For her final exam piece she chose to explore mental disor-der such as manic depression and bi-polar disorder. Her use of thermo sensitive paint means that the sculpture is interactive and changes colour on contact with heat. So if your hands are warm enough you can touch and see the effect.

Rosanna Concadoro

Andreas has an intellectual approach to his artwork and there is invariably an intriguing depth of thought behind his ideas. For his exam piece he explored the theme of ‘Order & Disorder’ in boxing. Whereas fighting is mostly associated with disorder the disciplines within the confines of the rules give an aspect of order.

Gina uses the shattered image of herself as a vehicle to cleverly depict mental disorder. Like fragments of broken glass they create a visual chaos that reflects the disorder that can lie within.

Joseph’s talent lies in his incredible ability to create 3D sculptures from just card and foam core board. His highly developed spatial awareness enables him to visualise and implement the steps in building often very complex solid forms and details. He interpreted the exam theme through the disorder caused to human life by weaponry.

Keshavi’s vibrant and skilful paintings are developed from her equally brilliant talent for photography and keen eye for composition. Her ideas are always exciting and highly developed. Her interpretation on the exam theme explored mental disorders such as multiple-personality whilst also considering the order of symmetry in the face.

Dawn’s unusual and apparently scrumptious sculpture addresses the Relationship of someone suffering from an eating disorder has with food. She cleverly portrays the idea that whilst struggling to eat just one pea the mind is weighed down by an abundance of high fat and sugar treats that are denied because of the disorder.

Joe’s focus for the exam topic was order and disorder on the streets. Using his own photographs of New York he developed an image that combined the order of the shop facades and neatly lined up yellow cabs with the disorder of a rioter preparing to throw a petrol bomb. Joe’s confident and loose painting style, contrasting use of colours and clever distinction created by the two layered image makes a dynamic and powerful picture.

Jack’s surreal chess board enabled him to fully demonstrate, not only his wonderful im-agination, but also his ability to model clay skilfully and with great attention to detail. Inspired by the work of Escher his focus for the exam topic was the disorder of phobias.

Rosanna work addresses visual order and disorder within the armed forces. Her final piece demonstrates her brilliant painting skills with this piece that combines the disordered pattern of camouflage revealing a soldier keeping order behind.

Exam title: Order &/or Disorder GCSE

(illustrations are of students final exam pieces)

Taylor’s exam piece draws parallels between the disorder of conflict and the order of sporting activities where sporting props are substitut-ed for weapons and the lanes of the running track are separated by barbed wire.

Christine created a scene that used both symbolism and narrative in addressing various mental disorders and trauma. The isolation often caused by mental disorders is represented by the images trapped in the bubbles and accentuated by the confinement of the box and the foreboding and intimidating im-age of the on-looking woman.

2014

St. John’s Senior School

1st Years The 1st yrs began by studying, line tone and texture through observational drawing and various other media. They

have developed an understanding of basic colour theory and produced Artwork in the Pop-art style. In particular

they have been influenced by the work of Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein. Most recently they have been

investigating totem pole design and using clay in creating sections of their own totem poles.

2nd Years The second years have been investigating organic forms and art and architecture that has drawn inspiration from

them. Drawing inspiration from the work of Antonio Gaudi and William Morris they have created poly prints, lino–

cuts, card relief tiles and clay work. The final project this year has been a Graphic design project which has enabled

they to develop skills of a different creative time and introduced them to a design technology approach to creating.

3rdYears The 3rd years began the with the challenge of creating self-portraits. They went on to research and analyse the work

of Pablo Picasso and in particular the Cubist movement. Inspired by this they created multi-media cubist style

sculptures. The final project, being the mask project, introduced them to the different styles and uses of venetian and

African tribal masks before giving them the opportunity to develop their own individual and imaginative masks.

A2 exam title: Growth and Evolution

Jasmine Prasad

Graffiti table top by Jasmine Prasad. Jasmine’s

intriguing and compelling final piece leads us into

an actual graffiti painted room. The evocative

graphics covering the walls and furniture depict her

articulate thoughts on society.

Jasmine’s philosophical intellect and impressive

artistic skills fuse perfectly.

Oliver Whayman

Oliver’s humorous approach to the title portrays the

leafy tomato stalks transforming and evolving into

similar shaped but dramatically different organic

forms. A witty and fruitful outcome.

As exam title: Earth, air, fire, water

Isabel Chan

Isabel’s extremely creative and innovative final piece

clearly displays her adept artistic talent. The mixed

media sculptures illustrate two short stories which

skilfully incorporate the words of the exam title.

Christabel Kunuyi

Christabel’s dynamic and expressive self-portrait

exhibits African tribal face painting, displaying

decorative meaningful marks and symbols exclusive

to the Yoruba tribe.
