We struggle for position in the hierarchy of power: Who has power over whom? How do they wield it? What is the source of that power? What is the healthy response? In this Sunday’s Gospel reading the Pharisees en- gage Jesus in a power struggle over whether Jews should show tribute to Caesar by paying taxes. Jesus’ response puts this and every struggle for power into perspective. In harmony with the words of Isaiah and Paul, Jesus teaches us that God is the ultimate source of all power—the power of earthly rulers, the Phari- sees, Jesus, the Church, and the power within our- selves. “Repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, and to God what belongs to God.”

— Matthew 22:21

What is very special in Fatima is the procession of Can-dles that happens every night at 9:30 pm. It may sound too late, but local people and pilgrims wrestling with jet lag have made it to this beautiful and touching ceremony for so many years. One night I remember, there were like 300 priests and so many faithful people (almost 4,000) They start with the Rosary of the day with Bible scripture for each mystery. They start each decade with one lan-guage or sometimes 5 hail Marys’ in a different lan-guage. The second part of the Hail Mary can be said in your own language. Then they light the candles each per-son has with the light from the Altar. Preventing the wax from falling on someone’s hands, they have a plastic cup at the top of the candle; this protects as well as the flame from the blowing wind. When the Ave Maria is sung, they all raise their candles up in the air. The procession ensues, guided by a bright cross, followed by priests each with a lighted candle, then people carrying the statue of Blessed Virgin Mary with many flowers around it, and bishops behind the Blessed Virgin Mary. The faithful are all around from the cross to the back. Watching those candles going up and down at the same time is very beautiful and fascinating. The procession starts from the place of the apparition going to the front of the new Ba-silica of the Holy Trinity below a huge brightened Ro-sary, and goes back to the starting place. Then following the final blessing of the bishop, the people go back home. There is another lighted cross in the night, located on the Old Basilica. Below, one can see a beautiful statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This statue was donated by a priest in the USA. She has a heart surrounded by thorns. It may look like Mary is greeting all people below. It was on December 10, 1925, while Lucia was in her room at the convent, Our Lady with the Child Jesus on her side appeared to her. Our Lady was resting with one hand up-on Lucia’s shoulder, holding in Her other hand a bleed-ing heart surrounded with sharp thorns. The child Jesus spoke first to Lucia: "Have pity on the Heart of your Most Holy Mother. It is covered with the thorns with which un-grateful men pierce It at every moment, and there is no one to remove them with an act of reparation.” Then Our La-dy said to Lucia: “My daughter, look at My Heart encir-cled with the thorns with which ungrateful men pierce It at every moment by their blasphemies and ingratitude. Do you at least try to console Me and announce in My name that I promise to assist at the hour of death with the graces neces-sary for salvation all those who, on the first Saturday of five consecutive months, go to Confession and receive Holy Communion, recite the Rosary and keep Me company for a quarter of an hour while meditating on the mysteries of the Rosary with the intention of making reparation to Me” (To Be Continued)

Pope Francis’ October intention: “That all workers may receive respect & protection of their rights and that the unemployed may receive the opportunity to contribute to the common good.” Reflection on today’s second reading (1Thessolians 1:1-5): To-day’s second reading contains some important insights into the 1st. century - early church: (1) Paul mentions Silvanus and Timothy which indicates that he is not working in isolation. (2) By references to God the Father, Jesus-Christ and the Holy-Spirit the doctrine of the Trinity is very much present. (3) Faith, Hope and Love, the three theological virtues, are clearly expressed. ( At the closing Mass of the 100th. anniversary of Fatima – Bishop Cotta taught everyone the following prayer, which the visionary children were taught during the apparitions: “My God, I believe in you, I adore you. I hope in you and I love you. I ask pardon for all who do not believe in & adore you, who do not hope in and love you, Amen.”) For information & registration regarding the following – you are welcome to contact us through the above phone # & email: RE/CCD/CFF: Sunday morning classes, beginning at 8:55 a.m. (which include sacramental preparation, altar-server training and more) for children, grades K through Junior-High & older if she/he needs to prepare for sacraments) who attend public schools. Thank you parishioners for helping to fill the SVDP thr ift store truck a couple of weeks ago and thank you volunteers who were there after all the Masses to accept donations. Your time and commitment to SVDP activities is very much appre-ciated. And no surprises for this week’s donation requests for the food locker. We are in need and most likely will always be in need of white rice, cereal, jelly, mac n cheese and brown paper bags. These items are not typically donated by our com-mercial vendors and is the reason we are always asking our parishioners for these items. We are helping between 40 and 50 families every Wednesday with groceries which requires between 80-100 brown paper bags per week. Thank you all SVDP volunteers who work all during the week who gather donations from our store benefactors in addition to your time spent at the food locker on Wednesdays. Thank you all who support SVDP with your monetary Mass offerings. We are blessed and grateful.
