FOURTH SUNDAY OF LENT: THERE IS NO GREATER BLINDNESS THAN THE BLINDNESS OF THOSE WHO DO NOT WANT TO SEE

In today´s gospel from John, we have this blind man from birth leading to a greater meditation on the power of God. First of all, there is a lot to absorb these days of constant change with the coronavirus, we hear the regulations and that bring s fear to many of us. I see a lot of meme´s out there, trying to lighten up the anxiousness that we are feeling, I hope that none are denying the severity of this pandemic. What I don´t like it when people use these situations to bring more fear into our lives, unnecessary drama that may lead to people being more insecure and paralyzed to do what we must to combat this virus. I also see that people that use this virus to tell us that we have brought about this situation, because of our sinful ways. They utilize this God of punishment and retaliation, far from what the God that I pray to, and in which I place my trust in, our God of love and mercy. In today´s gospel, they ask Jesus if this man is blind, because of His sins or his ancestors. Jesus responds no, neither are responsible for His blindness. Instead, he says that He will be a vehicle through which others may see. This man does not know who Jesus is, but he is open to be cured, open for something to be done. He has already experienced the kindness of the man who has taken the time to be with Him. My second thought is about how we tend to others, just like the blind man, we say that his sickness or state is because He has sinned. When we come upon a person who is in need, who we may see on the Street corner or before a store begging, why are we always thinking about the bad this person has done to get to this state? We may see that they are drunk or they are drugged out, they might be smelly, dirty and many times very loud; but do we know their story, what they have gone through? Has anyone ever showed them that they are worthy of God´s grace? Has anyone detained themselves to recognize them as human beings? Sometimes in listening to them, we may open up a world of possibilities that they have denied and never thought about. Jesus places the clay with his saliva on the blind man´s eyes and sends him to wash in the Pool of Siloam and was able to see. The man testifies that this Jesus is a man from God, for he has cured Him. Even the Pharisees denied that Jesus was a good man because he does these miracles on the Sabbath. My third reflection is that for those who are truly blind, corporally and sinful ways, they can never truly see the Lord in their midst nor the Good work of God that is accomplished when someone is open to Him. The blind man is sent away and again he runs into Jesus. Jesus speaks to Him and asks Him this simple and deep question, “Do you believe in the Son of Man?” and he says, “who is He so that I may believe in Him”. Once he discovers that it is Jesus before Him, his heart opens up and says “I believe, Lord.” Jesus goes to all who need, all, not all respond the same way, but I feel that something always changes in us when we encounter Christ, you can´t be indifferent. Some of us turn to Him more, after experiencing His mercy and love. Our hearts leap with joy. Others are blinded more because they are set in their ways and cannot recognize the face of the One who desires to save them. I pray that we may always have the desire to see, humbly recognizing our sinfulness, our need for mercy, and trying each day to let others know of how Jesus will always receive them in His presence. NO HAY MAYOR CEGUERA, QUE LA CEGUERA DE AQUELLOS QUE NO QUIEREN VER En el evangelio de hoy de Juan, tenemos a este hombre ciego desde el nacimiento que nos lleva a una mayor meditación sobre el poder de Dios. En primer lugar, hay mucho que absorber en estos días de constante cambio con el coronavirus, escuchamos las regulaciones y eso nos causa temor. Veo muchos memes por ahí, tratando de calmar la ansiedad que sentimos, espero que ninguno niegue la gravedad de esta pandemia. Lo que no me gusta es cuando las personas usan estas situaciones para traer más miedo a nuestras vidas, drama innecesario que puede llevar a que las personas se sientan inseguras y paralizadas para hacer lo que debemos para combatir este virus. También veo que las personas que usan este virus para decirnos que hemos provocado esto, debido a nuestra forma pecaminosa, utilizan a este Dios de castigo y represalia, lejos de ser el Dios al que le pido y en quien confío, nuestro Dios de amor y misericordia. En el evangelio de hoy, le preguntan a Jesús si este hombre es ciego, debido a sus pecados o de sus antepasados. Jesús responde que no, ninguno son responsables de su ceguera. En cambio, dice que