St. John’s Parish Visitor
Rector’s Journal… “By Word and Example” by The Rev. C. Earl Mahan, Rector
Will you proclaim by word and example the Good News of God in Christ? I will, with God’s help.
(From “The Baptismal Covenant” / The Book of Common Prayer)
These words from the Baptismal Covenant speak to our understanding of what the Christian life is to be, the shape it is to have in the world in which we live. It is “Good News” in the form of the words people speak and in the form of deeds people carry out. Yet, implicit in this is the understanding that none of us dare attempt this on our own. Rather, whatever we proclaim, whatever we do, we say it and we do it together, in community, as the Church. Yet, the landscape of the Church has changed in our culture. The model of one church / one pastor or priest, such as we enjoy here at St. John’s Church, is no longer the norm. The days when you counted on people, most people, being connected out of obligation to a community of faith, most likely the same church or denomination that their parents and grandparents before them had attended, are all but gone. In her 2012 book (which I wholeheartedly recommend), “Christianity After Religion,” author and scholar Diana Butler Bass, sifts through and analyzes mountains of data from past and recent years to demonstrate what this change looks like. One group of statistics she mentions, speaks volumes to understanding the changed religious landscape we are facing.* In 1960, “nones”, people unaffiliated with any traditional religious beliefs and practices, be they Protestant, Catholic, Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, Hindu, Unitarian, or “Other”, barely registered in polling data. By 1972 they had risen to 5% of the population. Today, depending on the survey used, some 16 – 20% of the population in our country falls into the “nones” or “unaffiliated”, making them roughly equal in number to Protestants (16-18%), and slightly fewer than Roman Catholics (23%) and evangelicals (26%). Most telling perhaps, of the 16-20% who fall into the “nones” category, 25-30% of them are under the age of 30. * (Christianity After Religion: The End of Church and the Birth of a New Spiritual Awakening, by Diana Butler Bass) The holy season of Lent, which begins early this year on Ash Wednesday, February 10th, affords the people of God an opportunity to prayerfully consider what this means for our collective life together. Far from being a season focused on individualistic notions of piety, Lent is a time to reflect on the meaning of community, community in God in Christ. It also allows us to prayerfully discuss with one another what our common shared witness, by “word and example,” might need to look like in such a rapidly changing religious and cultural reality. How do our words and how might our examples impact our neighbors, family, and friends who are rightly counted among the “nones?” How might we need to rethink church “membership” in a time when affiliation is not about obligation, but about choice? I hope that you will be part of the conversation by attending our annual Lenten Luncheon and Speaker Series. St. John’s has invited church leaders from within the Episcopal Church, here in Kansas, whose ministries and experiences may help us all, together, think about what the Church can, and must, become as we minister to the world God so loves. Peace + Fr. Earl Mahan

ST. JOHN’S ALTAR GUILD MINISTRY LOOKING FOR NEW PARTICIPANTS
With the new year have come new changes for the Altar Guild.
If you've ever wondered how the Altar is set every week;
If you've ever wondered what all the 'Holy Hardware' is, how it is used, the meanings for each
piece, how it is cleansed and how we store them;
If you've always wondered about the beautiful sanctity surrounding our Holy Linens;
If you find yourself wanting to serve our beautiful church at least once a month, oiling of our
beautiful woodwork 2 times a year, and serving during the Holiest of weeks in our church year
(Lent-Easter and Christmas);
THEN ALTAR GUILD MAY BE FOR YOU!!
I would personally invite any and all members to prayerfully consider if this may be a calling for
you.
I understand completely "adding one more thing" to a commitment list. So please, let me offer this:
Each team member is well-qualified to assist you with exploration of our Altar duties.
Most members will clean and set the Altar on Saturday morning of their respective weekend.
Being at the church more frequently offers multiple opportunities to experience the beauty of our Lord's
table.
If you would like to 'quietly' explore, please, join the Altar Guild member after a 10:30 a.m. service, during
clean-up! Contact any one of our members to coordinate a time to observe, shadow, serve. All members'
contact information are in our directory, or available through the Parish office, 262-0897.

