The Catholic Church teaches that when an indisputable pronouncement of death has been made, donation of organs can commence.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church states that organ transplants are in conformity with the moral law if the physical and psychological dangers and risks to the donor are proportionate to the good sought for the recipient. Organ donation after death is a noble and meritorious act and is to be encouraged as an expression of generous solidarity. Organ Donation continued:

performed in an ethically acceptable manner, with a view to offering a chance of health and even of life itself to the sick who sometimes have no other hope” (“Evangelium Vitae,” No. 86).

The Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care Services (ERDs) based on the principle of totality (body parts are ordered for the good of the whole, and may be disposed of, if necessary, for the good of the whole) affirm that organ donations from the living is a noble and charitable act, while specifying at the same time that the donation will not sacrifice or seriously impair and essential functioning of the donor. It added that to avoid conflicts of interest the physician determining death ought not be a member of the transplant team (Directives, 64).

May 2011, observed that the morality of the self-giving of vital organs depends on how the acting person relates himself in his freely chosen act to the great goods of healthy functioning and life itself. If the harm (including the mutilation) suffered by the donor — but in no way intended either by him or those involved in the transplant — does not impair his functional integrity, the evil suffered is an unintended side-effect of an act of self-giving, a morally good act. However, were the donor’s own functional integrity and hence his own health and life to be impaired, it would be wrong for him to choose to give it because the means he would choose, endangering his own health and life, is bad although intended for a good end, but one can never intend or choose evil for the sake of good to come.In all, the Catholic Church applauds and encourages organ donation as a morally good act of self-giving. Although there have been advances in medical technology, the demand for organ, eye and tissue donation still vastly exceeds the number of donors.

Sta t s AND Fac t s :• 115,000 men, women and children await lifesaving organ transplants.

• Even the largest football stadium in the U.S. could not fit the number of patients on the national transplant waiting list.

• Every 10 minutes another person is added to the national transplant waiting list.

• 22 people die each day because the organ they need is not donated in time.

• 8,000 deaths occur every year in the U.S. because organs are not donated in time.

• 82% of patients waiting are in need of a kidney.

• 1 out of 3 deceased donors are over the age of 50.

• If you donated your organs you would save up to 8 lives.

• If you donated your corneas you would restore sight to 2 people.

• If you donated your tissues you would heal the lives of 75 people.

• In 2016, 33,600 transplants brought new life to patients and their families.

• 683,000 transplants have taken place since 1988.

Being SOCIALLY Resp o n s i b l e : The Catholic Church considers organ donation to be a final act of compassion and generosity. 95% of Americans are in favor of being a donor but only 54% are registered. For more information visit: www.donatelife.net

POEM ABOUTDONATING LIFE

Sometimes life can break a heart, it cannot stand the

strain. But no one lives a life, we know that does not have

some pain. There are so many people, so many broken hearts, needing

just a little help, perhaps a few spare parts.

Your gift can save a mom or dad or help a child survive.

You can mend a broken heart and keep someone alive.

Your life can keep on giving even when you’re gone. You will go on living as someone

else lives on.You see, there are so many lives that you can help to mend. Be the gift, have a heart, be the

one to save a life, and your life will live again.Daniel Mark Extrom

Thinking about joining the Catholic Church, but feel a little lost? The RCIA inquiry stage is the starting place for adults who are thinking about entering the Catholic Church.“Be still, and know that I am God.” — Psalm 46:10In the inquiry stage, you’re just finding out about Jesus, Christianity, and the Catholic Church. Talk to people, walk around in our shoes for a bit and get a feel for the place. As an inquirer, you’re not yet sure exactly what you think about the Catholic Church. Your main task here is to develop your faith a little bit, get to know Christ, prayer, the Catholic Church, and how Christians live. That’s the only way you can make an informed decision about entering the Catholic Church.

Have you received the Sacrament of Confirmation?Just as bodies and minds grow, Catholics believe that the soul also needs to grow in the life of grace. The Sacrament of Confirmation builds on the sacraments of Baptism, Reconciliation and Holy Communion, completing the process of initiation into the Catholic community.

GETTINGTO KNOWOUR PARISH

TEAM

St. John XXIII Catholic Church

How long have you worked at St. John XXIII?I started working as the Middle School Youth Ministry Coordinator for St. John XXIII Parish in the fall of 2017, however, I have been a parishioner since 2003 and organized the Girl Scout ministry from 2008 to 2017. What do you want the parishioners to know about your role within the Church? As a youth minister coordinator, it is important for all young parishioners to feel a sense of ownership in the parish. Growing up Catholic, in a parish called St. Albert the Great, my family was very active. The parish was my second home with an extended family. This is what I want for all young parishioners of St. John XXIII: a second home with an extended family who will pray for them in hard times, celebrate with them in good times, and welcome them free of judgment always. How does your faith reflect in your Parish work? The biggest blessing I have is my faith. Both my parents and grandparents taught me God’s love from infancy. I never knew anything else. Faith is fact for me and I think that is why I am so interested in apologetics. I have attended a few diocese youth events, and have listened to several speakers from NASA and other major scientific organizations. All have confirmed what I was taught as a child. How does your job benefit a parishioner? The program is blessed with an amazing team of volunteers. We have a wonderful group of adult volunteers who come each week and help. Their generosity of time and talent is an extraordinary example of God’s love for others. Then, we have a teen mentor program that invites 8th grade graduates back to help lead small group discussions along with the adults. I believe the program benefits ALL involved and I am extremely blessed to coordinate it.

