Twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time: Undoubtedly we have spent much of the past week doing things others have asked us to do: work for our bosses, errands for our spouses, homework for our teachers, care for our children or parents. Hopefully we have spent part of the past week also doing the things God asks of us, though they may overlap quite a bit with the rest. Here and now, however, we dedicate this time to God. Let us reflect on all the gifts God has given us and left our hearts and voices in thanksgiving and praise.

Vigésimo Noveno Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario: Indudablemente hemos pasado una buena parte de la semana pasada haciendo cosas que otras personas nos han pedido: trabajo para nuestros jefes o patrones, mandaditos para nuestro cónyuge, tareas para nuestros maestros, cuidar de nues-tros hijos o padres. Ojala que también hayamos pasado parte de la semana pasada haciendo las cosas que Dios nos ha pedido. Aunque probablemente hayan coincidido bastante con el resto de lo que hicimos. Aquí y ahora, sin embargo, dedicamos este tiempo a Dios. Consideremos todos los dones que Dios nos ha dado y levantemos nuestro corazón y nuestras voces en alabanzas y acción de gracia.

In today’s Gospel Jesus says: “Repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what be-longs to God.” When God is the center of our lives there is no problem with giving others their due. Through your gift to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul you are helping your neigh-bor who is hungry, hopeless and frightened to know that they belong to God.

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul would like to thank the parishioners of St. John for the gen-erous contribution of $3,780 for the month of September. During the month we visited 29 households and assisted with electric and water bills, along with food, personal care items and housing costs. The total expendi-tures were $7,895.95. Thank you again, and many blessings for all you do.

En el Evangelio de hoy Jesús dice: “Paga al César lo que es del César y a Dios lo que es de Dios.” Cuando Dios es el centro de nuestras vidas, no hay problema en dar a los demás lo que les corresponde. A través de su donación a la Sociedad de San Vicente de Paul, esta ayudando a su vecino que tiene hambre, des-esperanza y miedo a saber que pertenece a Dios.

Respect Life. Twenty-five years ago, St. John Paul II wrote that the Gospel of life is at the heart of Jesus’ saving message to the world (Evangelium vitae 1).

In taking on human flesh, dwelling among us, and sacrificing his very life for our redemption, Christ reveals the profound dignity of every human person. As the Church celebrates the 25th anniversary of St. John Paul II’s prophetic encyclical, let us reflect on how we personally live out the Gospel. “Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brethren, you did it to me” (MT. 25:40).

USCCB Election Novena. The USCCB is offering an Election Novena to help Catholics prepare for the upcoming election. For nine consecutive days, Monday, October 26 through Tuesday, November 3, participants will be encouraged to pray one Our Father, Hail Mary, and Glory Be for the day’s intention. A closing prayer for elected leaders will be offered on day 10, Wednesday, November 4. Rosary Follow-up. The Mysteries that are spot-lighted in the bulletin this week are the Sor-rowful Mysteries. When we meditate on these mysteries here at St. John, we are blessed to simply raise our eyes over the altar to view the fifth mystery, The Crucifixion. The fruit of the mystery is perseverance. Another mystery that tends to center people in times of difficulty is the third mystery, the Crowning of Thorns. The fruit of this mystery is courage. When you put yourself in this mystery you see Jesus humiliat-ed. A false crown is placed on his head. You can hear the taunts of the soldiers but Jesus remains strong. He knows the Father is with him. When we transfer our meditation to our own lives, we understand that courage is knowing that the same Father is in the midst of our crisis also. He is present. Please make the rosary your own. There are many ways to say it. You can break it into decades. In the car, in the grocery line, at the dentist office, at a red light, you can simply pray one decade and fall right into the “Rhythm of Life” St. John Paul II did throughout his life. Cuando te sumerges en este misterio ves a Jesús humillado. Le colo-can una corona falsa en su cabeza. Puedes escuchar las burlas de los soldados pero Je-

sús se mantiene fuerte. Sabe que su Padre esta con el. Cuando aplicamos esta medita-ción a nuestra propia vida, entendemos que el coraje es saber que el mismo Padre también esta en medio de nuestra crisis. El esta pre-sente. Por favor, haga suyo el rosario. Hay muchas formas de rezarlo, puedes hacerlo por décadas o misterios.
