendar does not quite go that far ahead, but to get a professional

handbell group such as the Raleigh Ringers to Zanesville will stick in my memory

until they are here preforming. Much thanks to the Concert Association and Jim

McLaughlin for making this possible.

Chuck Archer

Author Jim Wallis tells how his young son ends telephone conversations with him.

“Daddy,” the boy says, “I love you, I like you and you’re incredible.”

What makes an “incredible” father? It isn’t as difficult as it might seem. Children,

of course, aren’t awed by the size of your paycheck, office or retirement account.

Instead, it’s the simple, everyday gestures that make you a No. 1 dad.

In Stories for the Family’s Heart, Steve Stephens offers some sure-fire ways to be

incredible in your kids’ eyes:

• Play tic-tac-toe and hide-and-seek.

• Be consistent.

• Buy ice cream cones.

• Don’t discipline in anger.

• Count stars together.

• Pray with (and for) your children.

• Hug and say “I love you” often.

Christ’s Table continues to serve meals to our community during social

distancing and St. John’s members continue to volunteer the last Monday of

each month. Meals are packaged in to-go containers and picked up at the

back of the building. (Volunteers serve from the delivery area of the

building as people come from the parking lot to pick up containers.

Christ’s Table continues to send homebound meals on their regular routes

daily. They continue to serve an increased number of to-go meals as

compared to numbers served prior to the Coronavirus pandemic.

St. John’s date to serve in June is June 29. Volunteers are asked to arrive

by 10:30-10:40. We serve meals until 1:00.

Thanks to our faithful volunteers! Anyone planning to help serve in June is

asked to call Barb Stoneburner by June 24. (There’s always room for new

people who are interested in volunteering!)

New time for Worship Beginning June 7

th and going forward our Worship Service will begin at

9am on Facebook Live. The service will continue to be conducted in the

main sanctuary, and the earlier time,

we hope will be a little cooler, and more comfortable for Pastor Mark,

Vicar Rob, and Mark Pinnick during the upcoming summer days. If you are

unable to join us at 9am the service can be viewed on our Facebook page at

any time after that.

We invite you to join us on June 7th

when ELCA Presiding Bishop

Elizabeth Eaton will be giving the sermon for this service. Bishop Eaton

was recently on CNN discussing returning to church and emphasized that

“the church has never been closed.” We look forward to Bishop Eason’s

message to all of the ELCA congregations she serves.
