DID YOU KNOW

Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, a form of devotion to Jesus Christ as the Word of God incarnate, consisting of veneration of his physical heart, united to his divinity, as the symbol of his redemptive love. Anchored in Jesus’ assertion that living water would flow from his heart (John 7:37-39) and patristic tradition that the Holy Spirit flowed out upon the Church from Jesus’ pierced side (John 19:33-37), this devotion draws upon the popular sense of the heart as the seat of a person’s inner life, both natural and supernatural, Christ’s threefold love—human, infused, and divine-is epitomized by the pierced heart of Jesus hanging on the cross. The Middle Ages saw a transition from the wound in Jesus’ side as a source of grace to the Heart of Jesus as the express object of a particular, more personal devotion. Coupled with a subjective piety that emphasized Christ’s Passion, the devotion was taken up by the Derotio Moderna and was bequeathed to the Society of Jesus and the Sisters of the Visitation by their founders, Ignatius of Loyola (1491-1556) and Francis de Sales (1567-1622) John Eudes (1601-80) composed a Mass and Office of the Sacred Heart, and the private revelations of Margaret Mary Alacoque (1647-90) at Paray-le-Monial, France (1673-75), promoted the devotion and shaped its practice, especially acts of reparation and consecration. The bishops of Poland were allowed to celebrate a feast of the Sacred Heart, which was extended to the universal Church in 1856. It is celebrated on the Friday after Corpus Christi.