Thank YouF O R YO U R D O N AT I O N

St. John XXIII thanks you for your generouscontribution to our Capital Campaign!

National Donate Life Month (NDLM) was instituted by Donate Life America and its partnering organizations in 2003. Celebrated in April each year, NDLM features an entire month of local, regional and national activities to help encourage Americans to register as organ, eye and tissue donors and to celebrate those that have saved lives through the gift of donation.Donate Life America was inspired by the concept of the pinwheel for the 2017 National Donate Life Month artwork. A pinwheel evokes various images and meanings, but the strongest association revolves around opportunity and energy. The pinwheel is symbolic of an instrument that turns obstacles into opportunities. The pinwheel’s ability to capture and pass on energy parallels one’s potential to make LIFE possible. Each Donate Life pinwheel has four sails supported by one stem, symbolizing the power one person has to be an organ, eye, tissue or living donor. For recipients, donation can turn sickness and injury into a second chance at life. For donors, their decision to register can turn a sorrowful time into a source of comfort for family as a result of renewed life for others. The pinwheel reminds us that we all have the potential to capture and pass on life, comfort and hope to others by registering as a donor. This April, we encourage you to stop to feel the breeze, watch the pinwheels and think of the lives of those touched by donation and transplantation.Thank you for your efforts in educating and registering others as organ, eye and tissue donors! Join Us!If you think you might like to give Craftie Ladies a try, we meet every Monday at the St. John XXIII Villas from 1-3pm. No skills are necessary, only the desire to help those in need. We will be happy to teach you whatever you would like to learn, from sewing, crochet, knitting or whatever. For more informatioon contact Barb at: [email protected]

The Prayer Shawl and Parish Nurse Ministries are continually giving lap robes/shawls and blankets to our homebound/ hospice parishioners. One of our Craftie Ladies, Kay, (pictured below) and many others, make lovely items for our nurses to give.We would like to share a story, just one of the many we hear from our parishioners: One of our parish nurses watched an elderly gentleman struggle to walk to his car. He was using 2 canes. She caught up with him and introduced herself to see if there was any way she could help. Even offered him food. He declined as he was flying home to be with his dying daughter. Her favorite color was blue. She was given one of our parish blankets, made by Craftie Ladies. Now his daughter will know she is surrounded by the love and prayers of St.John xxiii. Really beautiful.Have you heard of “fidget” blankets? They are often made and given to elderly Alzheimer’s/dementia patients. They are approximately placement size and sit on their laps. They are covered in various items when they feel them, helps stimulate their brains. These items can be anything, such as: zippers, ribbon strips, elastic, mesh from onion bags.Anything that will give them something to do with their hands. They love these blankets. Each one is as unique as the person who made it. The one pictured here had lots of stuff to touch and feel!Last fall there was a Mass dedicated to dementia patients, and Craftie Ladies donated several blankets. We had fun doing them, and plan on making more this year. The Craftie Ladies touches the lives of so many people! If you would like to contact our parish nurses, you can do so by calling the parish office Monday-Friday from 8am-4pm.

"We need to see each child as a gift to be welcomed, cherished and protected."

The Diocese of Venice continues to promote Share the Journey, a worldwide two-year initiative of Our Holy Father, Pope Francis. In the next seven issues of the Mustard Seed, the Diocese will run a series designed to answer questions focusing more specifically on Refugee Resettlement. This will serve as an aide to build bridges of reconciliation, understanding and hospitality in keeping with the spirit of Share the Journey. The topics covered include “What Does the Gospel Say About Refugees?”, “What is the Economic Impact?” and “Are Refugees a Burden”. For more information on Share the Journey, visit www.sharejourney.orgAs an example of the text that will appear in the Mustard Seed is included below:WHAT DOES THE GOSPEL SAY ABOUT REFUGEES?1. The Catholic Church in the United States has been helping immigrants and refugees since the founding of this nation. Indeed, it is what the Gospel calls us to do: in Matthew (25:35) Jesus tells his disciples, “I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me.” Source: Matthew, Chapter 252. Refugees are fleeing persecution and violence and have suffered great loss, including loss of their homes, livelihoods, possessions and families. Only 1% of these refugees get resettled. Migration Refugee Services (MRS) assists with food, clothing, shelter, employment, English as a second language, and orientation to a new community and culture. Source: Migration Refugee Services3. MRS works to create “a world where immigrants, refugees, migrants, and people on the move are treated with dignity, respect, welcome and belonging.”

“by Susan Vogt, www.SusanVogt.net”

1 John 3:1-2 God's ChildrenThe idea that Israel consisted of "God's Children" was not something that would be out of the ordinary for the normal Jew in the First Century. However, for the author of 1 John, the true "People of God" were those who, through baptism, had affirmed their belief in Jesus Christ as the mediator between God and Humankind. Thus, baptism is the means by which we become God's Children, not circumcision or following the cultic prescriptions of Torah. The world, of course, rejected Jesus; we recall the Prologue to the Gospel of John, "He came to what was his own, and his own people did not accept him. But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God, who were born, not of blood or of the will of the flesh or of the will of man, but of God." (John 1:11-14). Baptism, and the affirmation of belief in Jesus, is what produces true Children of God. And, finally, since "Like knows Like" in the ancient world, by being conformed to the will of God, we will understand the revelation that Jesus provided for us. And by such understanding and act of belief, we become unified with Him in the ultimate Love that He announced to the world.
