Amos describes in detail the exploitation of the poor and needy. The psalm repeats that God acts to benefit the poor and lowly. But Luke turns things upside down, telling a tale of a conflicted steward, about to be fired, who demonstrates his cleverness and is rewarded. Like the community to whom Paul writes in Timothy, these readings are personal, directed to believers, members of the Jewish and Christian communities, who struggle to deal with personal choices about how to conduct their lives. They offer an outline for how God wishes us to live in a world as complicated and as confusing as our own. WHO IS FIRST? Amos preached during a time of prosperity, national strength, and power. He condemned all who made themselves powerful or rich at the expense of others, and made it clear that God is on the side of the poor. The psalm emphasizes this as well. In Timothy, Paul writes to a struggling community. He urges them to come together without anger or argument, knowing that Christ died for all of us. Luke's tale of the steward is also directed toward believers, but seems to go the opposite direction from the other readings. The steward is fired, probably for not getting as great a return on investments as his employer wanted. Knowing this, he gives himself some insurance by reducing what is owed to his employer. He may not be cheating his employer, as one might assume, but instead reducing his own commission so that debtors owe less and think better of him. His employer is impressed by his ingenuity and commends him. WHO IS BEST? The clarity in Amos and the psalm, God's insistence on fair dealing and honesty especially regarding the poor, seems at odds with a clever steward working only for himself. These conflicting themes are reconciled if we recognize that we are stewards of all God's creation with the expectation that we will achieve the greatest return on investment possible. The "return on investment" is measured, not by "dishonest wealth" but by how it benefits the poor and lowly. We live and work in a world in which wealth, not work, is more often rewarded. These readings together remind us that the standards of success in this world are not the standards by which God measures us. God's standards are not the accumulation of wealth, power, or prestige, but rather standing with the poor, the needy, the outcast, the foreigner, the sick, the hungry, the homeless, the unemployed, and the prisoner. Stand with God. Today's Readings: Am 8:4-7; Ps 113:1-2, 4-8; 1 Tm 2:1-8; Luke 16:1-13 [10-13]

September 18, 2016 — Twenty-fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Two of today's readings make it quite clear that God is on the side of the poor.

September 18, 2016 Dear Family: As I prepared to break open this weekend's scriptures, I kept hearing a phrase my Aunt Carol Anne would regularly say. She fought cancer bravely for about 10 years. Even in her writings to me (she lived in Los Angeles) she would always close with the phrase "it's all gift". She had taken to heart a strong spiritual gratitude that deepened even in the most painful of her days. There was a kind of integrity there consistent with her whole life, but especially brought forward to mind and heart through her battle with cancer. At its heart, today's Gospel commands each one of us to strive to be persons of Gospel integrity. People of Gospel integrity are honest, trustworthy, and act out of their core beliefs. In the spirit of St. Francis of Assisi, people of Gospel integrity preach the Gospel at all times through their daily choices and behaviors. People of Gospel integrity understand that they are stewards (caretakers) of material possessions, not simply owners. They readily share what they have with those they know to be in need. In hearing this weekend's Gospel we might want to take an inventory of our charitable contributions thus far this year. Does our giving reflect generous stewardship? A person of Gospel integrity seeks to support merchants who reflect Gospel values. Do we know where the food we buy comes from and if the workers were paid a fair wage? Take inventory of how we shop and our awareness of the fair trade principles used to produce the products we frequently buy. People of Gospel integrity understand the value of our time. Take inventory of how we spend our time over the course of a week. Do we spend the most amount of time with the people we hold most dear in our lives? What adjustments can we make? Just about a year ago we had a Town Hall meeting on the issue of our Church finances. From that meeting, we have moved forward to address our concerns regarding the need for increased offertory giving. In a true spirit of generosity you have responded, and I am truly grateful for the value you place on your faith and our communion. In our effort to keep you all informed, we have placed our projected annual budget for the fiscal year in this bulletin. This has the approval of our Finance Committee. Thank you for your love of your church and your financial support that is a blessing for us all. As Aunt Carol Anne would say "it's all gift." Peace, Fr. Greg

40 Days for Life

Save the Date for St. John's "40 Days for Life" adopted day, October 5 from 7:00 am to 1:00 pm. This is a prayerful vigil that takes place in front of the Delta Clinic abortion facility located on 756 Colonial Drive in Baton Rouge. We ask that members of our Church sign up for at least one hour that morning to pray for the end of abortion by changing the hearts and minds of those who may be thinking of having an abortion, for those who work in the abortion clinics, and for those who judge and pass laws that kill our unborn children. If you have signed to participate in this in the past, you will be notified around mid September to see if you would like to participate this year. Anyone who has never signed up and would like to participate, please call the church office at 225.687.2402. “It is a poverty to decide that a child must die so that you may live as you wish." -Saint Teresa of Calcutta