Presiding Bishop Michael Curry’s Christmas Message 2015
(The following is the transcript of the Presiding Bishop’s video Christmas message, December 22, 2015.)
“Hello. Our original plan was for me to tape a Christmas message in front of the United Nations building in New York as a way of sending a message that this Jesus of Nazareth whom we follow came to show us the way to a different world, a world rounded in God’s peace and God’s justice, God’s love and God’s compassion.
I recently had surgery and so we had to change those plans and so I’m here in Raleigh on Capitol Square. Christ Church is here and we’re filming this message here just as a way of giving me a chance to say “Thank you” to all of you who sent cards and prayers in my recent surgery. I’m doing well and I’m coming back to work.
But I did want to say something to you. It occurs to me that this Jesus of Nazareth really does make a difference. And God coming into the world in the person of Jesus matters profoundly for all of us regardless of our religious tradition.
In the park across from the United Nations, the Ralph Bunche Park, the words of the Prophet Isaiah are quoted,
They will beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks
Nation will not rise against nation
Neither shall they learn war any more
What’s not there is another part of that passage that’s in the second chapter of Isaiah, and it says,
Come, let us go to the mountain of God,
That he may show us His ways and teach us His paths
We who follow Jesus believe that the mountain came to us when God came among us in the person of Jesus to show us the way to live, to show us the way to love, to show us the way to transform this world from the nightmare it often is into the dream that God intends for us all.
So, as the words were spoken on that night when Jesus was born, peace, good will to all people, God bless you, God keep you. A blessed Advent, a Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year to all.”
The Most Rev. Michael Curry Presiding Bishop and Primate The Episcopal Church

St. John’s History by Parish Historian, Katie Pott
January — it must be time for the Annual Parish Meeting!
But it wasn’t always so. At the 12th Annual Diocesan Convention, May 10 & 11, 1871, Canon IV declares:
On Easter Monday of each year there shall be in each parish an election of a vestry to consist of two wardens
who shall whenever practical be communicants and not less than three or more than seven vestrymen. Our
first parish meeting was held on Tuesday, October 4, 1870 to sign the Charter and elect wardens and
vestrymen. John P. Hilton, St. John’s Lay Reader, sent a parochial report to the 1871 Convention stating
“families, 20; marriages, 1; burials, 2. Total of contributions, $9.69. “I commenced to hold the services twice
every Sunday in April, 1870, and continued till December, when we had to suspend them as the log church
where I was holding services was too cold and damp — only having a sawdust floor and we had no means to
dry or warm it. On Easter Sunday I commenced services in a large room, and find a growing interest in the
Episcopal services, and a better attendance. An active and ordained minister is much needed here. We have
six town lots donated to build a church on; also two others for the benefit of same church, and about $700
subscribed, but not yet collected, towards the new building.”
1872: The Wichita City Eagle reports “At a meeting of Episcopal Church Society, held on April 1,” and names the vestry and wardens elected.
1887: Easter Monday, April 11. The names of those nominated for wardens and vestrymen and the
number of votes for each are reported. This practice is continued for many years.
1888: Easter Monday, April 2. A clerk of the vestry in the 1950s ended with the adjournment and “Peace
and harmony prevailing.” Not always so. The minutes of 1888 end with a signature not matching that of the
person named. Edward Vail writes “At this meeting the record of which was written up afterwards by some
other person. I strongly opposed the making of the foregoing mentioned loan. I was never in favor of making
the loan and always opposed it.
1889: Easter Monday, April 21. “Parish Meeting of St. John’s church pursuant to custom and
announcements from the chancel convened at eight o’clock in the evening. . . . A motion was made that
there be an expression of opinion, with reference to the calling of a rector at an early date. The object of this
motion having been obtained meanwhile by conversational discussion . . . General opinion was in favor of
leaving the vestry untrammeled by definite instructions; supposing that, the Bishop’s advice being had, a
suitable rector could be obtained during the Summer, by leaving the vestry free to exercise its discretion.
1905: November 27 [annual meetings held in November since 1899]. After organizations reported, the
Rector Dr. P. T. Fenn made an address to the parish in general and especially spoke at length concerning the
short-comings of some of his Vestrymen. Accusing Mr. Brown of trying to use his influence in preventing one
person from joining the confirmation class. The Doctor seemed to get a little warmed at this juncture and
launched off into a tirade, accusing a brother clergyman of Fraturism [delusions of grandeur, belief that you
are God or have higher powers] etc. The Sr. Warden, Junior Warden and some of the Vestrymen were
praised but in a rather half hearted manner. The future policy of the Rector was then outlined — being “We
will fight it out on this line, if it takes all summer” policy. He asked the people to come to his aid and elect a
vestry that would be in line with his policy. The Dr. also said he would refuse to admit to Communion any
one who (in the future) goes out of the Diocese for the purpose of Confirmation. He stated that under no
circumstances would he present his resignation and read the canon wherein when a minister is once called to
a parish he is called (practically) for life. Mr. Brown then rose and said he denied the statement made by Dr.
Fenn that he had tried to use his influence to prevent the Confirmations of anyone. That he had always tried
to act as his duty seemed to demand. [After elections] Mr. Brown thanked the people for the handsome manner in which they had vindicated him of the vile charges of the Rector by reelecting him to the position of
Vestryman.