será un vehículo a través del cual otros podrán ver. Este hombre no sabe quién es Jesús, pero está abierto a ser curado, abierto a hacer algo. Él ya ha experimentado la bondad del hombre que se ha tomado el tiempo para estar con Él. Mi segundo pensamiento es acerca de cómo atendemos a los demás, al igual que el hombre ciego, decimos que su enfermedad o estado se debe a que ha pecado. Cuando nos encontramos con una persona necesitada, que se puede ver en la esquina de la calle o delante de que una tienda mendigando, ¿por qué es que siempre estamos pensando en lo malo que esta persona ha hecho para llegar a este estado? Podemos ver que están borrachos o drogados, pueden estar malolientes, sucios y muchas veces son muy ruidosos; ¿Pero conocemos su historia, por lo que han pasado? ¿Alguien les ha demostrado que son dignos de la gracia de Dios? ¿Alguien se ha detenido para reconocerlos como seres humanos? A veces, al escucharlos, podemos abrir un mundo de posibilidades que se le han sido negado y en las que quizás nunca pensaron. Jesús coloca la arcilla con su saliva en los ojos del ciego y lo envía a lavarse al estanque de Siloam y pudo ver. El hombre testifica que este Jesús es un hombre de Dios, porque lo ha curado; incluso cuando los fariseos negaron que Jesús fuera un buen hombre, porque hace estos milagros en sábado. Mi tercer reflexión es que para aquellos que son verdaderamente ciegos, corporalmente y pecaminosos, nunca pueden verdaderamente ver al Señor en medio de ellos ni la Buena obra de Dios que se logra cuando alguien está abierto a Él. El ciego es enviado fuera y nuevamente se encuentra con Jesús. Jesús le habla y le hace esta simple y profunda pregunta: "¿Crees en el Hijo del Hombre" y él dice: ¿quién es Él para que yo pueda creer en Él? Una vez que descubre que es Jesús el que esta delante él, su corazón se abre y dice: "Creo, Señor". Jesús acude a todos los que necesitan, todos, pero no todos responden de la misma manera, pero siento que algo siempre cambia en nosotros cuando nos encontramos con Cristo, no puedes ser indiferente. Algunos nos volvemos más hacia Él, después de experimentar Su misericordia y amor. Nuestros corazones saltan de alegría. Otros están más cegados porque están fijos en sus caminos y no pueden reconocer la cara del Aquél que desea salvarlos. Oro para que siempre tengamos el deseo de ver, reconociendo humildemente nuestra pecaminosidad, la necesidad de Su misericordia, y tratando cada día de comunicar a todos que Jesús siempre los recibirá en su presencia. Pope: Make mercy the air you breathe The fifth beatitude, began Pope Francis, is different than the others: it is the only one “in which the cause and effect of happiness coincide”. “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy”, he read. Those who exercise mercy, explained the Pope, “will be shown mercy”. The theme of reciprocity we see here is not only a characteristic of this beatitude, continued the Pope. It is repeated throughout the entire Gospel. “How could it be otherwise? Mercy is the very heart of God!” he said. The Pope then went on to mention a few examples of this reciprocity. In Luke’s Gospel, for example, Jesus teaches us that if we do not judge, we shall not be judged. This theme is also very clear in the Lord’s Prayer, continued the Pope, when we say “Forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us”. Then, picking up on the Gospel of Matthew, the Pope explained: “For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins”. The forgiveness that we give and we receive are two things which cannot be separated, said Pope Francis. But there are many people who find themselves unable to forgive. Often the evil we have received is so great that forgiveness appears as arduous as climbing a mountain, he said. Alone, he continued, we cannot mirror God’s mercy. “We need the grace of God”, he said, and we must ask for it. “If the Fifth Beatitude promises that we will find mercy, and in the Lord's Prayer we ask for our trespasses to be forgiven, it means that we are in debt, and in need of mercy!” said the Pope. In fact, continued Pope Francis, we are all in debt to God, Pope Francis said, and it is this weakness that becomes the strength we need to forgive. “Where does our mercy come from?” asked the Pope. Mercy is not one of many realities, “There is no Christianity without mercy. If all our Christianity does not lead us to mercy, we are on the wrong path, because mercy is the only true goal of every spiritual journey. It is one of the most beautiful fruits of charity.” Finally, Pope Francis reminded the faithful following his catechesis that “God's mercy is our liberation and our happiness”, emphasising, “it is the air that we must breathe”.

Vincentian Meditation for the week: “Before a Vincentian can be a sign of God’s love, a sign of God’s generosity, a sign of God’s service, he or she must

have personal experience of God’s love, God’s generosity, God’s service. The most unfortunate people in society are

those who have not had the experience of being loved. Before loving other, we must come to the realization that

we are at every moment of our lives being loved by God. If we do not reflect often in prayer on the fact that the love of God is flowing down upon us at each moment of the day, it

will be difficult for us to show love to others, to show love to the poor. May you have a love for the poor and be generous

to the poor and be of service to the poor but, more importantly, may you have each day a fresh experience of God’s love, of God’s generosity and of God’s service.”

DIOCESE OF BROOKLYN CORONAVIRUS UPDATE 3-18-20 As a follow-up to the directive to suspend all Public Masses until further notice, the Most Reverend Nicholas DiMarzio, Bishop of Brooklyn, has issued a number of additional guidelines, governing the practice of the faith as a result of the Coronavirus outbreak, to all parishes throughout Brooklyn and Queens. To comply with the government recommendation to avoid gatherings of 10 or more people, the following has been implemented in the Diocese of Brooklyn effective immediately: PALM SUNDAY AND HOLY WEEK SERVICES

• There will be no Masses open to the public on Palm Sunday. Priests throughout Brooklyn and Queens will bless palms and will be asked to leave them on tables in the back of the Church for pickup. • Reconciliation Monday, a special time devoted to confession at the start of Holy Week, has been cance-led. However, Priests will be available for individual confessions throughout the remainder of the Lenten season and during this period of crisis. • The Chrism Mass will not be celebrated publicly. The Bishop will celebrate the Mass from the Cathedral and the oils will be available for distribution at designated sites around the diocese. Further information will be released at a later date. • The Mass of the Lord’s Supper (Holy Thursday), the Liturgy of the Lord’s Passion (Good Friday) the Easter Vigil and Easter Sunday, will not be celebrated publicly. A broadcast schedule of the services with no congregation, to air on NET-TV, the cable channel of the Diocese of Brooklyn, will be announced at a later date. CONFIRMATIONS/FIRST COMMUNIONS

• All Confirmations and Communions have been postponed until May 15, 2020. • MASS INTENTIONS

• All intentions will be satisfied in private Masses. • ANOINTING OF THE SICK

• The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick may be administered to individuals as needed, with Priests visiting those with COVID-19 taking extra precautions. • COMMUNION

• Priests will try to make Communion calls, adhering to necessary health precautions. • PARISH SERVICES

• Parish food pantries may remain open, but those in need are asked to contact their specific parish for schedule and procedural updates. • Alcoholics Anonymous groups will continue to meet but only with less than 10 people and adhering to the social distancing practice. • Churches may remain open for silent adoration but in adherence to capacity guidelines. • All parish meetings and parish events will be canceled.

• Bulletins will be posted on parish websites. ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICES

• The Diocese of Brooklyn’s administrative offices will be closed to the public due to the Coronavirus beginning Wednesday, March 18, 2020, for an undisclosed amount of time. The diocesan staff will be working remotely. Sacrament of Marriage For a marriage ceremony at St. John the Baptist or Our Lady of Good Counsel, arrangements must be made with the Pastor at least 1 year before the wedding date. The diocesan Marriage Preparation or “Pre-Cana” classes are presented in English, Spanish, Creole, Polish and Italian. The Diocese of Brooklyn have specialized Pre-Cana for Interfaith/Interchurch couples, for couples who are re-marrying and for couples who are convalidating their civil unions. HOLY SACRAMENTS

Infant Baptism Birth to 6 yrs. Infant baptisms are celebrated on the first Sunday of every month. Baptism preparation class for parents and Godparents are held on the Tuesday prior to the Baptism Sunday. Parent(s) or Godparent(s), please bring an original birth certificate of the child to the main office where you can begin the process of registration for this beautiful sacrament.

Children’s Faith Formation ages 7 yrs. to 15 yrs. (Baptism, First Holy Communion, Confirmation) Our Children’s Faith Formation program provides preparation of the Holy Sacraments for children. The program follows Diocesan Guidelines for the Rite of Christian Initiation of Children. The hours for children's faith formation classes are Sunday, 9:30 A.M. -1:00 P.M.

Pentecost Confirmation 16 yrs. and older Are you baptized and received First Holy Communion but have not completed the Sacrament of Confirmation and you are over the age of 16? Our Confirmation only program begins in January in preparation for Pentecost Confirmation typically at the end of May or beginning of June.

Anointing of the sick Call (718) 455-6864 to make arrangements for the sick person to receive Holy Communion or the Anointing of the Sick at home.

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (R.C.I.A.) (Becoming a Catholic)

Are you baptized? Have you received First Holy Communion? Are you Confirmed? Adults and youth at least 16 yrs. of age seeking full initiation into the Catholic Church are invited to enter into a process of faith formation. RCIA classes are all year round.

LOS SACRAMENTOS Bautismo para bebes nacimiento a 6 años

Los bautismos para bebes se celebran el primer domingo de cada mes. La clase de preparación del bautismo para los padres y padrinos es el martes antes del domingo del bautismo. Archbishop Gomez invites Catholics to “seek together the maternal intercession of Our Lady of Guadalupe” and shared the following prayer:

Holy Virgin of Guadalupe, Queen of the Angels and Mother of the Americas.

We fly to you today as your beloved children. We ask you to intercede for us with your Son,

as you did at the wedding in Cana.

Pray for us, loving Mother, and gain for our nation and world,

and for all our families and loved ones, the protection of your holy angels,

that we may be spared the worst of this illness. For those already afflicted,

we ask you to obtain the grace of healing and deliverance. Hear the cries of those who are vulnerable and fearful,

wipe away their tears and help them to trust.

In this time of trial and testing, teach all of us in the Church to love one another and to be patient and kind.

Help us to bring the peace of Jesus to our land and to our hearts.

O Hope of Israel, its savior in time of trouble, look down with kindness from Heaven.

Take a close look at your vineyard, and provide whatever is necessary for it.

Swell its streams, increase its fruit, and bring to maturity

the vineyard which your right hand has planted. Indeed, the harvest is great

but the laborers are few. We ask you, therefore, Lord of the Harvest:

send laborers into your harvest. Multiply your people and increase their joy

so that the walls of Jerusalem may be built up. This is your house, O Lord God,

this is your house. Let there not be in it, I beg you,

even one stone which your most holy hand has not placed there.
